Iām such a sucker for diapered Simon.
Simonās freshly rescued by Grace and Rocky and he already has so many confusing feelings towards them (Mistrust, gratitude, frustration, fear). Now, on top of that heās having trouble with the simplest of things, it makes him feel so helpless.
Grace is the one who has to brooch the idea of needing diapers to Simon, something heās almost dreading more than Simon. Heās trying to, very gently, suggest diapers to the other man in a way that feels non- judgmental and causal. Despite how awkward it all feels.
Of course, he fails hard and Simon gets pretty upset about the whole thing. I figure the C.O.I was big on humiliation for punishment, physical punishment leads to injury, which leads to death, they really canāt afford any more death, prisoner or not. So, thatās what Simon immediately assumes this is, a punishment.
Except, he canāt fathom what heās being punished for. Sure, heās made a couple of messes, but he always cleans up the best he can, and heās been getting better! Grace had even promised he wasnāt mad about him having accidents, so now he feels like Grace is going back on his word.
Ryland has to explain that, no, itās not a punishment, heās not mad and heās not trying to embarrass Simon. Itās just that the Hail Mary doesnāt have a washing machine, Ryland can usually sterilize clothes using his freezing method, but that just wonāt work for pee covered pants. They really canāt afford to keep throwing away clothes and bed sheets.
Simon immediately feels bad for getting defensive and for ruining so much supplies. He, reluctantly, agrees because what else can he do? The cherry on top of this humiliation sundae is that Simon still isnāt accustomed to doing things with one hand. Trying to get changed is whole process if Simon tries to do it by himself, so Grace has to help.
Grace is trying so hard to not make things weird, he doesnāt like seeing Simon upset, but heās also not great at comforting people. What if he tries to lighten the mood by tell some jokes and Simon thinks he being made fun of? Or what if Grace stays silent and Simon thinks heās being judgmental? Or what if he tries to be reassure and Simon thinks heās being coddled?
Honestly, it doesnāt really matter what Grace does, Simon is going to be embarrassed either way. He tends to act out when heās really embarrassed, so heās often fussy during diaper changes. Telling Grace to āfuck off and shut up!ā More times than Grace can count. He feels bad about almost immediately after the change is done and apologizes, that wonāt stop him from doing it again next time.
Grace tries to respect Simon anatomy, but after the second blow out, he simply has to take matters into his own hands. He gets on a schedule of checking Simonās diaper every few hours, usually heāll just ask, Simonās facial expressions tell him more than his words do. But occasionally if heās really busy and doesnāt have time for arguing heāll just pull Simonās pants down really quick to see the wetness indicator. Grace also enlists the help of Rocky for this, getting the Eridian to tell him whenever Simon diaper is getting full.
