So Steven's last name...
In the episode "Mr. Universe" we find out that Steven's pretty disappointed, even mad, about the origins of his last name; the name that he's beginning to see as a burden after how horrible and abnormal his childhood was. He seems to see it as tied to all the horrible gem stuff he's experienced.
"You took it from a song?"
We even see Steven delete an embarrassing picture of Greg at the end of the episode, which seems to be symbolizing that he's starting to want to distance himself from, not only the horrible gem stuff, but the Universe part of himself that didn't allow him to grow up like a normal child.
Now this is where I think the foreshadowing, and logical conclusion of Steven's disliking of both gem stuff and the "Universe" name is leading: what if the show ends with an older Steven marrying Connie and taking her last name? Steven Maheswaran! Wouldn't that be ironic as heck given the name of the series? It just seems like the type of thing the show would do. On top of that...
"It's a not now, Steven."
Literally only 2 episodes before "Mr. Universe" was "Together Forever", which HEAVILY implied that both Steven and Connie know that it's almost inevitable that they're going to get married in the future. Garnet even said it herself!
"There was no future where you didn't propose to Connie."
It can't just be a coincidence how close these episodes are. So, yep! I basically believe that Steven will take the "Maheswaran" name at the end of the series to symbolize him finally being done with everything that happened in his childhood, and wanting to move on to a more normal life.
And, yes, I know that women typically take the man's last name in marriage, but this show isn't new to giving the finger to norms like that.
