After staying at the Travelodge in Holbrook, Arizona, we went to explore the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert. We stopped by the visitor center and gift shop before heading on the Giant Logs Trail.
This picture is of the Mather Plaque, or the 2nd stop in the Giant Logs Trail, honoring Stephen T. Mather, the founder of the National Park Service. Mr. Freddy Traveler pictured here as well.
The Giant Logs Trail has 11 stops, explaining the history of the land layout and how petrified wood is made.

Here is another panorama view from the Giant Logs Trail.
According to the informational brochure by the National Park Service, the Petrified Forest became a monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. We spent about 4 hours driving around to different viewing points, absorbing the view, and taking pictures in this national park. The trail was relaxing to walk and the views were fantastic. We would have stayed for more time if the park didn’t have a closing time. We would definitely come back to take a second look and step inside the Painted Desert Inn Museum.

On the Road – Day 3 – The Big Texan
For day 3, we decided to stay at the Big Texan Hotel. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. We arrived in the early hours of the night so they even deducted $10 from our total. It was easy to find (can’t miss the big cow!)
We enjoyed this message posted on the inside of our room door. Thank you to the Big Texan for a good night’s stay!
We also ate at their restaurant, and the ribeye and…

Visit to the Lincoln Home in Springfield, Illinois is well worth your time!! We saw at least 3 school groups here, but it still did not feel crowded. The National Park’s Annual Pass works here, too!

On the Road – Day 2 Monterey Non-Smokers Hotel
So we decided to stay in Albuquerque, NM instead. We are going to stay in Monterey Motel. We are using Expedia to book our room. They offer a two queen room for $85.
When we arrived at 1am, we unfortunately had to wait about 45 minutes for our room to be ready; however, the staff was very apologetic, friendly, and accommodating. They offered us water and coke while we waited. To compensate, they…
