“Rick and Morty” is not like other shows about a protege and his master. 

It’s not Morty needing Rick to get him through life so much as Rick needing Morty to get him through life.

Morty is so good and generous and knows how to love and be supportive and helpful. Rick is the one who’s lost and trying to make a better person out of his broken self. He wants Morty’s influence on that. 

So episodes like these

Where Morty falls into the path of wickedness

really surprise and seem to visibly bother Rick. 

Because not only is his good grandson falling into bad influence and corrupting, but once again Rick proves that he’s a bad influence incapable of providing better. 

Morty’s gonna have to realize someday that this story isn’t about the kid learning from his elder. He isn’t here to learn Rick’s bad habits and adopt his nihilist lifestyle. 

He needs to realize that he’s here because RICK needs HIM. And start really actively helping Rick on the path to recovery in being a better person.
