       cleo’s favorite part about following beverly around like a stray dog is when bev goes to do ceramics. she knows that beverly is really good at whatever she makes & cleo hopes that one day she’ll be able to be just as good at it as she is. there is no worry about cleo not asking enough questions, if anything she asks the same set of questions every other week or so just as reassurance. the first thing cleo ever made  (   on her own   )  looked something along the lines like THIS & now it’s kind of customary for beverly to help cleo with whatever she’s making so something like that is never created again.

       “   salut tate.   ”  the words had flooded from the small girl’s lips before she could stop herself. as soon as she saw the other she had to make it a point to talk to him, much against what her brain was telling her - her heart said otherwise.  “   comment avez-vous été ?   ”  cleotilde couldn’t remember the last time she had spoken to her ex, yet she felt a little ASHAMED that it took an event put on by the academy to go up & talk to him. she had felt -- almost bad for appearing out of no where, a caramel apple in her hand that cleo had just bought before her hazel hues laid on him. she just hoped she wasn’t a burden at this point.

       “   this whole night is like straight out of a movie !   ”  cleo has on the smallest smile, yet there are still dimples in her cheeks as she talks to beverly.  “   i feel wrong for not having a date. i know it shouldn’t matter at all, but it’s still just a little bit weird.   ”  despite her small size, at 5′4″, cleo was moving awfully quick around the area as she continued on talking & of course popping bev a question.  “   so ! what is your stance on disney movies ? i guess pixar as well !   ”

cassidy thought he was in the clear; nobody to watch him sulk to himself underneath a tree. “stupid, stupid, stupid…” he paced back and forth while the wind blew the leaves along with him. he grabbed his head, tufts of hair peaking through his fingers. it was like his father’s voice filled his head, telling him that’d surely drop out and end up back home again within a couple of months. cassidy let out a loud groan, lifting his head up to find cleo benson in his view. clearly, he wasn’t alone. “…that wasn’t anything, i-i promise.”

          any moment that cleotilde was feeling stressed out or overwhelmed she found herself restlessly playing with her hands & also always found herself wandering off outside. being mentally tired was not something cleo was too fond of & looking up to see another person clutching their hair made cleo think about her own negative tendencies.  “   you’re all good,   ” she said, taking a deep breath as she watched the other. god cleo just wished she could pick & pull at her hair but seeing as cassidy seemed as stressed as her, perhaps they could figure out a way to de-stress.  “   it’s... it’s okay. you’re not stupid you know.    ----- why don’t we go do something ? a puzzle, some sculpting, cooking, something with our hands would take our mind off things.   ”

“you know, i always think about buying a keurig or a nespresso but i totally space out and only remember to order one at like four in the morning and then i think about it a little more and convince myself i don’t need it. which, clearly, is wrong.” lydia sighed with a shake of her head, eyes lowering to see the dark, disappointing liquid in her cup. “wait, seriously?” she perked up immediately meeting cleo’s eyes. “anything that’s not this - you are a lifesaver. how can i ever repay you for literally saving my life?”

       “   i completely understand what you mean, it took me a year to finally up & go buy my espresso machine. i don’t regret it whatsoever though, i use it almost every single day.   ”  there’s a light & bubbly laugh that falls from her lips before cleo shrugs one of her shoulders.  “   yes seriously ! i have an abundance of espresso beans & syrups & creamer, i don’t think it would hurt my machine or anything. ----- i think that as long as you tell me about your dreams or nightmares you had the previous night it’s a fair exchange.   ”

carson ! 

a distant smile resided on carson’s lips as her eyes were cast out one of the windows of the academy. there was a wind gently brushing over the tree tops, a delicate touch that moved the leaves in a dance. “es wäre schön heute draußen zu sein,” she murmured to herself, shifting the books in her arms so that it was cradled not just by the one but with both. a soft, delighted hum rose in her throat as her gaze fell to the grass to see it ripple with the wind’s caress. it truly was a nice day. so nice, that it entraptured her enough that she didn’t notice that she was blocking the way for someone. the slight closing in movement in her periferal was enough to immediately pull her away from the scenery and cause her to flinch back in surprise. the startled, jerky movement had her arms loosening and sent her books to the ground with a loud thud. she winced, eyes flickering up to the familiar face before immediately dropping to the ground as she managed to get a few words stumbling past her lips. “i, um, sorry, i didn’t see you.” she crouched almost immediately to hide her face, which was getting progressively pinker the more seconds passed, and gather the books that had fallen along with the few notecards that had escaped between their pages.           “   why men great ‘till they gotta be great ?   ”  the brunette’s voice is loud as she belches the lyrics to her song. there’s a sway of her hips as she walks through the hall & it’s obvious that she is paying no attention to where she’s going. there was no major reason for  ‘   truth hurts   ’  by lizzo to be playing through cleotilde’s headphones, yet she had recently been vibing with the song.  “   don’t text me tell it straight to my fa ---     ”  the next thing cleo knows is that there’s a loud thunk that she can hear over her music & at the same time she knows that she’s ran into someone.  “   shoot,   ”  were the words to come out of her parted lips as she recognized the person she bumped into as carson.  “   oh hey.   ”  her words were, soft, almost skittish. cleo hadn’t spoken to the other for a while & it was definitely cleo’s fault.  “   you’re okay. i should’ve been paying more attention to where i was going.   ”

