the scene in trigun where knives kills the spider and says “you wanted to save the butterfly. the spider needs to eat, or it will die. there was no way to save them both.” lives with me so constantly. obviously it’s a metaphor but it’s such an effective microcosm of his motivation. he recognizes what happens in nature: things consume other things in order to live. in smaller situations, to save a smaller creature, you either kill the predator or leave it to die. he sees the reality here but can’t extrapolate it to larger ecosystems because the small ones are all he’s ever known. knives hasn’t studied the circle of life and the way that the butterflies feed the spiders who feed the worms who feed the plants who feed the butterflies again. he knows that the spider and the butterfly are in front of him and that something eventually needs to die to resolve the situation. vash wants the butterfly alive so knives kills the spider. he knows that humanity destroyed their planet through resource consumption and they’re turning to the use of plants to support them as they venture on. knives wants the plants alive so knives kills the humans. there is no sense of a larger cycle where both sustain the other. only the moment. only the way that plants are being Used. only the way they flutter, trapped in the web. only the power it would take to reach out his hand and eliminate the spider.
Trigun fans, what is the fandom consensus on how the humans discovered plants? They’re interdimensional beings so like did humans just managed to capture one in a special container??? For starters, All versions of Vash adore and respect you with the utmost certainty. Never in his 100+ years did he ever think someone out there would give their undivided attention to him, much less reciprocate any kind of romantic desire.
That being said, he also has so much turmoil and trauma that has followed him everywhere, so he’s a bit slow going in the first moments you are together.
He’s not going any further than initial words until you assure him that you want him 1000%. He doesn’t want to be the first one to shift the relationship until you give him the command. He’s got all the time in the world to wait if he has to. Only going as far as you’re comfortable with.
Vash adores you no matter what you look like! He’s not one to ever think any kind of body type is better than another. He’s happy that someone just wants to hold him close and let him enjoy the sentiment of physical and emotional closeness.
He won't push you into anything you don't feel 100% comfortable doing. Man can be kinky AF or vanilla AF if that's all you want to do.

He would still try to maintain his cheerful facade, but his eyes would often drift towards the person he likes, filled with a mix of longing and worry. He might become quieter, lost in thought, and his usual energetic demeanor would be slightly dampened. He would still go out of his way to help and protect, but there would be a noticeable tension in his actions, as if he's holding back his true emotions.
In the case of Vash from Trigun Maximum (Trimax), his jealousy would be more intense and visible. He would struggle more openly with his feelings, sometimes becoming uncharacteristically serious or even a bit irritable when he sees the person he likes with someone else. His protective nature would be heightened, and he might even confront the situation more directly, though still with his underlying kindness. His friends would see through his attempts to mask his jealousy, noticing the rare moments when his usually calm and composed exterior cracks, revealing the depth of his emotions.
