and yeah I feel like ressa had gotten there emotionally too, tbh???? like she was def as content with the idea of marrying tor as she’d ever thought she’d be w/ an arranged marriage tbh and altho it was never official, I feel like it had been a thing that she and arantha had talked about for awhile and she’s like “yeah i could def do that” and living with tor on byssya is def preferable than jareth/karth or a quasar/arvor, y’know???

anyway, now he’s not her husband but she still considers him to be a (kinda of??) friend but more importantly an ally and someone she can trust and she’s always happy to see him on arvor tbh (even if I feel like she tries to run interference between him and the quasars b/c i FEEL like there’s just a lot of tension there and it isn’t fun for anyone except maybe leck??)

So I was initially thinking Jareth but…Jareth is such a fail…(Jareth probs still funded some failed effort at something smdh honestly Tor shook his head in secondhand embarrassment from the results of the that probs) plus I don’t really see him doing anything against Aram since he still sees Aram as his ticket to imperial might ++ the whole objective was to get Kahrin and Aram together and I remember something about Aram being injured (but that might just have been bc he was like ARAM TO THE RESCUE or something and got involved in the fray bc yknow Aram has no chill).  So it could have been early grumblings of a Resistance or maybe even one of the dead Tomaks.  Oh!  Or wait ok so the reaSoN I was thinking Tor wouldn’t be involved is bc he’s not gonna waste his chance for revenge…or sacrifice his planet.  Like I mean he haTES the Quasars and it def crosses the line into the irrational part of his brain and he would absolutely die for this cause, and I can def see him doing super impulsive things as time moves forward, but rn I think he’s trying to be smart about it.

Further, he has a v small House.  Like, if he’s caught in treason, he dies and Arth gets disinherited and hurled into the Arena and thus dies House Molec and what happens to Byssya then????  Like, it’s primed atp for House Quasar to just swoop in and like idk make the baby Ressa’s expecting King of Byssya probs or if not there iS Konstantine but as far as Torul’s concerned, House Secura is the second coming of House Quasar so he’s not 100% sure that’s beTTeR…

Anyyyyywayyyyy, my point is that he’s trying to be smart about this.  So if there’s a chance it’ll fail, he’s not interested.  Plus, he doesn’t really wanna kill Ressa?????  But he does want Aram and baby!Aram dead so?????  (And like if he can kill Leck at the same time he wiLL but I do think Aram’s super careful about himself and Leck never being in public at the same time/at the same place to help minimize the chance that House Quasar will go extinct basically hahaha)  

So yes, Tor still might have done it iF there was some assurance that he and therefore Byssya won’t fall under fire, I can def see him doing it (and probs even then hiring someone to hire someone to hire someone to hire them and then all the middle men mysteriously disappear and Byssya is saFE.  But if there’s none of that, he probs manipulated Jareth into action or someone else altogether did it hahaha  I’m not really sure?????  So yeah idk what the Zeltrons’ previous record is (like do they have a 100% track record of turning in all the necessary kills etc) ++ whether or not they offer absolute confidentiality (but even then Torul knows about the Quasars’ ~methods for getting answers and wouldn’t trust anyone not to eventually crack) or some sort of guarantee of like yknow suicide in the event of near-capture or something but yeah if they don’t have those things, Torul will take matters into his own hands, if that makes sense?

MUAHAHAHAHAH no I totally feel you!!!!  And like honestly I feel like there’s no reason ~not to trust Tor and every reason ~to trust him, as far as the Harands go, atm, so I feel like he is a great candidate for betrayal *throws confetti* but yeah that’ll probs be down the road asp

The tide was running low and the palace towers rose above the sea like a cluster of monoliths.  Torul stalked through these spires, watching as waves lashed against the thick windows.  Lightning cracked, seeming to shake the oceanfloor itself, and thought it was only a little past midday, the skies were inky with the fury of the storm.

Torul had always loved storms in his way, but he knew the real power was not the lightning, but the sea.  It was erosion that had sculpted Byssya’s ancient caverns and mountains and though a shaft of electricity might smash a rock or two, the lasting things were wrought with time.  He’d learned patience watching these waves and he’d tried to feel them at his core when he’d been dispatched to Arvor to foster with House Quasar.  

Hearing a familiar footfall behind him, Torul did not need to turn to know who approached.  “So it’s true,” he observed.  The official transmission had just come from Torul’s foster brothers.  “Aram is claiming another planet for House Quasar.”  Torul came to a stop before one of the great windows, hands folded behind his back.  “We must have Vaane, Kol.  Already Aram has the Tarks in his pocket and now he moves on Reva.  We must have House Harand.”

omg these two!!!! okay so if arth is inviting her to do something and torul will be there, i feel like there’s every chance that brie does nOT want to be at that thing, but i think that he’s def dragged her to some official events/family dinners in the past and she’s like “ugh why” but goes b/c he’s her friend. anyway i think brie thinks that torul is hella boring (”he makes andros look exciting!” ~brie, probably) and she def doesn’t agree w/ him on a lot of points, but i think she also thinks he’s a better king than arth would be (also she doesn’t want arth to be king b/c then things would change and she doesn’t want that) so she’s cool w/ him staying in charge, she just doesn’t wanna hang out with him?? ever??? i do think she’s always v blunt about her opinions, even if she disagrees with the king and smh it’s probably best if she’s just never around him b/c she will tell him he’s wrong and doesn’t even try to phrase it so it doesn’t sound offensive …

