Vocaloid Recommendation Saturday!

This song is truly amazing, the beat is catchy, the lyrics are meaningful, and the animation is stunning. This song explores the concept of Pandora's box and schrodinger's cat (the singer is literally a cat), and can be interpreted in multiple ways, but I'll share my interpretation.

I personally interpret this song about the frustration of not knowing if someone likes you romantically. I think the last line of the chorus is the most explicit line leading to this interpretation,"Hold your lowest regards for my heart." This, to me at least, shows that the song has some emotional implication, and the way it's phrased sounds more romantically yearning than not.

Another few lines that lend to this interpretation,"I know it's always been there in the undertow" as in the implications of who the person the singer is talking says can be taken as flirtation and signs, which is a common thing for people to thing about their crushes,"To tell the truth, it isn't funny, To be so cruel, to tease the hungry" in this case I think this is mostly about what we were just talking about, except now the singer has moved on to doubting their read of the situation.

Either way, the fact that everyone comes out of this song with at least a slightly different interpretation of the meaning speaks to the skill of it. You could say that the audience got their own box to try and crack.

Vocaloid Song of the Week!⭐🪽

I wanna start a series where I recommend a Vocaloid song I really love once a week so I can a) yap more about Vocaloid, b) promote some songs I love that I think people should know, and c) hopefully promote some lesser known songs and artists!

This week's song: Retry Now by Nakiso

TW for suggested murder/suicide

I'm usually not a massive Nakiso fan regrettably, but I've loved this one ever since I first heard it. It's been stuck in my head ever since it released! I love me some dissonance, so I'm a huge fan of the soft, cutesy Miku tuning paired with the dark theme and sound of the song (bar the chorus). I also absolutely love the cutesy magical girl Miku design a whole lot, and how it and the cute, happy appearance of the chorus contrast with the rest of the song and the story. There's also a load of little details and Easter eggs in the video to find that tie in really nicely with the theme of reincarnation and the story being told. I'm pretty hyped about having another magical girl themed Vocaloid song too lol. Maybe I'm just missing out, but I literally only know two and it feels like a huge hole in the market to me.

I've noticed that a lot of vocaloid songs have gimmicks, more than other types of media. For example,"What if all the vocaloids were at war?", "Teto but Gyaru" etc.

I don't know how to feel about this, because on one hand it's very creative in some cases and creates amazing designs, but on the other it also drives people to focus too much on the gimmick sometimes, making the lyrics not as meaningful.

People might also do this to get their songs to blow up. In the community, people seem to latch onto a solid visual image and make that the basis of the trend, like the mesmerizer dancing and visuals, the rabbit hole music video, or Miku (the song not the vocaloid). Producers of gimmick music, and this is just speculation, might think that their gimmick might help the song lack on.

Anyways, what are you guy's thoughts/opinions on the matter of gimmicks in Vocaloid?

I hate AI generated music, and not just because of it's numerous harmful environmental impacts, but because I've had to steer away from contemporary classical and lofi altogether because it's simply flooded with AI slop. In my classrooms, they put on music, but it's only that and the chords never progress, it drives me insane. A lot of it's studio ghibli themed too, with is extra awful considering Miyazaki's beliefs. The only real work-around I've found is movie soundtracks, but those can be hard to find.
