LAST DAY IN CHINA!

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience, or a better group of people to do this with. Over the last several weeks I have grown closer to my classmates, my school, and to the amazing culture and people of Taiwan and China. I can honestly, and whole-heartedly say that that this journey has changed me. The lessons learned and things I’ve experienced will shape the person that I become in the future. 

Thank you again to my professors, classmates, tour guides, friends, and family that made this trip not only possible, but rewarding. Huge shout-out to Kaitlin Yau for the constant photography (including the picture above). 

It’s only a matter of time before I return here. I know this for sure.

COMPANY VISIT TO DANGDANG.COM! 

Huge shout out to the many staff that welcomed us with a warm reception last week as the Dawgs explored the offices of dangdang.com. 

The huge online book retailer was very forthcoming with its vision for the future which included big data, AI, online instruction videos, and a surprising focus on paper books and brick and mortar stores. Yes, the e-commerce giant was happy to share that it believes the Chinese people are making a shift back to physical books and they are ready to provide for it. They explained that although the brick and mortar locations are a smaller part of the business model and to small extent losing the company money, they will remain open in preparation for the cultural shift back to hard covers. The company seemed satisfied with their data in support of such a bold prediction. 

While Amazon and other e-commerce retailers in the US focus on e-book sales and promoting online readers like Audible this thriving company is taking a different approach. It will interesting to watch this company’s progress over the next few years.

Yesterday the group and I had an amazing opportunity to explore the worlds of both fashion and Capital Management. Conde Nast International’s Vogue/GQ Office in Taipei hosted us first, giving us unique insights into how they are using real time feedback through Google Analytics to shape both their digital and print content. We heard from both their Head of Data Analytics, Terrance, and their Sr. Editor of IMC for Vogue, Joy. 

Tmesis hosted us later in the day and gave us a fantastic presentation on both their cutting edge FinTech AI technology and what it truly means to be an entrepreneur in life and in Taiwan. Tmesis preached heavily of the importance of AI, blockchain, finding new alphas and making excellent returns through statistical arbitrage. The speakers at this meeting were their CEO and CIO Mr. Ralph Cheng, and their Lead Engineer and Developer Scott. 

Both meetings were great learning experiences and presented a mass of real-world information that the group can learn from. THAT WAS ONLY THE FIRST DAY! Looking forward to the next, stay tuned.