No, but for realz????  What an incredible journey #thanksaram  Hmmm, ok so ~months later~ I’ve had some time to think about this and I think Torul might have something to do with it, in that I think he had a few conversations w Jareth where he was like ‘wow i guess there really is no hope for kahrin and aram now that ressa’s pregnant, huh?’ knowing Jareth would be like ACCURSED WENCH and take action but I don’t think Torul hired anyone or anything like that????  I think he is hoping that one of the other many factions will terminate the pregnancy first, but if not he’ll offer her sanctuary on Byssya and give her tea and kill her baby as harmlessly to her as he can.  

I think he intends to kill Leck first and then deal with Aram and then his child, if he yknow could ~manage~ an order????  Bc obv Leck is worst (even Torul prefers Emperor Aram to Emperor Leck) then Aram and yknow the baby’s gotta go but it’s not really a problem yet????  Although, actually now that I think about it, he might want to kill Aram first to destabilize and drive ppl into active revolt once they get a taste of Emperor Leck.  Bc you can kinda do your thing and get by as long as you don’t stick your neck out too much w Aram but Leck would whip up the whole Empire into revolt pr quickly?????  BUT ANYWAY machinations later.  Now Ressa hahahah

Anyway, torul is exactly ~touchy feely~ but I think he actually does care about the Harands a lot and he’d def gotten used to thinking of Ressa as his future wife and I think he thought that’d be agreeable, so I think she does have a special place in his cold heart such as it is hahaha  Which I think is part of why Aram’s union w her is particularly galling to him, yknow?

No, but I’m not 100% Kol knows about that tbh?  Tor plays things pr close to the chest and he absolutely will not brook failure.  Esp when it’s something that means so much to him.  I feel like part of why Torul values Kol so highly is bc Kol is utterly honest and utterly moral and under normal circumstances, that’s what Torul wants.  However, when it comes to this, he doesn’t want morality clouding the issue tbqh bc this is one of the few choices Torul ~isn’t making from a logical place.  His emotions are...complicated at best and savage.  He is a man of absolutes and he’s either in total control - or not at all.  This is one of the latter issues.

That being said, as Torul gets closer to actually ~acting on his revenge, he’s more likely to open up about it.  But Torul doesn’t really want to hear what Kol has to say bc the honest to gosh truth is...Torul knows what Kol will say and, furthermore, he knows Kol is right.  But all that runs counter to what Torul’s emotions want and, after being under lock and key for most of his life, they’ll have their day, yknow?

He also knows ultimately that he's a king and doesn’t have the luxury of being human, too, which is part of why he needs Kol and finds him so invaluable - and part of why he’ll probs eventually tell Kol.  I think Kol is kind of an external conscience for Torul, since Torul is pure logic vs pure animal rage he needs to be tempered by someone like Kol desperately.  And there’s a part of him that’ll want Kol to talk him out of it, as he gets closer to it - since, isn’t he just becoming what he hates in the Quasars if he kills this child?  A child that, given slightly different circumstances, might have been his own, instead?  (S/o to that one time he almost married Ressa)

But yeah.  Anyway, Tor tends to deal v directly with Kol and I do feel that it’s like the one secret he has from him and that, as it gets closer (and possibly v soon tbh) he’ll tell Kol.  He’s just too busy wrestling internally to want to add a voice other than his own to the calamity atm, even if it’s the sanest voice he knows.  Torul is a v internalized person and he likes to know where he stands, precisely, before hearing other opinions and yeah?????  He’s weird?????  I feel like I’m not making sense?  But in essence, Torul doesn’t ~do emotion and this is a purely emotional decision, whatever he might pretend, so he’s grappling w it and will behave erratically as a result so that’s fun #facepalm

Torul is the only living child of Arul III the Reader, King of Byssya

Arul was undoubtedly a good man and Torul privately loved his father dearly, but he also understands that, though a good father, he was not a good king

Arul is known to many, now, as the king who read while the galaxy burned but it wasn’t always that way

When Torul was a boy, his father was known as a wise and compassionate ruler

At that time, he was known fondly in Byssya as ‘The Reader’ for his erudition and not yet derisively for his laconic stance

Torul was the second of two children, having only a much older sister who, in many ways was more a mother to him

In fact, Tor’s memories of his actual mother are only very slight as she died when he was quite young

A smuggler brought a bought of the plague from Reva to Byssya, killing many before the cure put it to an end

The Queen, Torul’s mother, was amongst the number who perished

Arul was never the same again, retiring from public life almost entirely after that, leaving his mostly grown daughter and little Torul to do what they would

Torul watched as Arul allowed himself to be bullied into decisions by his advisers and other powerful men, willing to make almost any concession so they would leave him be, while he left Torul’s sister, Lidya, to deal with the consequences

