Racism against Indians is actually a little insane when you consider how widespread it is even among liberals and leftists . Even people who consider themselves to be progressive will laugh at call center or tech support jokes. All scammers are inherently indian. It’s okay to laugh at jokes making fun of Indians for their feelings towards animals or how they drive. i'm finally getting caught up on cr4 e31 and man. the clear influences of the player's real life culture in their characters (and in the worldbuilding in brennan's case) is amazing and adds such a richness. like thaisha is so clearly influenced by like. black american folk culture Especially with the orcish revolutionaries. idk if liam is irish but he's at least running with a lot of the irish american working class stuff brennan injected into the world in terms of the hal and the culture of the round. and azune's whole bit about not having anyone to speak his native language to and his disconnect to his own identity (diaspora narrative). i Love when real world cultures are reflected in fiction it's so good.

yeah we have parallel characters, and i think we should start using "perpendicular" to describe them too!!

what i mean is two different characters that are vastly different, but throughout the story, their roles/personalities "swap". they fill the place in the story the other character previously held.

for example, at the beginning of deltarune, susie is blunt, rude, dislikes authority, and is the fighter of the fun gang while ralsei is humble, kind, and a healer. slowly, susie's personality softens and she becomes kinder and more considerate and learns healing magic. as of chapter 5, ralsei is much more prone to anger and annoyance and he is shown to know offensive magic. they have begun showing similiar traits to what the other had in the beginning.

makes me wonder how many other stories have this kinda dynamic!!!

Everyone needs to stop saying death of the author when what they mean is separating the art from the artist. Like FR stop it.

I know it's mainly just ignorance of what the term means but I do wonder if this happens in part bcos 'death of the author' sounds so dramatic like oh this author is dead to me, I don't care about them anymore. Whereas 'separating the art from the artist' is a lot more neutral and well. In CERTAIN CASES it is kind of immediately apparent that you cannot.

Death of the Author is a term coined by Roland Barthes for his essay of the same name in 1967.

In brief: death of the author is the concept that analysis of a work of art should not be focused on the artist's intent; the artist's intended reading of their own work is just A reading and no more valid than anyone else's.

A good straightforward example of this in practice is the response to Andy Weir and Project Hail Mary. Weir is adamant that his work contains no politics but I would say that PHM is pretty clearly a story about climate change.

You can apply death of the author to any work of fiction and it has nothing to do with whether the author is a good or bad person.

i really thought the point of "being lgbt+ doesn't absolve you of racism as a white person" was that white people arent absolved of racism by being marginalized but it really seems like people think other marginalizations make it okay. no being disabled doesn't do it. no being poor doesnt do it. we need to fight against racism actively no matter what.
