Hi, thanks so much for your response! I’m really struggling with drawing raptors -more specifically falcons and owls, and would love some tips of them! Thanks again so much!
np np thank you for the interest!
falcons:
this is mostly focus on the face, because to me if I don't get that right the whole thing gets thrown off. Falcons are agile and elegant, especially in the ankles, so think smooth, pointy and sharp shapes. Very delicate feet and talons compared to hawks and especially to eagles.
Unlike owls they can move their eyes a bit! But not their brows, as they have an exaggerated brow bone that helps keep the sun out of their eyes. The planes of the beak help give the overall thing more life by showing it's not just a flat, 2-D shape but besides the pronounced tomial tooth it's very similar to other raptors. Some just have very short beaks like tiny little kestrels.
owls:
I will admit that I struggle a lot with owls myself. I don't really have a lot of tips for them, it mostly goes down to breaking up shapes and patterns for their feathers rather than detailing out every one of them like I can do with other birds. The more camo and speckled a feather is the more confusing it is to figure out what's going on with it.
A tricky part of it is to get stripes on wings to line up correctly. Most of the time they're made up of spots only on half of the feather separated by the vane, so there's a bit of mental math going on to figure it out. I get the base of the wing drawn, detailed and shaded before going in on a new layer to outline where the stripes will be, and then it's a slow process of making it look cohesive and individual.
Their faces lie to you no matter what way they're looking. You only see a little bit of their beaks, so it's a matter of wrangling the facial disk to make it look both symmetrical and reasonable- things go wonky very easily.
For all of them it's a lot of observation, refs and videos are your friends. With their flat faces they look like a flying tube and it's easier for me to think of them like that.
hope this helps!

gave some weirdos some jobs. They're all connected cause they won't go too far from each other. Blazyk's need to be doing something always lead her to get into cartography and from there she's dragged both Stellar and Region into it- those two can go where she can't, both underwater and underground. Stellar enjoys studying weather and can easily get into storms most others struggle with. Region can phase through earth so he is able to study things without disturbing the ground itself. Split is a walking radio station due to his wild psychic abilities.
