oh it’s no problem!! tbh last time i answered this question i had nothing but i might have something now? i’ve enjoyed what i’ve read from beambayonet! his devilman fics are more or less AUs with found media (notes, letters, etc). it’s cool!

tbh, i am sooooo picky with fanfics, and even more so with devilman. if ryo isn’t written like he is in the manga ONLY (mostly based on vol 1), i’m not interested!

Cannot believe I’m getting unsolicited fanart, one of the highest compliments on a fic. And thank you for the rec!

Something that fascinates me about Ryo getting his memories back and reverting to Satan, an angel, is he talks about how he felt fear as a human but doesn’t feel that fear anymore, yet the love he developed for Akira is still a big part of him. Is Nagai saying fear is something unique to humanity but love is universal? Or did that love just stay with Satan somehow? I don’t know that Nagai meant to make that point, but it’s something I think about a lot. That fear is also part of what drove Ryo to the levels of anxiety we see while he was still human, which can maybe be read as an unfamiliar emotion clashing with the subconscious reality of his true being. It destabilizes him because it’s unnatural to him. Falling in love with Akira doesn’t do this him, doesn’t feel like a foreign, unpleasant emotion. He never complains or feels disgusted by it. Of course in the original manga it’s the fear that humans allow in their hearts that drives them to war that Nagai is cautioning against, so it’s only expected that fear is the emotion focused on in the text. In the end, love was not enough.

(my favorite random piece of crybaby trivia is ryo’s car, the orochi, is named after the 8 headed yamata no orochi, so he drives and rides a dragon. nice detail.)

I've only watched crybaby so how is ryokira presented in the manga/ovas?

I hope you do not mind if I link someone else’s post. It is a bit of a long read, but it does explain the difference on how Ryo and his relationship with Akira is portrayed.

One thing that is not touched upon in apprenticekoifish’s post is how Ryo would help Akira fight demons and not just be the bystander with a camera. In volume 2 Ryo senses that something is wrong and leaves the hospital to help Akira. (This happens in the Demon Bird OVA as well) (He also goes after a demon on his own in volume 3 I believe.)

Another big difference compared to Crybaby and the Manga is that Ryo is not the one to introduce the whole world to demons. In the manga demons start attacking on their own and humans try to fight back.

Akira wants to join the fight to save humanity and Ryo tries to reason with him that he can’t fight all of those demons on his own. He claims that it is better to wait for the right moment to attack. 

Even when Ryo does realize that everything that he has been saying has been coming true he goes back to his father’s house to discover the answers and to help Akira in the demon vs human war. 

TLDR: While Ryo’s morals are still questionable at times in the original manga, (Hell, there’s a part in volume 4 where he questions it himself) it is obvious that he cares about Akira’s well being and will fight to protect him.

I managed to get my greedy hands on this and it’s great

I can’t read it but if the notes on this post are right there is indeed a ‘refrigerator’ reference lmao

The first section is gorgeous, it’s the Sabbath but set to “Saturday Night Zombies” by Yuming (Yumi Matsutoya) which came out in 1987. The end note says “1988.4,” which checks out because it only references the first OVA and the manga (including one instance of Shin.)