This isn’t to say Arul lost touch, completely

He was extremely active in funding medical research and financing the training of new physicians and research into the medical sciences, hoping to prevent what happened to his wife from ever happening again

He also went on an active campaign against smugglers but that was a much less pleasant business

But perhaps they ought to be glad he did: afterall, it meant that, when the Quasars took over, no troops were smuggled in to Byssya to wreak havoc from the inside out

What the galaxy doesn’t know is Arul’s prudence: he saw the writing on the wall and closed all access to the planet – both incoming and outgoing – to save Byssya the worst of the attacks

Byssya remains more or less intact while Arvor and Vaane both burned

But he didn’t fight save in defense and he bent the knee as soon as he was asked

He also turned over his only son, Torul, to the cold care for the Quasars for a few years upon request

Torul fostered on Arvor while the rest of his family died on Byssya

Of course, even Arul’s measures in helping Byssya weren’t enough

They were still breached in places and many brave men and women were killed in defense of their planet, but if it weren’t for Arul’s famous caution, many more lives might have been lost

Still, Arul died within a year of the Quasar takeover and Torul, for one, doesn’t believe it was a coincidence

Arul wasn’t nearly as complacent as he seemed, but rather had a thousand plans and contingencies and machinations

Torul suspects poison but it can’t be proved, especially since Jaren insisted that his own personal physician conduct the autopsy – supposedly out of respect for the deceased king

Torul believes his father and sister had plans to overthrow the Quasars and that Jaren, suspicious of this, had them killed

Lidya and her husband died in a freak accident, apparently, their aircraft experiencing a random malfunction and exploding

The bodies were too horribly burnt for anything to be said of their actual cause of death

Once they were all dead, Torul was sent back home but not before Jaren placed a hand on his shoulder and said, “It is fortunate that you have faith in the true cause of House Quasar.  The gods punish nonbelievers swiftly and horribly.”

Torul was 22 when he began his rule on Byssya, bereft of family save a 10 year old nephew he barely knew and said nephew’s eighteen-year-old paternal uncle, Konstantine, who had been caring for him since the death of his parents, a few days prior

In truth, Torul does have a few concerns about House Secura, not the least of which being that Torul feels House Secura bullied Arul into permitting the marriage between Konstantine’s brother and Torul’s sister

Granted, Lidya was madly in love with her husband, but that doesn’t mean it was a prudent match

Tbh Torul is concerned that House Secura is the second coming of House Quasar – a minor House rising to prominence with ambitions to rise higher still

Now it has a nephew who could be king, later perhaps it will be a marriage that might result in a half Quasar, half Secura emperor – and then, after that, perhaps it’s burning the Empire and taking it for themselves

The precedent now exists – who’s to say what will happen next?

When Torul was 19, Arul entered into talks with the King of Karth regarding a marriage alliance between Torul and the eldest Karthine Princess, Adriaenne Tark, who was 12 at the time

They didn’t meet for any duration of time until Adriaenne was 18, when she came for a visit to Byssya and remained there for several months

In truth, Torul never cared much for the girl, but it still came as an utter shock when, two years later, she betrayed her entire family and turned her father, the King, in to the Quasars as traitors

Torul broke the engagement immediately and began looking around for a new potential bride

It was around that time that he entered into talks with House Harand, hoping to form an alliance with Vaane in order to overthrow House Quasar

That hope, too, was dashed when Aram Quasar married Caressa Harand, instead

Now, he’s set his sights upon Mira Harand, the younger sister

He will have his alliance; he will have his rebellion

The irony of his entire thought structure is that, however bad the rule of the Quasars is (and he is v sensible of this and uses it as his exterior     motivation), his real drive to tear down House Quasar comes much more from the desire for revenge than from anything else

House Quasar murdered his family; now he intends to eradicate them and he doesn’t intend to let anything stand in his way

Unlike Arantha Harand, Torul supports Orion Tark’s claim and does not intend to allow Caressa Harand’s baby to survive

As long as a single Quasar breathes, the Empire will not be secure for his or her claim will always exist

And as long as a single Quasar breathes, Torul’s vengeance will be incomplete

✝ Age: (36) ✝ Location: Byssya ✝ Relationships: Arthun Secura (nephew/heir presumptive), Vierra Connor (captain of kingsguard), Kol Fanaso (council member/friend) ✝ Description: Torul is a serious, stubborn, rarely-forgiving man with a strong sense of duty and justice. He neither dissembles nor flatters. He is determined to do what is best for Byssya (even at the expense of another planet). He secretly wishes to move against the Quasars and has approached Arantha Harand regarding an alliance with her planet. He initially wished to marry Caressa, but once she was married to Aram Quasar, he proposed to marry Mira when she comes of age. Although Arantha wishes to overthrow the Quasars as well, it would put her other sister in danger and while Torul is more than willing to risk her, Arantha is not. Torul is respected and feared by his people, but he is not loved. This has never bothered him, however, as he tends to consider love a weakness. He does privately care about his nephew, Arthun, even though he is an endless source of frustration.
