“HAPPINESS” by Shūzō Oshimi
For our first manga recommendation, we have “HAPPINESS”. Written by the amazing Shūzō Oshimi, “HAPPINESS” tells the story of a group of students in a town thats been victim of unknown murders as of recent. Our main character, Makoto Okazaki, is a perfect target for bullies and a secret pervert. One day, as he walks over to a friends house to return a DVD during the night, he is jumped by a girl covered in blood whom digs her fangs deep into his neck. As Okazaki is taken over by excruciating pain, The girl asks him, “Is this how you want to die? Or... Do you wish... to become like me?”. As Okazaki cries that he doesn’t want to die, the girl smiles at him and disappears into the night. After that, he passes out, just to wake up on a hospital bed with an intolerance for light, and an immense thirst.
What will become of Okazaki’s everyday life, and how will he cope with what he’s become? A tragic take on a vampire story by the man that brought you “The Flowers of Evil”.
