Jake wip so i can ramble abt him..
The thing with jake that i can relate to so much is the feeling of wanting to be loved even if you dont love the person. Multiple times i have found myself in a one sided relationships where I’m only with the person because i want to be loved, it doesn’t matter who. I feel like this is the approach that Jake takes to his relationships, if a little more nuanced.
Ok so I was thinking about when brain ghost dirk becomes real for a bit and calls jake his boyfriend. Meaning jake viewed their relationship as still dating, Even though jake has made it clear he doesnt love dirk, and they’ve broken up. Jake still seems like he wants to have a relationship. Why? Probably because Jake is a pathetic loser and needs someone to always be there for him. (this is not a diss i love jake).
When brain ghost dirk saves Jake, it seem like its only because Jake wants someone to take care of things for him. Maybe that is what being romantically involved means to him.
I feel like jake just wants to love someone back since that means having the security that he needs. Thats a reason why at the end of the comic hes so distraught about how he wants to be alone. He wants to be independent but he’s so used to needing someone to count on. Its probably in part that hes just used to being lusted after and thats probably tied to his self worth and expectations of himself. but theres also the fact that he wants to have a person to take care of things for him. Someone to guide him if you will. Jake is a very passive person and often needs someone to push him or guide him. Ex: aranea pushing out his hope powers, dirk getting hurt for jake to release his hope powers at caliborn, needing lil Hal to pursuade him into kissing dirks decapitated head, etc. Jake is so used to having these outside forces dictate him that realizing that all he wants is to be alone terrifies him.
Hes constantly being pined after but can never reciprocate in full even though he goes along with it (especially with dirk) and that can eat away at someone. The fact that he ends up with dirk again at the end of the comic before the epilogues shows he hasn’t quite grown. He falls back into the secure net that he’s used to even if he isn’t truly happy.
Youknow when dirk highjacks jakes mind in the epilogues to be completely devoted to him, yes thats fucked up, but in some twisted way its dirk giving jake what hes always wanted. The ability to love. whats more fucked up is dirk leaving after that. Almost as a “ive had to pine for you my entire life now uno reverse card” idk i love them what can i say. :,)
