P.P. Arnold photographed by Tony Gale in London, June 1967.
P.P. Arnold began her career as an Ikette, a backing vocalist for Ike & Tina Turner, in 1965. While The Ike & Tina Turner Revue were touring Britain with the Rolling Stones in 1966, Mick Jagger encouraged her to pursue a solo career. She stayed in London and signed to Immediate Records. She recorded songs written by label mates Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane of Small Faces. She released the first version of Cat Stevens’ song “The First Cut Is the Deepest” on her debut album The First Lady of Immediate (1967), which became a hit in the UK. She also had success with her version of “Angel of the Morning” from her second album Kafunta (1968). After the collapse of Immediate Records in the late 1960s, she released two singles on the Polydor label, produced by Barry Gibb. A planned album with Barry Gibb was never completed.
