What does family mean?
The everyday, the banal, the small things, the big things, the special, the daily routine, togetherness, life.
We seek comfort, security and protection from our family.
Family sustains us.

Conceptual Process - the cutting floor
Conceptual Process means you get lots of ideas and your mind is racing: which will be the best idea at getting the concept across, which will work, what will be the strongest artwork. This is a list of some of the ideas that did not make it today but they might get legs at another time.
Family Cooking Pot movie - put family icons, relics, events, photos, clothes, memories, music etc into a cooking pot and see what happens.
Cut up a family portrait and serve on plates
Paint family portraits on dinner plates and hang in the hallway
Quilt of family dinner photos - comfort, ritual, protection, identity
Photo of the empty dining table after the meal. Is this the final thing left - what did they eat, what did they say, who was there, what were the sounds
Family Crest/Coat of Arms which symbolises identity and values, passed down thru generations. On the coat of arms have a broken dinner plate and a knife and fork

Experimenting with Conceptual Process. This was an idea that did not come across as I had foreseen and as such ended up on the cutting floor.

Recipe and Alien Methods
Recipes are often used in the family home to create interesting meals for the family - there are so many family meals to prepare 365 days a year.
As an avid cook and kitchen alchemist I often surprise the family with a new recipe – to interest both the family and myself in the daily ritual of family dinners. Whilst looking at recipe books, and thinking of my artwork for conceptual process I was taken by a family favourite recipe.
Using Alien Methods and also being uncreative I created the following artwork.
FAVOURITE FAMILY RECIPE
SERVES 4
500g PATIENCE, CUT IN HALF
2 T OF DREAMS
125 ml HOPE
80 ml HOLIDAYS
2 T TIME
4 x 150g ROUTINE
SMALL HANDFUL OF LAUGHS
A PINCH OF LOVE
A DASH OF IMPORTANCE
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Put the Patience in a large baking tray, drizzle with the dreams. Roast for 25 minutes, turning once, until golden and crispy.
Meanwhile, stir together the Hope, Holidays and Time.
Heat a large frying pan, cook the Routine for 3 minutes, then turn over and cook for another minute. Remove from the pan and leave to rest for 3 minutes.
Spoon the Patience onto plates, dollop with the Hope dressing and scatter with Laughs and Love. Top with Routine and add a dash of Importance.
“For a happier version, repeat often”
Instruction Paintings
Yoko Ono
Instruction paintings
Grapefruit is a book of instructions which encourage you as the viewer to complete the artwork, it is imaginative and original. Published first in 1964 in Tokyo. There are no images just black and white text which is quite powerful and thought provoking. I think you need to pause at the end of each painting to absorb the essence of the instructions. As the viewer you need to create the painting.
Mention of instruction paintings sparked a strong interest to find out more. Research into Yoko Ono’s work broadened my artistic vision about creating my own artwork for Conceptual Process. What is an artwork and how can I increase the experience of the spectator.
A selection that inspired my imagination include:
PAINTING FOR THE WIND
Cut a hole in a bag filled with seeds
of any kings and place the bag where
there is wind
1961 summer
PAINTING FOR THE SKIES
Drill a hole in the sky.
Cut out a paper the same size
as the hole.
Burn the paper.
The sky should be pure blue.
1962 summer
TIME PAINTING
Make a painting in which the color
comes out only under a certain light
at a certain time of day.
Make it a very short time.

Is the Family Dinner Meal Important
A the time of collation my survey monkey (Document 3) results demonstrate interesting facts about the Family Dinner Meal in North Shore Australia.
The results support the claim that a family dinner meal is important. On a scale of 1 to 5 - 88% of respondents agree that having a regular family dinner meal together is very important (and rated it as a 5).
73% of respondents indicate that they eat together less often then when they grew up.
On an average 7 day week 70% indicate that they eat together more than 5 times a week as a family.
These results are a snippet of mostly north shore homes and does raise questions about the ritual of Australians eating together as a family.
Whilst they eat together less often than when they grew up 60 % are content with the number of evenings they share the evening meal with their families.
Eating the evening meal together is still a ritual but it is happening less often than when the parents of today grew up - it is a changing tradition.

Exploring the concept of family and the family meal, I developed a short survey and polled my friends. Designing and constructing the questions helped to tighten my concept and to highlight certain factors. To see the survey click on the link.
Family Dinner Conceptual Map (Document 2)
After experimenting with mapping and other sound maps from the kitchen I found this sound map of family dinner the most effective for mapping the concept of family.
The concept of a family meal involves the family eating, this seemed an fascinating concept to map and resulted in experimenting with sound mapping the family at dinner. The essence of the family meal involves conversation and eating together as a family unit, the ritual, the coming together and discussing the day’s events, even the comfortable silences are part of the recipe for family dinners.
Conceptual Process
I had identified the concept of family and was investigating mapping conceptually. Firstly I generated a multitude of ideas about family - what is a family, who is in a family, what do families do together, routines, holidays, extended family, everyday life etc. I began to think about mapping in relation to family and I started in the kitchen.
I wanted to make muffins so decided to map out baking the muffins. Starting with getting out the recipe and then the ingredients… looking at my movements in the kitchen.
The first map was too obvious and not experimental enough so I tried again with less map keys.
Makes you rethink what the work morning means.
