A Doctor Leading The Fight Against Ebola Has Caught The Virus
In the past several months, Dr. Sheik Umar Khan has been a leader in the fight against the deadliest and largest Ebola outbreak in history.
Khan, 39, has treated over 100 Ebola patients in Sierra Leone. He’s a “national hero,” the country’s health minister said Tuesday.
Now the doctor has caught the deadly virus himself, Reuters reports. Khan is being treated at an isolation ward in Kailahun, run by Doctors Without Borders, the Sierra Leone government said in a statement.
"He is a very respected medical professional in the country," says Meredith Dyson, a health worker with Catholic Relief Services in Freetown, Liberia. “Everybody here in Sierra Leone is praying for him right now.”
Since the outbreak started in March, more than 1,000 people have been infected in three countries; 604 people have died, the World Health Organization said Saturday. Sierra Leone has reported 442 cases and 206 deaths.
Khan had worked for years treating people for another viral disease, called Lassa fever, which causes symptoms similar to Ebola. When cases of Ebola started to emerge in Sierra Leone, Khan immediately turned his attention to the outbreak and started treating patients at a hospital in Kenema.

Khan is a selfless hero. Sending him positive vibes and strength to recover and carry on with his work. I hope, along with his colleagues, that his infection does not deter others from fighting the Ebola virus outbreak.

I said I wouldn't believe it till I saw it, and today I saw it. The sun came out and it was almost ... kind of ... hot out. I never thought we would live to see the day. I literally (used properly) suspected that the ice caps were finally melting from all those Republicans driving hummers and that it was going to remain 50, windy, and bleary in Chicago for the rest of my life. ALAS!Â
Perhaps I should also mention that I, like most people, was forced to spend this beautiful day inside my office - feeling sorry for myself - were one would not be able to tell if it was midnight or noon, because there is no contact with the outside world. At three PM, I took my Diet Coke break (only my second today, FYI) outside, and I almost shriveled and died from the exposure. So that was exciting.
Upon arriving back at my lovely little slice of Lakeview Heaven, I was too zoned out from yet another day under florescent lighting to even walk all the way around Belmont Harbor (I could only force myself around the south (short) side). But then. As the sun was setting, I opened my front door to Soosh begging to go outside. And so I let her out onto the porch (she's banned from the back courtyard, but that's another story entirely), and she promptly rolled in the dirt and ate all the bugs she could find.
And it was glorious. And I was reminded why I have a pet. To remind me to stop, take a break, and let myself out onto Life's front porch so that I may roll in the dirt and eat bugs. Ah, the joys of pet ownership.

The man who wants to have his cake (get sex) and eat it too (be emotionally unavailable). Why is it that when Mindy (also semi-fictional, but 100% fabulous) involves herself in a one-sided relationship we recognize Danny as a douche bag and admonish his bad behavior BUT when we find ourselves in a similar situation, we focus on the cute shit that “Danny” does to keep us coming back for more?? Ugh, women. What the fuck, am I right?

This is one well-trained feline. Her name is Nermal and she’s clearly a SoCal lady. She loves sunny afternoons, pooping outside, and her carpet-covered stripper pole (ouch! think about it …) Her mom-beast, Jody Valdivia, would like to go on the record as saying that she, too works her ass off everyday for kitty kibbles for this gluttonous beast (but not on a stripper pole, just to clarify).

Back when I was young and stupid (read: 23) I thought it would be,"like, so funny and ironic," to create a blog about online dating. That of course stemmed from the demise of a pretty legit relationship followed by creating a precarious situation for myself, from which I was rescued by my bestie and her husband. Oops. Anyway, now I know everything (because it's been two years). For example, I know that if you leave a plastic cup less than half full of water anywhere in the house, the cat will purposely knock it over. Likewise, I know she sits on the credenza all day, despite being repeatedly told not to, because she occasionally pukes all over it. My feline overlord and her walnut brain. So predictable. When I convince her to do a trick I feel like Francis Underwood manipulating the ranks of Congress. Ah, to be a superior being.
And yet.
And  yet, she sleeps in my bed all day while I work my ass off at the hospital so I can buy her kitty kibbles, go back to school and eventually get a better job, so that I can feed her fancier kitty kibbles. Who's got this shit figured out, again? Perhaps she's Frank and I'm Walker? Oh god, I'm Walker, aren't I?
Anyway, my point is that online dating is not like, funny or ironic, I actually know that I know nothing about everything, and having a furry heathen beastie in your home can have its perks. So allow me to share my complete lack of wisdom. And cat pictures.