“no, no but listen.” fletch snapped his fingers twice, trying to get undivided attention even though he didn’t deserve it. “deviled eggs are respectively in the same food category as twice baked potatoes and you can’t change my mind. you cook a potato, scoop out all that good, good you know know? mix it up with some sour cream and cheese and bacon bits and fuck if you’re being real wild slap some green onions in it too. and then you stick that shit back into it’s lil potato home and bake it off. deviled eggs are the same. hard boil them, scoop out the middle, slap it back in.” in time with his thoughts, fletcher’s stomach growled so loud anyone a yard from him could hear and funny enough, he wasn’t even craving deviled eggs or twice baked potatoes. “you feel me?”

          for a split second, cleotilde had no idea what it was the person before her was going off on or what had even brought the comparison of baked potatoes & deviled eggs. but cleo was hooked on what he was saying & had continued to listen until then end in which she smiled wide & gave a small shake of her head.  “   i think you’re right in one, the fact that they’re in the same category & two, on how you make your loaded potatoes. the REAL question now is how you make the center of your deviled eggs & yes you will be judged.   ”

lydia ! 

lydia inhaled her cup of coffee, focus completely on the liquid energy she was relying on to be a semblance of a person today. it wasn’t her fault inspiration hit often at two-thirty in the morning and somehow she was still expected to make it through classes. taking a seat in the dining hall, lydia sighed loudly, finally putting her cup down and spotting someone. “i don’t care how shitty this coffee is, i need an i.v stat.”

          one thing was for sure: cleotilde benson was not a morning person. she knew that before coming to brier, yet the school only managed to make the matter worse. her first year, cleo struggled getting out of bed every morning & halfway into her second year she knew she had to make a change. that change was buying an espresso machine.  “   i ditched that gross coffee almost a year ago.   ”  her words fled from her mouth quickly as she moved to sit across the other, a blueberry muffin in hand.  “   you are free to swing by whenever for a good cup of coffee. it even has a steamer attached & i can assure you i am no barista, but i can make a good coffee.   ”

humming to herself as she waited for cleo to decide, she began to gather the miscellaneous materials she would need. while she wouldn’t admit it aloud, there was something calming about following her usual routine, spending a few designated hours just working on whatever project that seemed to come to her in the moment. but there was also something satisfying in finishing a task with a set of parameters, parameters that let beverly know she was on track in whatever it was she was doing. it left no doubts or senses of ‘ what if’s ’ which was a nice break from her life as a budding spy. “ i figured you’d like that one. ” she mused, mentally laughing at a joke that cleo wouldn’t understand.

          dark hues seemed to be entranced with what beverly was doing & once the other did something note-worthy, cleo was quick to scribble it down. yet it wasn’t always that easy; when the she had first started studying beverly, the brunette saw it just as another analytical task. figure out how to be a strong, independent, & a badass woman. never did she think that she would end up close to beverly nor did she ever think she would be as close to the richetti family in general. there cleotilde was though, feeling closer to this family than she had felt to her own.  “   what’s the most important object you own ?   ”  her words were soft & spoken with curiosity behind them. there was no point to exact reason for most questions cleo asked, more than often she would just ask the first question to pop into her head.

it was just another morning of cleo trailing behind her, scribbling into the notebook she always seemed to be carrying around with her. while curious as to what it was she was writing, beverly didn’t care enough to ask, instead going about her day as the newly transferred field operative shadowed her. leisurely taking out the designs she had sketched out last night, she set them out in front of her, pondering which one she would attempt to bring to life. “ do any of these stand out to you? ” she asked, her soft voice barely loud enough for cleo to hear her. 

          if there was one thing that cleo would never get tired of it was her cursive writing in the warn-down leather book. it was a present from her brothers & now was serving the purpose of teaching cleo  ‘   how to become a badass bitch ft. beverly richetti.   ’  this book had pages upon pages already filled & as soon as the other girl spoke, cleo’s dark eyes were lifted off the paper & locked onto bev.  “   oh ?   ”  she’s glimpsing down at her sketches, smiling at every one of them.  “   i think they all are GREAT,   ”  she pauses, knowing that she probably isn’t helping by saying that,  “   i think that the one on the left stands out the most though !   ”
