Can we just take a sec to appreciate the symbolism happening here?

All of it is grim, of course: the stark black and white and blood red, the jagged stray threads. The black outlines in the red church windows framing her like a cage, and then the outlines of men closing in around her: two different kinds of trapped. The mirrored poses, implying that Annabel, in some key way, is still the same now as she was then: sad and helpless and on her own, expected to be demure and polite through it all.

But the bit that scratches my brain most satisfyingly is the usage of 'photo negative' inverted colours to turn mourning black into wedding white, thereby implying that they are, on some level, the same thing viewed through a different filter. Because, as Annabel herself has directly said, to her the prospect of this marriage is its own kind of death.

Like I'm not gonna argue with people on tumblr dot com that they shouldn't disrespect characters' canon sexualities with their ships I'm actually getting too old for dat atp but I'm just gonna say y'all cannot ship a canonically lesbian character with a man that uttered misogynistic rapey fantasies about "taming her" like a "wild mustang" the moment he met her and then expect people to not call you what you are which is lame as hell. To be fucking honest. Like ohhh you're regurgitating the regressive conservative straight male fantasy of correctively raping lesbians and forcing "devious" women into submission through sexual violence omg should we tell everyone? And the thing that gets me is the expectation to be coddled for it like um no I don't think it's my job to tell you that it's totally fine to include sexual humiliation of a lesbian character at the hand of a violent man that antagonizes her in your "doll playing" because she's fictional and that definitely doesn't have any implications at allll about your respect for and perception of lesbian women in real life especially in a time where shit like "d*kebreaking" kinks are thrown around in conservative and queer spaces alike and we're in a second postfeminist renaissance of patriarchal traditionalism. I mean if you're gonna do all that then at least do it with your ass cheeks attached to it and don't whine when people don't fw you because of it. Now that episode 165 is out for non-fastpassers, I can finally state my theory that the staff had to do with Lenore’s gambit failing, partially due to her kinda awful treatment of them as Leo. I don’t think her devaluing of the staff as Leo would be the direct cause of her downfall, but given the evidence we’ve seen throughout Nevermore that Lenore knows little of the actual power of house staff (ie the hidden tunnels Ada introduced to her in the manor trial, which were used by staff to get around unseen + the chair in the walls in the academy) I think they found her out and in some way aided Wesley in outing her as a means of blackmailing Annabel. I think the potential discovery of their involvement would be interesting in this arc, since both Ada and Lenore are withering and we don’t know exactly what happens in that state, so perhaps we’ll see more interaction between the two sooner rather than later.

I wasn't going to say anything about the hellfire discourse but everybody seems to be saying their piece now so what the hell. Personally I think ppl should be allowed to ship whatever. You never know what someone has been through, and a lot of ppl ship problematic things to try to process their past traumas. It's none of my business really! Like I've seen ppl say, you should block the things that you don't want to see. This is the thing I don't think enough ppl are talking about though. If someone sees your ship and is grossed out by the way you talk about it, they can still reply or vaguepost about it if they want to??? If you don't like them disagreeing with your ship then maybe you should be blocking them. It reminds me of how ppl online get all mad about free speech and how they should be allowed to say anything anytime they want to. Yeah you can say anything but that doesn't mean ppl won't hold you accountable you know? If someone is saying they hate hellfire when you like it and that makes you feel like you're being cyber bullied, you should take your own advice and block them, instead of ordering them to block you. They're allowed to talk about hating your ship just as much as your allowed to talk about loving it. I don't usually post but after reading @carliecue's essay today, I'm tired of watching the same group boss everybody else around. I want to make sure it's clear that I rly think ppl should be allowed to ship whatever they want without being harassed, but I think it's also true that someone posting to their own blog about how much they hate your favorite ship isn't them bullying you. Also if you always post criticism, you should get used to getting it too. It's good practice for real life!!!!

