Luffy grew up with two brothers who, at first, hated him and kicked the shit out of him. Then, eventually, loved him and who expressed that love through kicking the shit out of him.
Luffy's grown up with a low level of violence as love his whole life.
His crew is the same, from very early on. Nami will beat on anyone (or at least any of the boys), and Zoro's been known to land a punch to the back of his head at every dumb remark he makes.
And Sanji... his kicks are INTENSE.
Luffy's lucky he's made of rubber.
and he laughs it all off-- because it's FUNNY. He knows his crew loves him, they're his CREW. He knows his brothers loved him, they're his BROTHERS. Luffy has always known violence as a form of love, although notably he rarely reflects that methodology onto others.
When Luffy meets Law the first time, Law watches as Luffy punches a Celestial Dragon in the face. That violence is, obviously, NOT a form of love.
When Luffy meets Law the second time, it's when Law is saving his life, doing impossible levels of knitting him back together.
Luffy doesn't remember a lot of that bit, or the bit right after, on Amazon Lily, when the grief is at its strongest.
But then, two years later, he sees Law again on Punk Hazard, and they form an alliance, and Luffy declares that Law is a good guy.
No one else agrees.
But when has Luffy ever cared about other peoples' opinions? Now certainly isn't the time to start. Law gave all those pirates new legs. He saved Luffy. He's good.
and then Law is travelling with them, aboard the Sunny.
And he's mean and grouchy and short tempered and, again, everyone is wary of him.
Luffy's not, of course, because that's just how Law is, but he's confused.
Because no matter how many times Law snaps or yells or threatens to slice people apart, he's never violent. He doesn't throw punches or kick or draw his sword.
Which does make Luffy wonder if he's done something wrong, that Law doesn't feel like he can be free with Luffy, to go after him when he says something stupid. Everyone else does, is it because he's the captain? But Law's captain too, and they're in an alliance, they're equal.
But he doesn't say anything on it-- and even in Dressrosa, when Law tries to tell him the alliance is over, Luffy knows he wouldn't attack him even if he could. And it's confusing. He couldn't count the amount of times Ace landed a punch on him just for waking him up wrong.
After all that is said and done, and they land on Zou, and Luffy meets the Heart Pirates in all their glory, all twenty of them, he doesn't know if he gets more confused or less.
The Heart Pirates LOVE their captain (as they should, Traffy is great!) and clearly would do anything for him, starting with those dorky poses they strike. And they yell at him for abandoning them, but they don't get violent with Law, and doesn't get violent with them. He sort of just... lets them yell at him and then talks over them.
It's weird.
This isn't a thought that keeps Luffy up at night so much as it's a thought that he returns to whenever he looks at Law, reclining as his crew tries to get him to talk about what happened, or whenever Luffy's getting literally kicked out of the kitchen by Sanji.
It's a fact that Luffy puzzles on even in Wano, as Law is passively letting Luffy ruin every plan and then announcing that he planned FOR Luffy to ruin every plan.
He doesn't hit Luffy for ruining his plan. He doesn't even elbow him in the side.
Before Luffy had seen Law with his own crew on Zou, he had thought that maybe Law didn't really like him. But after seeing Law interacting with his crew, he started to reevaluate. Law loves his crew, and although he threatens to use his Room on them (and maybe sometimes he does), that's not a violent thing. They can pop back together like Kin'emon did.
But Luffy wonders-- what does it mean to be close with someone without feeling the freedom to get physical with them?
He wonders this and doesn't have an answer, because that's never been his world.
And of course, what Luffy doesn't know, is that Law grew up with that violence. Had those formative years with Doflamingo, where he was taught to fight and lived with a family who was just as violent as Luffy's own. He was full of hatred and happily took it out on people.
And the only difference was Cora-- who at first was just as violent, to be fair, throwing him out a window and all that.
But Cora who saw him as someone that could be saved, who sacrificed everything from his mission to his life, to give Law freedom of a different kind— the freedom of gentleness. The freedom that comes from being able to live for yourself. The freedom that comes from being loved enough that the one who loves you gave it all up for you.
He gave Law everything he had, and he held him tight and told him it would all be okay.
And it wasn't, because Cora's gone, but Law took that love and internalized it, and from the very start the first thing he does is save Bepo from being hurt.
He gathers a crew little by little and does so by giving them second chances like he was given, and gives them safety— including physical safety. Because separating himself from Doflamingo and that hatred means also separating himself from that senseless violence that comes from growing up in organized crime.
Law's crew respects him because, despite his prickly exterior, he's stoically kind. He's using his fruit to help and to heal-- even when he gives those pirate hearts to the marines, did he kill them? Debatable.
