Okokok I have put my finger on the thing that's been off for me this season - without denying any of the many sequences of glory, comedy, whimsy, and holy shit acting skills - and it's that it feels for the first time like we're watching a show with a moral agenda
S1&2 were not giving us an opinion on the relationships, they were just showing them to us, asking us questions about them, poking at them from different directions
TVL has none of this ambiguity or curiosity, and, among other tiny missteps, it's strangling the relationship between Lestat and Gabrielle - a relationship that means a lot to book readers and is among the most compelling, confusing, and complex relationships in the series.
Rolin and co have essentially said, "No, it is not compelling, it is not confusing or complex or chewy, it is simply sexual abuse beginning in childhood and carrying over into vampirehood and that is bad; Gabrielle is a predator and Lestat is a victim; this is the conclusion we want you to come to"
and while I support telling the story you want to tell even under the umbrella of adaptation, this is an
