In 2016, Alice D’Amato tore her acl while training vault and had to go to all the way to Austria to get surgery because in Italy they wouldn’t operate on her, saying that she was too young to get such an invasive operation.
She had surgery which was successful and started her long road to recovery, while watching her teammates and her own twin sister move forward with new skills and upgrades while she fought to get back her old ones.
Later on, after she had managed to recover quite well, she broke a bone in her ankle which required to put her training on hold yet again.
In 2017, she made the UB final at EYOF. But because her D score wasn’t competitive enough, she got pulled out of it in favor of Elisa Iorio (who then won gold and dedicated it to her) who had a higher potential.
If before Euros started I had had to bet on one of the Italians to potentially win a medal, I would be lying if I said my pick would have been Alice D’Amato.
Yet today Alice earned the first senior international medal out of the 2003 Italian girls on bars, with the cleanest routine she could ever do and right when it counted. All of this after earning an amazing fourth place AA yesterday, after a great competition.
Every once in a while, things actually do work out in the end, and I hope she is just getting started 💜