Law has worked hard to excise that violence from his life, and Luffy can see that even when no one else on his crew seems to notice.
And Luffy doesn't know why-- doesn't understand it-- but god it makes him smile wide when he sees Law snap at someone and knows that he can trust that Law won't hurt.
It's like having a wild animal, capable of destruction, lay lazily at your feet.
Luffy wants that. It's an addicting feeling, to feel safe in that way.
He loves his crew and he loves his brothers and he's made of rubber-- they couldn't hurt him, wouldn't hurt him.
But the secret gentle kindness of Law is addicting.
Loosely inspired by the lawlu/lulaw fic “Broken Heart Syndrome” by Callunar on ao3! Law knee deep in denial about being friends with Luffy and the others, opposed by Luffy’s clear interest in him, is one of the funniest depictions of them tbh. Bonus points bc Zoro is a menace in this one for the good, good cause of teasing his friends. 😂😂😂
Sailing with the Straw Hats was NOT what Law had in mind. To think he had an advantage at sea with key members of the Straw Hat crew, but they were nothing like he had imagined.
Luffy, was he really the captain of the ship, he began to question. Yes, he'd known that the straw hat was special, but honestly, he is an imbecile of a pirate. His selfish acts create havoc wherever he goes, and his crew mates watch after him like their child. Speaking of the crew, they've grown to be more comfortable around him and even picked up on his nickname out of endearment.
They would bombard him with various questions about his vampiric ways. Such as if he was allergic to garlic or feared the sun, when clearly, he was okay standing underneath the blazing star. Some of them were still skeptical of him, afraid that he would bite them in their sleep or cut out their organs. That shortly faded as they adored his expertise in the medical field, sword fighting, and his helping hand when it came to Luffy.
The Heart Pirates thrived from the chaos and their captain pretended to despise it. Slowly, Law tolerated their acts, often being swooned by Chopper's cute face and Sanji's delectable onigiri. It felt nice, the family was growing. Still, Law is not ready to commit to such emotions. Luffy assures him; however, there is a lot of work to do.
A couple of weeks have passed since their departure as they continue their journey down the grand line. Law has mentioned his goal to take down Doflamingo and after hearing about his wretched rule, the Straw Hats complied to his request for help. They're on a course to Punk Hazard to take the scientist, Ceasar, as hostage. From there, they will let the emperor, Kaido, take care of the rest.
Punk Hazard is not far from their coordinates, they stop momentarily at a small island to restock on supplies. The pirates stretch and relax on the shore, missing the touch of the hot sand between their toes.
As Luffy and the rest of the carefree pirates venture into the island, Law orders the competent members to forge for food supplies.
As the vampire captain maintained a keen eye on things, Bepo barges out of the submarine and flaps his hands over the railing of the deck. "Captain! Check this out, we spotted something on the radar!"
Everyone becomes alert at his urgent request.
Law shambles himself to Bepo and again to land onto the navigation room. Yes, there is a vessel nearby, but there is no telling what it could be. The marines, pirates, or it could simply be a passenger ship. Unlike his mate, he is not willing to find out.
"We should get going," he tells Bepo. The polar bear nods in agreement.
The vampire walked back to the deck and voiced, "It is best we depart. There is an unknown ship coming our way."
"Aw, do we really have to? I was having fun messing around with this weird looking thing," Luffy whined, as he held a goat-turtle hybrid.
"I think Law is right, we have no idea who it could be," Jinbe said.
Even though Law is considered a co-captain, the Straw Hat's do not take direct orders from him (same goes for the Heart Pirates). The Straw Hats wait for Luffy's orders, clearly hesitant to oblige.
"Mmmm, fine."
With that, they quickly finish loading the ships and depart from the small island. Safe to say that the goat-turtle was more than happy to see the Straw Hat captain leave.
Bepo continues to monitor the radar as they head northwest.
Eventually, the ship is out the radar's zone.
"Captain, it’s out of view."
"Good, we can travel at ease now."
He shambles out of the navigation room and tells the Straw Hats about the cease of danger. Luffy was still a bit upset about the early departure, but his mate made up for it with a simple kiss on the cheek. Leaving the human as happy as he could be.

Noon hit around shortly after. All the pirates are on the decks as they wait for Sanji's cooking. The cook's work has increased dramatically as he now provided meals for all twenty-one members of the Heart Pirates. Though, he does not mind, it only means that his cooking will appetize more bellies.
