8-month "birthday"
P2D2 turned 8 months old on June 30. Again I can't believe it, but I think I'm starting to get used to the idea she's more than 6 months old. I'm a bit slow in accepting things sometimes. I'm in denial that denial doesn't work.
Anyway, here is what she is like at 8 months old:
Completely amused by anything her big sister does. She waves her arms, "jumps" up, squeals, smiles broadly, laughs, and/or kicks her feet when the Munchkin talks to her or plays peek-a-boo, or even if she just comes running across the room. P2D2 has similar reactions to our one dog, Mini (the harlequin lab), but less intense.
Took her first crawling "steps" on July 5, on the new striped outdoor blanket. It was such fun watching her slowly place each hand or knee before trying out the next one. She didn't have a strong "I did it" reaction, but she seemed pleased enough with herself. On July 8 (at the family cottage, on that same blanket) she sat herself back up from a crawling position, and today (July 9) she's a pro at it. She's already looking for ways to pull herself onto her knees, and I can see the wheels turning for getting to her feet. God help me!
Eats three meals per day of baby food, any combination of Stage 2 fruits, meats, and veggies and baby cereal. She currently is not fond of bananas and green beans. She LOVES fresh raspberries from our backyard (I break off a few sections of a berry I am eating and feed it to her). I plan to offer Stage 3 foods very soon! Still nursing.
She still loves to cling to me, and I believe she would be happy attached to me all day long if I let her down periodically to practice her crawling. She has been called "velcro baby."
She went to the family cottage for the first time and did very well. She wasn't fond of being in her car seat for the 2 1/2 hour drive, but with some entertaining big sister + a stop or two she did fine.
Very happy baby. Loves exploring, especially outside. She finds a leaf, holds it in the air, turns it different angles and observes, moves it to another "background" (e.g. was against the trees, now against the sky) and turns and observes some more. This can entertain her for a good long time.
Very interested in leaves on the trees, especially when the wind blows.
Took a ride in an umbrella stroller recently and stared in fascination at the ground going by. For nearly the whole walk. I'd love to know what's going through her head.
Loves to play peek-a-boo and takes turns babbling with us.
Babbles in up to 4-syllable strings, often "hi," "ah-ya-ah-dah," "mmmm," "bwah," and many others I can't think of at the moment.
I don't have official weight/height info, but I'm estimating she's about 17 pounds. She gained some "chunk" when she started eating a steady diet of solid food.
She is nearly impossible to diaper anymore! Flips from her back to her stomach the instant she is placed in that position, and fights like heck being put back. There have been times we've needed two people in order to avoid a big mess for the especially dirty diapers.
(Hoping not to jinx myself...) She generally only wakes 1x during the night these days, somewhere between 1:00 and 3:00 am. Goes to bed between 8:00 and 9:00 pm, up and running between 6:00 and 7:00 am. Morning nap is becoming more consistently 2 hours in length, but happens any time between 9:00 and 11:00 am, depending on wake-up time. Afternoon nap is still sketchy, but she generally will sleep for an hour or so around 3:00 or 4:00 pm. Improvement! (Trying to duck the inevitable jinx.)
Watches "Shaun the Sheep" with Daddy, and loves to hang out on our bed while he gets dressed in the morning. Overall becoming more attached to Daddy, and more accepting of letting Daddy do things she only wanted Mommy to do before.
Has three teeth on the bottom and four on the top. And she's taken to biting at times, when her tummy is bothering her or she needs to burp or some such. Ouch!
Will hold a blanket up over her face, wait for someone to say, "Where's (name)?", then put the blanket down and smile/laugh. Repeat 100x. Love it!!!!
Drops items purposefully to see them fall/ see what happens. Babies are so interested in physics, it makes me smile. :) At least until the thousandth time I have to pick up the toy. Or when it involves peas.
Blows, through flat lips (not yet rounding)
Pulls at each one of Keith's arm hairs while she sits cuddling on the couch with him. Or many at once. And he loves her so much he just winces and bears it. :) Love that too!
Puts up both arms and looks up at the sky.
Plays with her toes.
Her hair is now long enough that she gets "bed head."
Grabs for my scrunchy while it is still in my hair holding a ponytail. And pulls. And usually removes a handful of hair with the scrunchy.
