Fic summary:
Alpha Aziraphale Engel is an astronaut being sent to plant a set of nuclear warheads in a small asteroid that is threatening Earth, as part of Operation Flaming Sword. Omega Anthony Crowley is his clandestine lover and assigned to communications for the mission. The journey will be long, lonely, and perilous, but our two heroes soon find that space is not the only source of danger for them.
Chapter summary:
With less than two weeks until Aziraphale reaches Ligur-666, Crowley tries to regroup, the morning after the attack. He finds that it's truly at times like these that you find out who's on your side... and who is not.
Excerpt:
When Aziraphale was young, his mother had been the epitome of everything an alpha should be: protective, devoted, wise, and unlike so many other alphas, level-headed.
"Our instincts push us," she had told him when he first presented, "but we are not animals, child. We are more than our base instincts, and we can make other choices."
He was finding it difficult to remember that now.
When Crowley had confessed, through a voice choked with tears, what Sandy had done to him, had tried to do, it was all Aziraphale could do to swallow his impotent rage. His inner alpha screamed for vengeance, to find Sandy and rend him painfully limb from limb for the atrocity he had committed toward his mate in their own home. He yearned to rush to Crowley's side, to comfort and protect him as he deserved, to cover him with Aziraphale's scent and reclaim him as his own.
Crowley hadn't wanted for Aziraphale to blame himself for what had happened to him, but it was hard. Aziraphale had never given that much credence to traditional gender roles, but he couldn't avoid the knowledge that if he'd been there with Crowley, none of this would have happened — not just the attack, but the issues with the press, the vandalism of Crowley's flat, none of it. He felt like the world's worst excuse for an alpha.
Aziraphale had gone off to space to save the world, and in doing so, he'd left his mate alone, in a world that seemed more and more like a dark forest filled with hungry wolves. What good is it, he asked himself, to save the Earth and everything on it, if I am unable to save the one person who matters the most to me?
