Different Types of Coupling
The reliability and high performance of the machinery depend upon the exceptional coupling. In the steel plant industry, it’s the core component of machinery elements. It is useful in power transmission systems in different industries and manufacturing environments. Over the years, the demand for coupling has been high in various industries, and engineers also designed the element in a way that suits different service and application environment conditions.
Couplings are primarily used to transfer rotational movement in shafts. In the process, coupling connects two shafts for torque transmission in many applications. It can also connect two units, such as a motor and a generator, or it can connect a shaft to another and form a long line shaft with a standard length, e.g., 6m to 8m. In addition, it forms high temperatures and can transmit axial thrust loads between machines and axial growth.
Types of Coupling
Couplings are designed for different industrial purposes with different shapes and sizes. Some types of couplings are designed for generic applications, while some are custom-designed for only specific circumstances.
● Rigid coupling
Rigid couplings are used for a little alignment and little or no movements between shafts. This type of coupling controls the undesired shaft movements and is mostly used in vertical applications. Also, used to rotate large turbines and high torque. It acts as a continuous rotator in between the turbine’s cylinders.
● Flexible coupling
A flexible coupling is a type of shaft coupling that relatively moves constituent shafts at a certain degree and motion. It ensures the isolation of vibration between the shafts. It improves the lifespan of the shafts or machines. A flexible coupling ideally fixes certain machinery issues by featuring dynamic functionalities. It’s one of the prominent couplings used by several industries, and Ru-Steel Flexible Couplings are a popular one.
● Sleeve or muff coupling
It's a rigid type of coupling, consisting of a hollow cylinder or muff. The shafts of this coupling are connected with the internal and external diameter. Motion and slippage between the shafts and sleeves can be restricted in this type of coupling through a gib head key. It is used in light to medium torques with a few moving parts.
● Flange coupling
In this type of coupling, a flange is slipped and connected between the shafts. Then, through studs or bolts, the flanges are secured and used in medium to heavy applications. Unprotected, protected, and marine are the three fundamental types of flange coupling.
To The Sum Up
With different industrial use, the coupling is available in different types, from rigid to flexible. Multiple functions are performed by a shaft coupling, such as power transmission, heat flow interruption, overload protection, and many more. In addition, it has features to reduce shock and vibration. Different designs of coupling incorporated different uses. Ru-Steel Flexible Couplings, Samiflex Elastic Couplings, and STS Metal Bellow Couplings are some of the highly demanded couplings.