Some thoughts about Independence Day
Independence Day. A day of picnics, fireworks, family and friends. A day off from work to enjoy summer. July 4th is all these things to me, but I also find myself reflecting on how much more the holiday means. This year, especially, I found myself wanting to celebrate this great country of ours, the United States of America. This morning I dragged our somewhat tattered flag from the closet and hung it up on the front porch. I thought about the freedoms we enjoy. I am not any sort of world-traveler, and Lord knows I'm horrible at geography. I have a narrow view of the world, and even this country, but I know enough to realize despite its imperfections, the USA is a great place to live. The foundation of this country, the Constitution, is amazingly well thought out and our founding fathers, diligent in their work, created a system unmatched anywhere else in the world. I thought about all that.
After putting up the flag I found myself wanting to listen to patriotic songs, and to expose the baby to them. I pulled Pandora up on the Roku and made a "God Bless the USA" station. It turned out to be more country music and less patriotic songs, but I got my fill regardless. And even in the country songs (which I actually enjoy, much to my husband's dismay) spoke to the core family values and belief in God that made this nation great. I long to belong to that kind of society. I'm afraid I missed it in many ways, both by my geographical location here in NY state, and by living in a time when these values are severely lacking.
As I listened to the music (and for much of the time cried at the lyrics, because that's what I do when a message affects me deeply) I wrote a quick list of what Independence Day means to me. And at the top of my list is my dad. I always think of Dad on patriotic days- Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day. He is strongly patriotic and not afraid to say so. Dad fought in Vietnam and continues 40+ years later to organize and attend reunions of his "Airforce buddies" from basic training. With pride he wears hats and t-shirts depicting the American flag, MIA/POW, and other signs of support for his country and the military. Dad probably doesn't realize, but he instilled a love for the United States of America in me, and I love him for that. And I love him for many other things, too, but that's another post. :) Thanks, Dad.

6-month "birthday"
This post is one week and one hour late in coming. P2D2 turned 6 months old last Monday, April 30. I had all intentions of writing this then, but I was stricken with a migraine and could not even get out of bed, let alone look at a computer screen. The world was too bright, too dizzy, and too painful. It happens. Then P2D2 caught a cold and much (all?) of my time was taken caring for and comforting her. And other things (aka: life) happened, and the post didn't happen. Although I did not write this on time I have been thinking about what I would say. P2D2 went down for her nap this morning and I saw my chance. I decided a shower sounded very nice, however, so I took one, then settled in with my laptop and my chai, getting all cozy on the couch. And then I heard coos and babbles coming from the baby monitor, indicating very clearly my writing time was over before it had begun. This is the way it goes much of the time. This is life with a young child. I have learned, because I've done this once before, to accept (most of the time) that things will get accomplished much later and at a much slower pace than one would think necessary. And it's (mostly) ok.
And then P2D2 fell asleep a second time this morning! So sometimes the unexpected works to my advantage, and here we are, one week and one hour later than I thought I'd be. So, let me get to the point before she's awake again!
I cannot believe she is 6 months old. That's half way to the average walking and talking age. Half way to a birthday party. Half way through infancy. It's half gone. This makes me extremely sentimental and even sad. I mostly try not to think about it, because truly every stage is awesome and so much fun. And I learned this by going through it once before, also. Hindsight perspective is a great blessing. I also know from this perspective that I will not remember as much about this stage as I think I will unless I write it down, so here goes!
My observations of P2D2 at 6 months old:
Her hair is long enough to overlap her ears a little, enough so it sticks out at a fun little angle. I usually move it back behind her ear, though. Compulsiveness, or I just like it better that way? I'm not sure.
Her eyes are what I am calling a blue hazel- sometimes they look very brown, but usually there is a blue-brown mix. Part of me wants that to be their ending color, but part of me wants them to turn brown since the Munchkin has blue eyes. Only time will tell, and I'll live with it just fine either way.
Her smiles are endless, and continue to rock my world. It is the most awesome experience to see her light up whenever (most times) she sees me. Open mouth baby grins rock!
Along those same lines, P2D2 continues to be a "mommy's girl," often discontented to be with someone else if I am around. Although it can make things difficult at times since she will often be fussy or outright crying while I'm getting other things done, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a wonderful feeling all the same. :)
She laughs more frequently now, often at the dogs (especially when they are outside), and at the Munchkin. She LOVES the Munchkin, and especially loves her when she's doing her funny antics.
P2D2 has acquired incredible ability to grab whatever it is she wants that is within her arms' reach. Hand-eye coordination has developed well, and she keeps us all on our toes to be sure dinner plates, place mats, remotes, water glasses, anything electronic, etc, is out of her reach.
Related to the above, she has discovered that just because something is removed from her vision it doesn't mean it no longer exists. She now looks all around for whatever it is. She also will often throw her body at it in an attempt to grab the object, so vigilance and awareness are imperative for whoever is holding her.