The pirates are mixed in between the Polar Tang and Sunny as they socialized within their friend groups. Bepo caught up with Chopper, leaving the radar unattended. Little do know about a new report about an unknown object coming their way. As the food is being served, along with the booze, no one remembers to keep an eye for the radar.
After the round of laughter back on the Sunny, Usopp opened his eyes and checks the ocean view. Not too far from the horizon, a black dot catches his attention. He rubs his eyes, making sure he wasn't seeing things, and the black dot appeared larger now. The snipper puts on his goggles and takes another look at it.
"Um, guys. I think something is heading our way."
Law takes note of this and sends Bepo to check the radar. The mink does so immediately and runs down to the navigation system of the Polar Tang. Indeed, Usopp is right, there is something heading their way. The dot is tiny, usually ships have a larger image. He wonders if they should be worried, could it be rubbish? Despite his thoughts, he runs back up and reports his findings.
"Captain, the radar indicates a small object heading north bound at a steady pace. It appears too small to be a ship."
The pirates watched as the black dot began to take shape. As it approached, the first thing they noticed was the large crucifix on the small craft. The boat took shape of a coffin, colored all black, and had a singular seat. Zoro recognized it immediately; he smirks in excitement.
"Why are you smiling? Is there something we don't know?" Nami asked.
"You'll see."
The object propelling towards them was not no ordinary ship. The large cross could only mean one thing, the ship of Dracule Mihawk.
"What is he doing here? Should we panic captain?" Penguin jittered, holding onto Shachi.
Law has obviously heard about the warlord, the strongest swordsman in the world and a vampire coming from a strong bloodline. He has not acquainted with other vampires as they are solitary beings. Who knows what this encounter could lead to.
Luffy approached Zoro, who is just as stoked to meet up with the world-famous swordsman. "Are you going to have a rematch?" he asks, placing his hand on his back.
"I am nowhere near his level, but it wouldn't hurt to put my skills to the test," he replies, his muscles tensing from the thrill and anxiety.
The small craft was finally at view, Dracule Mihawk opened his eyes to face the curious pirates above. "My, it is a pleasure to encounter you Roronoa and you too, Straw Hat Luffy."
Luffy grins at his name. "Long time no see Mihawk!" He waves at the man.
"Ah, we do we have here? A pirate reunion?" His eyes trail to Jinbe and Law, squinting more so at the other vampire. "Two ex-warloads I see, how interesting."
Law felt himself tense from Mihawk's eyes. Two tigers in proximity are never a good thing.
"You there in the leopard hat, what business do you with Straw Hat Luffy? I am curious, we vampire don't assimilate with a huge crowd."
Before Law could answer, Luffy beat him to it. "Didn't you hear, we're mates!" he exclaims with pride, stretching his arms to the Polar Tang to grab Law. He then reels him in and holds him close, smiling at the fact.
"Mates?"— Mihawk smirks— "I see then."
The older vampire stands up from his seat and whips out Yoru.
Everyone is taken by surprise at the sudden movement. Zoro wastes no time in pulling out his swords to prepare for an attack.
“Not you Roronoa, you are not ready.”
Zoro growls and hesitantly puts his blades away.
“You.” He points at Law. “I would like to test your strength.”
Law grabs for Kikoku, but Mihawk stops him. “This is not a sword fight, but a battle of physical strength. Vampire to vampire,” he states, withdrawing his sword.
Everyone is stunned at the declaration.
A vampire fight? This is unheard of, but intriguing indeed. Zoro, who was sour, is stoked to watch a duel between vampires.
“Mihawk fighting without his sword? Oh, this is new.”
Law frowns at the request.
“Who said I want to fight you?” he scoffs.
“My, are you afraid to lose in front of your mate?” Mihawk shrugs. “I understand if you’re not man enough to take me.”
Law turns to Luffy who is staring at him. He looks riled up to see the fight. The pressure is on more than ever, he cannot make a fool out of himself. Not in front him.
“Tsk, looks like I have no choice,” he grins, putting on a brave mask for show. Deep down, he knows there is a huge gap in power, there is no way he is winning. He wonders what the older vampire plans.
Law hands Kikoku to Luffy. "Watch it for me, Mugi." The Straw Hat gladly takes the sword, it is the first time he holds it.
"Wow, it's huge," he says, examining the blade.
"Careful Luffy, that's a cured sword," Zoro adds.
"That makes it even cooler."
The two vampires are now in a standoff, no eye contact is broken. Law wonders where the fight will take place. The ocean is no answer, and the decks are occupied, but before who could continue to think, Mihawk managed to appear right in front him.
