Wynonna Earp: Vengeance was a big winner at the 2025 Canadian Screen Awards! Amongst the seven record trophies, Trevor Smith and his Albertan art department won Best Production Design or Art Direction, Fiction for their efforts.
Production Designer Trevor Smith, Art Director Cathy Cowan, and Set Decorator Amber Humphries were all nominated for a 2024 Emmy Award for their team's collected efforts on the 5th instalment of Fargo 5. What an honour to be amongst such cultural high marks as The Crown, The Gentlemen, The Morning Show, and True Detective: Night Country. The experience was nothing short of magical.
Every designer owes their spotlight to their cinematographers. Fargo Year 5 was no exception. Masters of light, and compositional maestros, these storytellers take the bones of my worlds and breathe complete life into them. Dana Gonzales, Pete Konczal, Daryl Hartwell, Bella Gonzales, Claudine Sauve', & Craig Wrobleski all touched this wild monster of a series. My work is elevated through their individual lenses. This is a luscious image lift from the inspiring Pete Konczal -- a real cinephile, and lover of all things visual.

The art department for FX's Fargo, episode 502: "Trials & Tribulations", was nominated for an ADG Award! Trevor Smith, and select team members, joined the festivities to celebrate this amazing recognition, and the craft of production design and art direction. What a great weekend -- big thanks to Zach Dearborn for many of these image lifts ;)
Fargo season 5's story [begins] with Dorothy "Dot" Lyon (Temple). After a series of unexpected events gets her in trouble with the authorities, Dorothy is suddenly thrown back into a life she thought she left behind. Dorothy, a seemingly Midwestern housewife, is the person that North Dakota Sheriff Roy Tillman (Hamm) has been searching for. A rancher, preacher, and constitutional lawman, Tillman believes he's above the law.
Tillman has Gator (Keery), his loyal but feckless son at his side. Gator is desperate to prove himself to his father. However, since Tillman can't rely on his son, he calls on the help of Ole Munch, described in the Fargo season 5 synopsis as a "shadowy drifter of mysterious origin." As her darkest secrets begin to unravel, Dorothy tries to protect her family from her past, but her loving and well-meaning husband (Rysdahl) keeps running to his mother, Lorraine Lyon (Leigh). Lorraine is the CEO of the largest debt collection agency in the country, and she's not too fond of Dorothy.
Dorothy's strange actions also catch the attention of Minnesota Police Deputy Indira Olmstead (Moorjani) and North Dakota Deputy Witt Farr (Morris), while Lorraine turns to her in-house counsel and adviser Danish Graves (Foley) to help her daughter-in-law. Fargo season 5, produced by its showrunner, writer, and director Hawley, looks to rely on a talented ensemble to weave another complicated tale about crime and family.

Massive shout out to Amanda Nicholson, Assistant Art Director and Set Designer that masterfully has the ability to unpack my terrible sketches and broken thoughts and repackage them as gorgeous realistic sets. Schools, houses, raves, diners, and endless middle class housing -- the team built a beautifully bland suburban landscape of pain and joy for the young cast to shine in. “Tegan and Sara's High School is pure nostalgia — but not the rose-tinted kind. Production Designing HIGHSCHOOL, for the talented Clea Duvall, Laura Kittrell, and DP Carolina Costa, was a refreshing dive into nineties suburban malaise --- and Calgary playing ITSELF! The whole team had a blast reproducing gig posters, invading record stores, taking over Crescent Heights High (where Tegan & Sara went to school), and generally stewing in a grungy stoned teen haze of feelings. EXCLAIM! magazine called it “impeccably drab” --and that makes me very happy. Mission accomplished ;) “It’s a heartfelt, eventually rather touching portrait of sisterhood – the actual and broader kinds – and of the power of friendship, the vexed business of negotiating the complexities of a queer adolescence, finding yourself, and the joys of uncovering a voice and a talent you can make your own.“ Lucy Manga, The Guardian. We won a Canadian Screen Award in 2022 for Wynonna Earp’s Season 4 “Hell Raisin’ Good Time”! The show’s final season went on a tear, winning 5 awards -- including the prestigious Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award. Set Decorator Amber Humphries, Costume Designer Jennifer Haffenden, and the creative whole team was a huge contributor to this Halloween-themed drugged out shredder. The Glory Hole received a major makeover, pitch forks were pitched, and many many poor pumpkins were harmed in the filming of this episode. 2021 was the year I was fortunate enough to develop a whole new show & visual universe from the ground floor: Joe Pickett. Joe (played by Michael Dorman) is a fictional Wyoming game warden from the best selling mind of novelist CJ Box. The TV series, brought to Alberta by Spectrum, Charter, & Paramount, is a taut and twisting tale of a good man forever getting his ethical nose into the wrong corrupt places throughout the mysterious small town of Saddlestring, WY. Shot in Calgary, High River, Millarville, around Jumpingpound Creek, on Three Point Creek, & the majestic Elbow River valley (you’ll see a trout theme), I was lucky to collaborate with the show running Dowdle Brothers (John & Drew) to build this new dramatic & wild arena, right from the ground up — factoring in every beam of sunlight, weasel hole, & gun shot we needed. Standing knee-deep in February snow, we faithfully plotted out the property to best settle into the land, nearby creek bed, & showcase its humble unadorned naturalism — as much an idea from the mind of Marybeth as an actual location. The Pickett property was the cornerstone to the series, their fortress from the wilderness, source of Joe’s pride/modest dreams, & family’s fresh unstable roots. Our amazing team of designers & scenic craftsfolk battled the wintery elements, & always time/schedule, to unveil a sleepy verdant property to stage the season’s narrative needs & quiet beauty. Matching location to stage, & praying the readership would imagine the same house my brain did— it was another wondrous & terrifying “movie magic” moment of storytelling and dogged interpretation.

Land, the Robin Wright picture I designed for Focus Features, Big Beach Films, and Flashlight Films, is making its 2021 premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie will be released quickly thereafter on February 12th. Here’s a peek at some of the incredible work we did on the mountain for a key piece of the story. Land, the feature film by Robin Wright, is in post-production. I was lucky enough to get to work with the whole visionary team in 2019: the extraordinary Robin Wright (also starring), DOP Bobby Bukowski, Big Beach, Flashlight Films, and the support of Focus Features. It was a wild multi-seasonal scramble courtesy of Albertan moody weather, but we survived, and even thrived in the hardship. My exemplary team was from across Canada and I met some new talents I’m happy to now call fresh filmic friends.
“Robin proved herself a tour de force taking in hand ‘House of Cards’ as a director as well as its lead actor,” said HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart. “She speaks very eloquently and passionately about wanting to tell the story of a woman’s journey through loss and pain, where only by giving herself to nature can she find a path to inner peace and redemption.”

Let Him Go, the Focus Features picture I designed, opens in theatres this November.
