Sometimes he found himself glad that their community was small and tightly knit. Everyone at least knew of everyone else and therefore, the two of them standing side by side, talking out in the open, would not come across as odd to anyone who caught sight of them. “Nor is it mine, though I have not disliked the celebrations” he replied, not at all surprised by Bellatrix’s answer. He was quite sure that a great deal many people at the day’s celebrations were not fond of it. It was a tradition that they continued simply because it was a tradition, whether they enjoyed it or not.
He pursed his lips for a moment at the question, before turning his head towards her a little with a raised eyebrow. He knew what Bellatrix thought of Ava and his impending marriage to her, and she in turn knew how he felt. She was one of the few people he had ever been able to trust with the truth, because he knew she wasn’t a gossip and would not share his misgivings and desires, but he wasn’t sure how to communicate that the little Nott had started to get under his skin. “She’s not my wife yet, though things are looking promising” he said, his lips twitching. “She is not exactly as I had first assumed her to be”.
The aristocracy had always felt a need to be seen by their peers in an attempt to remind the world that they were here and that they still held their lofty status. No one here could afford to fade into obscurity, hoping that they could still hold on to their fortune and it was one of the most frustrating things in the world for her. She hated having to put on a mask in order to be taken seriously by these people. Her habit of doing whatever she wanted had gotten her in trouble when she was in school, but at least it had been the genuine version of herself. This act of playing nice still rankled her and only her husband and her lover could be trusted.
That was part of the reason that she had agreed to help Octavius with the young Ava girl, despite her own history with Tristan. He was someone that she considered in her circle, although perhaps not the innermost rung and she wanted to help him get what he wanted. “In a good way or a bad way?” she asked him, though she was sure that she knew the answer. It was written on his face and the way he nearly smiled just at the mention of her. “It seems you’ve been doing just fine with little help from me. I’ll just be here to help maintain the longevity of it.”