Seconds felt like milliseconds, he could see what true bloodlust eyes looked like. Mihawk's gaze burned right through his soul, he never felt anything so surreal. All he could do was painfully watch the punch incoming right at his face. He is thrown back, damaging the Sunny's wall. It's been a while since he felt such power, oh did it rile him up.
Law recovered, sitting up, as he wiped the blood dripping from his nose. He chuckled and opened his eyes to crimson color. He grinned, displaying his large fangs. "You shouldn't have done that." Wiping the dust off his sleeves, he launches himself at Mihawk and tries to land a hit, but the older vampire blocks it.
“Oh, is that all? Pitiful.” Mihawk taunts.
Angered by this, Law snarled at him and tried to bite his neck with his enlarged fangs. This failed of course as Mihawk sent him back flying once more.
"Damn, can I even land a hit?"
He could his devil fruit powers, but that wouldn't be fair game. After all, this fight is a test of their vampiric powers.
"You can do this captain! We believe in you!" Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin screamed in unision.
Law could see Luffy through the corner of his eyes, he couldn't tell what he was thinking by that poker face.
Mihawk tried to land another blow, but Law managed to dodge it in time. "Eyes on the enemy."
They both jumped in the air as they battled it out. Law would send a kick to throw him off guard and Mihawk would dodge it like it was nothing. Every swing he threw at him failed, he’s quick like the wind. Frustrated, his attacks become sloppy and less effective.
"What's the matter Trafalgar? Don't tell me you're tired already?"
Mihawk bites his shoulder, digging his canines deep through his flesh. "Argh," Law groans in pain.
"My, I wonder how your little mate will squirm once I get a taste of him," he snickers.
This was the last straw for Law. He upper cuts Mihawk and kicks him in the abdomen, sending him back down. The older vampire hits the deck of the Sunny and laughs. This is what he was waiting for, the deranged nature of the younger one. He could see it in his eyes, rabid jealousy.
"Well, I guess it's time to end this." As Law plummets down to rip his throat open, Mihawk simply rolls to the side and lets him take the impact of the fall. Law weakly gets up and viscously snarls at him, swiping his hands like a feral beast. "The fight is over." Mihawk proceeds to give his final attack and gives a powerful blow onto his abdomen, knocking the wind out of him.
Law’s vampiric state vanishes as he falls to the ground.
"Captain!" The Heart Pirates yell out.
Luffy drops Kikoku by accident as he ran over to his fallen mate. “Torao! Are you okay?” he says, shaking his limp body.
Law opens his eyes as he grunts in pain. “I think so,” he shakily says.
Mihawk stands over them. “You fought well, Trafalgar. I hope to fight you again at your full potential.”
“Thanks, damn. . . you really did some damage there.”
The older vampire expands his arm out, helping Law get up.
“May I speak to in private, Trafalgar.”
The younger vampire nods. Mihawk puts his arm over his shoulder and takes him to another part of the Sunny. Everyone watches, wondering what they could be whispering about.
“I know your desires and wants, I too have experience it and may I say you two make a lovely couple,”— he whispers in his ear— “bite gently and slowly around the jugular, making sure to tighten your hands around his neck, slowly suffocating him to the brink of death. Trust me, humans love it.” He winks.
Law’s face turns crimson red. Flustered, he did not bat an eye.
“That is all everyone, tootles!”
He jumps to his coffin boat and takes one last look at Zoro. “Till then Roronoa, I’ll be waiting.”
Zoro grins in delight. “Oh, you’re on.”
With that, he sailed away.
“So what did he say?” Luffy asked, handing him his sword.
Law, still flustered, cleared his throat and faced his mate. “You’ll find out tonight.”

Elsewhere.
"Say Garp, have you heard about your grandson's mate?"
"Mate?! Don't make me laugh Hawk Eyes," Garp cackles.
"Oh, it is true alright."
"Whatever do you mean? You can't be serious. Mates indicate that he-" Garp paused and thinks, the only people who use the word ‘mate’ are vampires. “Don’t tell me he messed with your kind?!”
The line went silent.
"Hello? Are you there? Answer me!"
"Oh dear, I beileve I said too much. Well, I must go, I have other things to attend to."
The line ends.
"Hello? Mihawk?! Explain yourself!''
As Garp continued his temper tantrum on the other side of the world, Mihawk sailed at peace. Reminiscing the times he had with his own straw hat fling. Maybe it's time for another visit.
Dragon makes it back home after a long mission and now his kid is stretchy.

I offer you another poorly executed, stupid idea X'D
(I don't know what terms they'd use for each other. Someone who does know/ has some thoughts on it, enlighten me please *lol* But it's not like it really matters, since I'm making their dynamic up anyway...!)
