It was a relief that Suzuya had remembered him at all. They’d seen each other in passing plenty of times, but he always figured that he was plain, vanilla, forgettable. But with the discovery that his name was underlined in his superior’s planner came an entirely new kind of anxiety.
“H-he’s looking forward to it?” He asked, nervousness seeping into his tone despite himself, “Oh no, it’s not much to look forward to! Really! I’m sure he’s just trying to remember my name or something. I’m…really not much of an exciting sparring partner.”
He probably sounded so insecure and pathetic, but he didn’t mind. At least the other man didn’t appear to be judging him. “But thank you so much for letting me know! You really are like Associate Special Class Suzuya’s right-hand man, huh?”
the small, sympathetic smile upon his narrow face persists — now, this was familiar territory. how many times had he told the associate special class something similar? how many times had he protested being brought along on missions, declared himself to be a burden, and yet... how many times had suzuya insisted? this, then, was the reason for such a useless guy being in such a prestigious squad.

i know for a fact that suzuya-san would disagree. if you
didn’t hold any value or interest to him, well... he wouldn’t
have agreed to spar with you, right? ❜
it was still a small miracle, in his mind, that his superior tolerated him, so the words are said with the utmost sincerity. at the mention of his perceived role, however, the investigator can do little more than chuckle nervously.
❛ am i? i-i suppose so... it’s the least i can do, really, after
all that he’s done for me... i’m fairly certain that the entire
suzuya squad feels the same way. suzuya-san is a very
brave and selfless man, so... i try my best to live up to his
standards, is all. ah... i’m rambling, aren’t i? ❜