She is able to sit up well, with support for balance. I sit on the floor, one leg "Indian style," with her in the crook of my knee and she (mostly) can sit and play with things on the floor in front of her. She can also sit in the Bumbo, but insists on leaning over the side and therefore pops out and lands on her head. So we don't use it anymore. But don't worry, it's only a small fall of about 3 inches, so she was perfectly fine. And enjoyed being "free" on the floor. Ha!
When on the floor, she is able to roll to items she wants. And she's quick about it! Leaving her on a blanket in a room alone while I use the bathroom or do a little laundry is no longer an option. She's also perfecting her version of a Marine crawl, scooting slowly forward by pulling with her arms and pushing with her toes. Real crawling will be happening soon! She holds herself up with straight arms, and I often find her peeking over the lowered rail of her crib when I get her after naps. It's super cute, what with that previously mentioned open-mouth grin. And it's funny, because from the doorway it's like a floating baby head. Hmm- is that where the idea came from on "Phineas and Ferb?"
Despite my mentioning it nearly every day for at least the past month, we have yet to start real food with P2D2. I'm determined to make my own, and I haven't taken time yet to try it. I do, however, have the fresh green beans in the house, so maybe soon! She's definitely interested in what we're eating!
I love that she still grabs for and hugs my arm/hand when she is nursing. Those younger baby habits can stick around for a while longer as far as I'm concerned. :)
She also loves to play with my hair. Not as much in a grab-and-hold-on kind of way where I have to pry her little fingers off or plan to be missing a chunk. Now she takes one finger, or sometimes all of them splayed out, and puts it at the bottom of some dangling tendrils, then moves her arm backward so her finger pulls through the hair. It's almost tender, and seems purposeful for having the experience of truly feeling it. It's another thing I love about nursing time.
The cat is one of the most fascinating and exciting elements of our household as far as P2D2 is concerned. He sits next to me on the couch, and P2D2 grabs at him, sometimes in that fat-fingered-baby kind of way, simply trying to grab chunks of him and pull him toward herself. But other times she can be very gentle, open-handed, running her hand along his fur, basically petting him. And other times she goes for the eyes or ears. And then sometimes that little pointer finger hooks onto Oliver's harness, and that's the best, because then she can pull him toward her! And she's learned that one very well, and loves to do it over and over again, until I say enough and remove either the baby or the cat from the situation. But most amazing is the tolerance Oliver shows, especially considering his not-always-so-nice temperament from his younger years. The old man has mellowed. But I digress.
P2D2 continues to coo, but her raspberries of communication and sometimes displeasure have allowed her to develop a "b" sound. She babbles some, mostly still single syllables, not yet in strings. The ones I have heard are: ba, ga, da, and bwa (my favorite!). Sometimes there's a different vowel, but mostly it's the "uh" sound. I can't recall the other vowels right now, but may come back and add them in when I figure it out. (You'll have to excuse my speech-pathologist-y analysis, but this stuff is important to me.) I do love that she still coos- so stinkin' sweet to hear!
That's all I've got for now, and it's good because she's woken from her nap. I hope I get the "floating baby head" experience this time!
Spinach and Lettuce- Update #2
Well, this will be a short post. Due to the crazy yo-yo weather around here, where it's nearly 80 degrees one day and snowing 3 days later, there has been very little change in the spinach and lettuce plants. Some of the spinach now has tiny second leaves, and a few additional plants have popped up, but nothing major has happened. I have been negligent in covering them when the weather gets cold, and I'm sure that's not helping. Short of pulling out my cold frame (mini-greenhouse-like structure, in my case made from some boards and an old window) I think there will be no more progress until the weather gets consistently warm.
My youngest is a slingling!
A friend of mine came over yesterday to bring me a Slingling. I didn't know it was called a Slingling when she mentioned it to me a month or so ago, but that's what it is. She and her family were over to meet P2D2, and I mentioned wishing I had a Baby Bjorn. P2D2 loves her mommy (which of course makes me very very happy) and she likes to be held a whole lot (which of course is awesome, and is good for her development, but is also tiring and limits the time I have to get things done around the house). I've been told a Baby Bjorn carrier would be perfect for carrying her around for that close-contact bonding time and leave my hands free to also do other things. My (not very diligent) search for one to borrow or buy inexpensively have not yet turned up anything.
Alice (my friend) said she didn't have a Baby Bjorn, but she did have a carrying device much like one of those slings coordinated women use to strap their babies to themselves in a myriad of different positions. Much like those devices, but better because one didn't need to be an expert in origami and/or physics to make it work!
