For Jyushimatsu, the memories of classmates’ judgmental laughter and stares arere just about enough to wipe his usual giddy grin away.

For Todomatsu, his memory here seems to come from somewhere in Year 3 or nearing graduation and there’s been speculation if it’s what planted the “dry monster”, “go my own way” kind of nature in him eventually.

If he couldn’t rely on a brother for advice, he’d just do whatever he wanted himself…except of course, we see his brothers and his own faults still hold him back, and ultimately he’s a sextuplet no matter what.

Just as our present-day Ichimatsu was ready to try to confront the 18!Karamatsu but other things happened, 18!Karamatsu watched 18!Ichimatsu walk by but just couldn’t say anything.

A vaguer version of that infamous rooftop fight plays out…

Now, if you go by the “always looped” theory, their memories cut off because of the paradox and may have been selective, but well, I think there’s that whole way of meeting the theories halfway (and kind of very Back to the Future-y!) where a certain event may not have changed every single thing but it still gave the same exact results + a little bonus.

Plus, as the memories go on here, we’d see they walked home in sadness. The movie has lots of rewatch value for sure, to go back and refresh your memory and analyze different lines and points.

Todomatsu gets his turn to make a revelation too startling to possibly believe

The 66th graduating year’s classes of Akatsuka High sing the traditional anthem for leaving school, 仰げば尊し/“With an Eternally Grateful Heart“, adapted from T.H. Brosnan’s “The Song for the Close of School”.

Some sullen Matsuno brothers, with only Ichimatsu not seen in head-on shots, are given special focus in the scene along with certain classmates and others near to them. We know Chibita is a high school dropout, but I’m curious just how old Hatabou must be in relation…

And of course, Shonosuke Hijirisawa is there, whether you want to imagine that “-san in Hell” setting is applicable to him spying on them years before, or it’s just his usual random guy self.

Well, here is Ichi in this one shot, standing by Oso in their class grouping:

As everyone else departs the school or stays about to continue celebrating, a heated argument begins on the roof and the present-day Matsunos are on their way.

Ichimatsu becomes impatient and yells at Karamatsu, Choromatsu and Osomatsu attempt to intervene, and it starts going downhill from there:

The graduation music continues to drown out any words to the argument, but it’s clear Karamatsu finally loses it and winds up indirectly causing another’s injury…

After continued attempts to keep 18Osomatsu and Karamatsu from fighting, things seem to be okay…

For Karamatsu, going by the distancing here, this is another Year 3 memory of him having to watch his brothers being antisocial at the table and being kept awake by the trouble.

Karamatsu, words drowned out by the anthem, orders Osomatsu to the rooftop and others follow suit. When it comes to Ichimatsu, being ignored by Yanagida leads him to be the last one out.
