Kim Namjoon is an amazing individual.
He is kind and strong and itâs astonishing how many people are sleeping on him.
He was born in Iilsan, South Korea, on September 12, 1994, and he is currently using the stage name RM under the very popular k-pop idol group, BTS. Â He is the leader of this group and the very reason it exists.
Kim Namjoon is the main song-writer of the group, while fellow member Min Yoongi, or Suga, produces, but I donât think many of the fans, called âARMYâ realize this. Â The Korean fans, or K-ARMY disrespect Kim Namjoon the most and do him the most dirty., which continuously blows my mind.
This man was the very first member of this group, the very reason their company, bighit, wanted to do a more hip-hop styled group, because most of the k-pop that was coming out in mid-2013 when they debut, was super pop like, just look at EXO. Â Kim Namjoon has been there since the very beginning, with Suga. Â He was there before BTS had the members it does currently, he was there when the lineup was completely different, when Supreme Boi was a member. Â But it fell out. Â The original lineup was dropped and for a moment, BTS was hopeless. Â Then Jin, a boy who wanted away from his fatherâs name, who went to acting school, was recruited. Â And Jimin, the boy who majored in dance. Â And V, the farm boy who almost spent his life with his grandma. Â And Jungkook, the youngest who could have signed under many other, many bigger labels.
Jungkook, everyoneâs favorite maknae, signed under bighit because he looked up to Kim Namjoon so much, even though the company was close to bankrupt.
And then they dropped their first album. 2 Cool 4 Skool. Â Thatâs the number two, cool, the number 4, s-k-o-o-l. Â The first music video they ever dropped was for No More Dream. Â The risky part about this, is that itâs one, a hip-hop song, two, very obviously low budget, and three, about how society oppresses itâs youth and steals itâs dreams, forcing them into mediocrity despite telling them they can have anything they work for.
Thatâs pretty heavy stuff for a group with a really small following.
And though they have their share of love songs and songs about girls in general, Miss Right, I Need U, War of Hormone, they still sing and rap about these major issues that really need to be taken care of.
Idol, their most recent song, is about accepting your identity and being who you are, no matter what anyone else says, and their music video reflects that. Â Theyâre âtoo koreanâ or âk-pop idols are all fakeâ or âthere are a million members.â Â They comment on every one of these tings visually and shove it in your face. Â They hear what we say about them.
Anpanman, though a cute song about with a title of a man with bread for a face who gives pieces of it to people in need, it about using what you have to make a difference, and even if youâre no superhero, you can try your hardest with what you have to make the world a better place.
The thing is⊠BTSâs main songwriter, Kim Namjoon, is so overlooked, it pains me.  In k-pop albums, there are things called photocards, and they are about playing card sized and theyâre photos of the members usually, and since Kim Namjoon is such an unpopular member, his cards are the easiest to get, even though itâs supposed to be ârandom.â
There are the least fans taking pictures of him professionally, there are ARMY who try to trade away any merch of him in lieu of one of the youngest three members. Â There are people who want him to leave the group because heâs apparently âuglyâ and they donât want âan eggâ leading their favorite group.
But he is the leader. Â When the group argues, he has everyone sit down and they talk about everything thatâs bothering them, because a group that big, with seven members, doesnât stay as close as brothers for over five years by pure luck. Â Thatâs hard work and dedication and great leadership.
This man, whoâs IQ is over 140, who taught himself English and knows how to speak three languages fluently, is disliked.
This man has been through so many hardships. Â His first group dropped, his second one almost dropped, his anxiety and fears telling him it isnât worth it, that HE isnât worth it.. he has a song where the opening line is, âI woke up this morning, and wished I was dead.â
Kim Namjoon is a man that deserves the world, and the world was listening to him alone yesterday. Â They were listening to him give a speech on behalf of UNICEF, an organization thatâs aiming to end violence for children and young adults
He talked about himself, about how heâs still terrified, how he knows BTS wonât be around forever and how, with their popularity, theyâll do everything they can to make the world a better place, especially with the millions upon millions of fans they have.
And most importantly, he talked about acceptance. Â Accepting yourself for who you are, loving yourself before you tried to love others, and speaking yourself, telling others who you are, not who you think they want you to be.
And nobody is talking about it.
Nobody online that Iâm friends with are talking about this speech he made at the UN conference, in a language heâs not native to, and theyâre not talking about his bravery. Â Theyâre not talking about him speaking against the dark parts about Korea nobody talks about, the racism and the homophobia.
The line he spoke that most stood out to me was this.
âNo matter who you are, where youâre from, your skin color, your GENDER IDENTITY, speak yourself.â
Kim Namjoon is a brave, beautiful man, and he wants us to just be true to ourselves.