For those who don't know (and I didn't either before yesterday!) this is a Slingling (no, that's not me!):
It is a single piece of fabric, fashioned into a tube, that will hold a baby snuggly against the person wearing it. A Slingling comes in many different pattern and fabric choices. Mine is plain old black, which is a little boring but, hey, I'll take function over fashion any day!
Alice thought the hip carry would be best, at least to try first. She showed me how to swing P2D2 up to my shoulder, pull her legs through, and sit her butt into the right spot. It took a bit of maneuvering, and I think my daughter got a bit of a gymnastics lesson in the process, but once in she really seemed completely content.
After Alice left I decided to try it on my own so I could water the spinach and lettuce (which is still rather stunted, but that's a blog post for another day) and take some items to the composter. I got P2D2 settled without much difficulty and away we went. She still needs some support from me since she can't sit upright on her own yet, but overall the Slingling helped a lot to free up my hands and give my arms a much-needed break. Most of the carrying force is put on my right shoulder (the one opposite the hip where P2D2 sits), and I can see where this might be an issue for my back (I don't even carry a purse on one shoulder because it messes up my back). P2D2 was unbothered by any of this: she fell asleep within 5 minutes. :) I loved that! She hasn't slept on me in a few months, and it was so nice to have that experience again.
I realized, however, if I had wanted to put P2D2 down while she was sleeping it wouldn't happen. Since the Slingling is a tube, the only way to get her out is up and over. No baby I know would sleep through that process! With the more traditional slings one could potentially undo the ring (or whatever holds it) and lower the baby somewhere to sleep. Hmm. Wondering what happens if I need to pee!
So that is my very early review. I plan to try some of the other positions to see how those work out, and will update when I have done so. Oh, and apparently not only is the product called a Slingling, the babies carried in them are also known as slinglings! Who knew!
Spinach and Lettuce Update #1- still tiny
A couple of weeks ago I blogged about cleaning out some squares of the veggie garden and planting the cool weather crops- lettuce and spinach. The weather became very warm after that planting, some days close to 80 degrees, and I figured the plants would be well on their way by now. It seems I was wrong. Despite what I think was enough rain and sunshine, many of the seeds have not sprouted, and what has sprouted are still in the very beginning stages.
Here is a photo of the spinach; look closely! There are two plants in this photo.
The lettuce is doing about the same. Of 36 spinach seeds planted, about 8 are coming up. Same for the lettuce. The seeds are a season or two old, so maybe they have lost potency? I will wait a bit longer (although probably I shouldn't) before buying new and trying again.
5 Months Old
P2D2 turned 5 months old on Friday. I can hardly believe the time has gone so quickly! Things I notice about her at this age:
Holding onto her feet
Turning over from back to front just about every time I put her down on the floor
Blows raspberries, both for fun and when something is bothering her- she already has strong opinions!
Laughs (sometimes) when tickled.
Laughs (sometimes) when I make a big deal pretend sneeze.
Grins hugely when she sees Daddy or Munchkin.
Eyes are still blue, but appear to have moments of hazel or brown.
Has her two bottom teeth!
Loves to be in her saucer.
Loves to stand on my legs.
Enjoys being out-and-about.
Lights up when I sing the "Hello, how are you?" song.
Smiles when she hears "Ring Around the Rosy" and seems to anticipate the falling down part.
Likes to sit on Daddy's lap and look at Mommy, or sit on Mommy's lap and look at Daddy.
Has outgrown all 0-3 clothing except pants (although these are starting to get a bit short)
Continues to be inconsistent in how many hours she'll sleep at night between feedings (anywhere from 2-6 hours)
Goes to bed at about 8:30 pm and is fully awake around 7 am
Naps (usually) in the mornings for a couple of hours, but has yet to establish an afternoon nap.
Is very interested in what the rest of the family is eating.
Drool, drool, drool.
Can sit in two boppies stacked atop each other.
Bumbo sitting is more about leaning down to touch the floor.
When on tummy, can get her knees up and push forward sometimes, kinda like a plow.
Although she is physically capable of flipping from front to back, still yells for Mommy when she wants to be done on her tummy.
Entranced by screens: TV, Kindle, iPad, whatever; especially likes the song to "Ruby Gloom"
Very cute! This made me chuckle.
How our world should look like.
WHERE’S FORKS WASHINGTON!!!
I kid…
Hmmm the ever evolving map of my daughter’s mind… but yes I’d rather be there too :)
That's great! I'd rather be there, too. We'll have to make sure she travels to all of it. :)
This one's for my mom. It made me laugh.
This made me laugh out loud- literally!
