What it takes to be Great Blog Assignment
The central focus of Geoffrey Colvin’s article “What it takes to be great” published in October 19,2006 by fortune magazine is research on the gift on being great,as well as what it takes to be great. Colvin notes that researchers were first curious to why certain people able to go on improving and that lead them to study athletes and business men. While many believe that greatness is a peer talent, the researchers and Colvin conclude that greatness happens through deliberate practice. According to Colvin deliberate practice involves Consistency, Ambition, and Hard work. To support this argument Colvin shares that “jerry rice passed up by 15 teams because they considered him to slow -practiced so hard that other players would get sick of trying to keep up with him”(pg.30). Ultimately, Colvin presents his information to his readers, so that they can understand that with deliberate practice you can become great, because we have to truly push ourselves to get away from being average.
Colvin presents research suggesting that deliberate practice is essential to becoming great. This research does apply to me because I have a natural talent for sports, but as i get to the next level then i cant rely on my natural talents to help me succeed and get to were i wanna go. While Colvin says”Talent is irrelevant”, although that statement is true it also has some fault to it. For example all my life i have relied on my talents to carry me in football throughout high school. But in college i’m smaller then everyone and have to work 2 times harder to show people i belong. I believe if you have a passion for something then your gonna work harder for it to make a statement.
Although she doesn't say so directly, Dweck would likely approve of my calendar because my calendar reflects my effort towards everything that i have to do. My calendar reflects what i will do for my school, study, practice, and down time. For example deck states “Einstein wasn't Einstein until he put in years of focused hard work.” It shows that if i remain loyal to my plan of my calendar then i to can stay focused and continue to work hard at every aspect of my day and time. she also says that “your belief controls your reaction and outcomes to setbacks.”And i believe this to be true because when i would feel stuff to be to hard i would quit or stop trying, but throughout the course of my years i have to learned to change my attitude in times like that and the outcome was way different and positive than negative.