Very random thought but Eulalie Nevermore feels more in tune with the Morella character in the Poe short story while Morella Nevermore feels more in tune with the Eulalie character in the poem/song than both of them do with their namesakes imo. To elaborate, Poe's Morella is a very strange and intelligent woman in tune with the supernatural to some degree (as in, rebirthing herself on her deathbed somehow and before that being an avid enjoyer of morbid German literature and philosophy schools discussing the concept of death and rebirth), meanwhile Poe's Eulalie as described in the short verses we have of her is a young, bright-eyed, gentle & joyful girl and it's one of Poe's very few works that don't have horror elements.

Prospero as a Character

I've never really enjoyed Prospero but he's recently grown on me, as I realize he is kind of like me. Aro man with a lesbian bsf. Just like me fr!! Lmao

I won't get deep into it, but I love me some non-partnering aro rep. And from Prospero's character, at least through my interpretation, he really seems like he is a character that both does not desire a romantic relationship, nor is intended to have one. Everyone has a right to their interpretations, and I respect that (clarifying bc ik people aren't always.. fans of differing opinions. Especially in this fandom, I've noticed).

Whenever I see a Prospero ship, it feels funky to me-- something I really can't see and just just, idk feels weird personally-- but people are allowed to ship what they want and I will never judge a person's character upon that. People have their headcanons, and nobody should be judgmental of that. All that to say people can ship what they want, I really don't care, and neither should others. The problem arises when people make excuses for it.

The big thing that is important to this post is that Prospero seems like a non-partnering aromantic. I understand and acknowledge that aromanticism is a wide spectrum, and that is a beautiful thing that I'm proud to be a part of. There is a such thing as partnering aromantics, and as long as people are happy, that's a beautiful thing.

Shipping Culture and Excuses

I think if people were to just say "I simply enjoy the ship" that's fine! I personally have no issue with that. But I just saw, for the first time, someone make the excuse of "aro people can still date" when talking about the recent hellfire Lenore x Montresor stuff that's going on (idk much about that). The idea of "aro people can still date" has always just felt like a way of saying "aro people can still be normal," so seeing that be genuinely used for the first time just left a bad taste in my mouth. Again, I have no issue with someone enjoying any Prospero ship, it just makes it feel almost invalidating to the idea of aromanticism when people use that excuse.

Under the same post I saw "aro people can still date," a different person, when referring to hellfire, said "lesbians can still date men." I won't claim that as true or not. My bsf, tho I acknowledge she does not speak for the whole lesbian community, would probably rather explode than date a man. Just as I would rather explode than date. Period.

Wether or not "lesbians can still date men" is true or not, I find both statements absurd. People should NEVER have to make excuses for why they enjoy a ship. Live and let live. If you don't enjoy something that someone else is enjoying without harming anyone, fine, just keep it private instead of attacking.

Just as a lesbian Lenore would hypothetically not date a man in most people's mind, a non-partnering Prospero would not date if he had a choice, at least in my mind. I find it absurd to be attacking someone for a ship (ie. hellfire) while defending other ships that to some people, may be implausible (ie. prospero ships) while using excuses to defend it, in a sense. Again, there is nothing wrong with Prospero ships, they simply aren't my thing. If you enjoy them, who cares? The only issue is when there is the need for and the use of excuses. And again, anyone who makes other feel like they need to defend and throw our reasons and excuses for their ships are unreasonable.

I have often been dogpiled on and in arguments over Lennabel, a ship I personally do not enjoy. I have no issue with Lennabel shippers, but many have had issues with me and I personally have been made to defend myself in my tastes. Anyone who puts anyone else in that position is unreasonable imo. They're fictional characters. I've never enjoyed how this fandom is about their headcanons and ships.

I'll end with saying that I personally do not see hellfire (Nor any other Lenore ships, really). I personally do not see any Propsero ships. What y'all see, is okay. Again, they are all fictional. Kin who you want to kin, ship who you want to ship. Be free!! Live and let live.
