“Well, Elle is grown up.  So Elle only has grown up teeth!”

“So… when Jude gets old like you, he won’t look like you either?”

“If I were you, I wouldn’t be too eager to lose all my baby teeth. The faster you grow up, the faster you’ll get older and those grown up teeth will fall out. Then you’ll need dentures.”

“Old age progression isn’t quite as genetically predictable. But given his current appearances...I would imagine he would still look a bit more similar to his mother, they have a similar face shape.”

“Elle doesn’t have baby teeth.  Elle’s already 10!”

“I want to ask about Jude.  You’re his papa, right?”

“How come Jude doesn’t look anything like you?”

“Some children will have a lingering baby tooth until eleven, even twelve in some rare cases.”

“But yes, I am Jude’s father; Jude may seem to take after his mother in appearances more, but if you notice, we do have the same eye color.”

“That sounds complicated and bossy over introductions.”

“And I’m here because Alvin is being all weird and touchy with Jude over at the docks and I didn’t want to get in the way.”

“But… there was also a question I wanted to ask.”

“Courtesy and manners are complicated at first.”

*...’all weird’...’and touchy’........* “I see.”

“Well, what’s your question? Is it about your baby teeth falling out? Or maybe your growth rate?”

Hey doc! Aren't you being too stern with a little girl like Elle-chan?

“Structure and some seriousness is important for growing children. It can’t be fun and games all the time.”

“Well– I guess.”

“Oh, but Baran calls him Jude-kun.”

“Close peers or colleagues will usually not include someone’s title when addressing them.”

“You neglected to mention what brings you here today.”

“Really…?”

“Jude’s a doctor too, right?  Why does he introduce himself as Jude Mathis then?”

“Because Jude doesn’t own his own clinic.”

“I’m sure some of Jude’s colleagues refer to him as Dr. Mathis.”

“Papa says when you introduce yourself, you do it with your name.  Why would you give Elle your job title?”

“That’s true for ordinary people, but doctors are an exception to that. We are always addressed as Dr.”

“Oh! You remember Elle!”

*folds arms and looks entirely unamused* “And Doctor is not your name.  You can’t trick Elle.”

“I do remember. I’ve heard quite a bit about you since you were last in Lurondo.”

*is quiet for a moment at her suddenly stubborn response* “Dr. refers to my job title.”

“Hello!”

*and intently peers at the good doctor* “………………………”

“Are you Jude’s dad?”

*meets her gaze evenly* “Good day.”

“Yes, I’m Dr. Mathis. Is Jude with you, Elle?”

“...Jude’s mother would never agree to threatening that.”

*slides open the Mathis Clinic's door and calls out* "Excuuuuuuuuuuuuse meeeeee!"

*glances up from his paperwork and wanders over to the door of his office to peer out into the clinic hallway*

*...then looks down at the young visitor* “Can I help you?”

*it’s not as if he could successfully keep Baran’s involvement a secret. One way or another, the truth would have come out*

“Bene–?!” *though that particular accusation isn’t one he was prepared for. In fact, the thought of taking advantage of such benefit hadn’t crossed his mind at all, which is why he’s completely and utterly shocked*

“That isn’t why I finally proposed to Jude! I just–”

*and.. isn’t that hard to admit to the older ex-noble* “I just… I want us to stay together and have our own family in the long run.”

*might be enjoying seeing Alvin squirm like this...just a little*

“I suppose such a spastic and hysterical response should be a sign of honesty. Certainly a departure from your usual attitude.”

“Let me hear you repeat that...just on your knees this time.”

[uses-both-hands]

“I…” *won’t, can’t, say anything about Jude dragging him along since he’d taken this long to man up and come—on his own—to the island and ask belated permission* “Baran helped put things into perspective and pointed out how cowardly I was acting over this.”

“And.. I know it’s quite late to do that, but I wanted to ask both of your approval for our relationship and future union. I know that’s important to Jude.”

“What a polite way to explain how Baran prompted you.” *crosses his arms and looks toward the paperwork on his desk* 

“And what prompted you to decide to reveal things and actually make it legal? I find it hard to believe that you’re interested in anything other than reaping legal benefits.”

*he…can’t deny that his excuses then were really flimsy and transparent, much as he’d like to try and protest it. And he’s got absolutely nothing to say about the wedding dress thing because he agrees*

*besides, there’s more important things for him to speak address, given the breach of manner and courtesy from one ex-noble to another ex-noble* “…I’m sorry I didn’t come to properly ask you and your wife for Jude’s hand before making the proposal to him. And… I’m sorry that you will be denied any blood-related grandchildren.”

*crosses his arms and listens* 

“Given how long it’s taken you to come forward, I’m somewhat surprised you even bothered showing up without Jude dragging you along. Though neither of you brought it up with us before deciding to go ahead.”

“Do you have anything else to say for yourself?”

[uses-both-hands]

“Oh…” *honestly thought they were a bit more.. discreet than that, but then, he doesn’t know how thin the walls are in the clinic*

*as for the dress, well…* “That was definitely a misunderstanding! I do not want a wedding dress!”

“But there…” *how did he try to phrase that on the ship again?* “…there is something else I need to apologize for.”

“Feeble lies about it just made things more suspicious.”

“But good, you’re probably the last person in the world who I would want to see wearing a wedding dress.”

“Do continue, you have plenty more to apologize for. It seems as though you’ve waited until the last possible moment to do this, if Baran’s message is any indication of your plans.”

*suddenly wonders if that was why he got locked out of the Mathis Clinic during that last visit and tries his hardest not to gulp at least not audibly, and ignores the issue of his cousin’s text message for now* “You’d… already known? That Jude and I are in a relationship?”

“Well, thumping around the moment the bedroom door was closed would leave anyone with their suspicions. Not that I appreciate how long it took you to actually admit anything”

“But what was this dress business?”

[uses-both-hands]

*follows after the doctor into his office and… for all that he came to Lurondo, resolute to talk to his partner’s parents, stands awkwardly when his senior sits in waiting*

"I…" *even if he mentally practised his apologies since the harbour in Elempios, it’s not coming out the way he wants it to* "…I…’m sorry… I wasn’t entirely truthful the last time I came here with Jude, sir. And it was very rude of me to do that under your very roof."

*drums fingers against his desk while listening to the explanation...but just on the desk, not near any scalpels!* 

“Well, you weren’t exactly subtle with your little ruse. I still have questions about your cousin’s message...which is evidently what prompted you to finally show up here."
