The first books that I introduced to my son are touch and feel baby books. These books are great for kids up to preschool. My son still shows interests in touch and feel books at the age of 3.
It’s never too early to start reading books.
While it is unrealistic to expect a baby to read, read books to your baby and read books together with your baby are surely fun and enjoyable. One of the best things that I like about touch and feel book is that kids get to reach out and touch the different textures. It helps them to develop their senses. You will be amazed to see their reactions when they touch something new, e.g. sandpaper. Take this opportunity to read the words to your kids and describe the pictures. They may not understand it for the first time, but they will pick up concepts and words gradually. Never underestimate the ability of your kids.
Now, let’s take a look at 3 popular touch and feel baby books on Amazon.com. Each of these books have over 1000 customer reviews and all have a rating of over 4 stars out of 5.
1. Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book) by Dorothy Kunhardt
Pat the Bunny is a classic touch and feel baby book. There are three formats of this title: hardcover, paperback, and plastic comb. The most popular edition is the plastic comb edition. The size of the plastic comb book is about 5.3 x 1.1 x 5.6 inches, which is around half the size of the hardcover edition. The size is just right for young kids to hold on to the book by themselves. There are a total of 20 pages on which kids can touch different textures, flip flap for peek a boo, or look into a mirror, etc. You can expect more interactive elements than touch-and-feel from this book.
Note that not all parents like the plastic comb edition as it tends to be fragile when compare to hardcover edition, especially when you leave the book for your kids to read (or play) alone. Young kids like pulling things and tearing paper. Their play can sometimes be rough. Do take it into your consideration when deciding which edition to buy. Other than this, this is a perfect touch and feel book for babies. I would highly recommend it.

2. Animals (Baby Touch and Feel) by DK Publishing
DK Publishing has a series of touch and feel baby books. The most popular one is Animals. There are 14 pages in this book, featuring easy to recognize animals such as bunnies, monkey, elephant, etc. The size of the book is 5.4 x 1.1 x 5.4 inches. It is very easy to hold even for young babies who are not ready to sit up. One animal is featured on each page and there is an area of texture to touch and feel, a sound/action description about the animal, and the name of the animal. There is plenty to go through with you kids in this books and animals do catch the attention to young kids. It is a very good introductory book for kids about animals.
However, some parents were disappointed about the variety of textures given in the book. For example, fur is repetitive; it is found in puppy, penguin, and rabbit. And some of the materials are misleading; such as shiny materials for grass and butterfly’s wings. In my opinion, as long as it carries the accurate facts, it is a neat book to buy for your babies. Plus, animals are usually the most interesting topics to talk about with your kids. Think twice about the “misleading textures” as pointed out by other parents. Are you OK with these? How are you going to present and explain to your kids? If you choose to let go of this part of comment, Animals (Baby Touch and Feel) is definitely one of the best touch and feel baby books under $10.
3. Touch and Feel Picture Cards: First Words by DK Publishing
DK Publishing has another touch and feel series in the format of flash cards. Each title comes in 16 flash cards packed in a box with a velcro closure. The flash cards are very sturdy and the box is great for storage. Each card features an object on one side and part of the object has an area for touch and feel. You will find the name of the object at the bottom of the card. On the other side of the card, you will find a set of guided questions to ask your little ones. These simple questions are great to aid interactive activity and keep the conversation going. There is also information about how to say the name of the object in different languages, such as English, Spanish, German, and Chinese. It is especially useful if you’re raising your kids in a bilingual family.
The biggest concern over these flash cards is the number of cards that were offered in a set. Some parents hoped for a larger quantity of cards so their little ones can be kept entertained for a longer period of time. I would absolutely recommend this series of flash cards to all bilingual family. It is very useful and you almost cannot find another option elsewhere, especially if you want to to have the language components presented on the same materials.
