At around 11:30 PM on July 22, 2015, police received a call from 12-year-old Daniel Bever who stated his brother was attacking the family. Screaming and commotion were heard in the background before the line went dead. Dispatchers attempted to call back, but when no one answered, police were dispatched to the home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. When the first responding officers arrived at the scene, they first noted blood on the porch. After knocking on the door, they heard a faint cry for help, so they forced their way inside only to find 13-year-old Crystal Bever bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds. She immediately identified her two older brothers, 18-year-old Robert Bever and 16-year-old Michael Bever as the killers. Authorities combed through the house after pulling Crystal out only to discover five family members dead, including Daniel, who reported the incident. The mother was killed by 48 stab wounds, while the father suffered 28. Daniel was stabbed nine times, and the youngest daughter, just aged 5, had been stabbed a total 18 times. Crystal survived her injuries, and Robert and Michael were captured by police shortly after the family massacre. A motive was never revealed, although the brothers were known to admire serial killer and planned on becoming serial killers themselves. Robert Bever eventually pleaded guilty to all counts and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Michael’s trial has yet to commence.

During his incarceration, serial killer John Wayne Gacy took up painting, with much of his artwork featuring what he depicted himself as ‘’Pogo the Clown’’. A grand total of 19 paintings were auctioned off, selling from $200 to as high as $20 000. Some of the pieces were purchased with the sheer intent of demolishing them. After Gacy’s execution in 1994, 25 of the killer’s paintings were burned at a communal fire attended by over 3000 people, which included his victim’s families.

Aileen Wuornos, who was sentenced to death for shooting seven male victims to death for the purpose of robbing them, did not order a last meal and instead ate a hamburger and other snack food from the prison’s canteen. On the morning of October 9th, 2002, Aileen’s demeanor was described as ‘’calm’’ as she was placed on a steel gurney, her arms taped down to wooden paddles. Her final words before she was administered the lethal injection were, “I’d just like to say I’m sailing with the Rock and I’ll be back like Independence Day with Jesus, June 6, like the movie, big mother ship and all. I’ll be back.” It took a whopping 15 minutes for her entire body to shut down. At 9:47, Aileen Wuornos–possibly America’s most infamous serial killer–was pronounced dead.

Ted Bundy fell head over heels for a classmate named Diane Edwards (also known as Stephanie Brooks) whom he met at the University of Washington. The two entered a brief relationship and she ultimately broke his heart. He later managed to rekindle his romance with Diane by swooning her with his new-found charisma and sophistication, and the pair became secretly engaged in 1973. It was also at this time that Ted was dating another woman, but neither of them knew of each other’s existence. In January 1974, however, Ted abruptly broke off all contact with Diane. All her letters and phone calls to him went unreturned. When she was finally able to get ahold of him over the phone a month later, she asked why he had so suddenly cut off contact without explanation. In a calm tone, Ted responded, ‘’Diane, I have no idea what you mean’’ and hung up. Ted would later explain that he just wanted to prove to himself that he could marry her, although Diane stated she believed he deliberately planned the rejection in advance to retaliate for dumping him years ago. His killing spree commenced only one month later, and his each and every one of his victims bore a striking resemblance to his former lover–all were tall, college-aged, and attractive, with dark hair parted down in the middle, just like Diane. Ted would later recall of the relationship, ‘’It was at once sublime and overpowering. The first touch of hands, the first kiss, the first night, together…for the next six years, S. and I would meet under the most tentative of circumstances.’’

H. H. Holmes

One of the first recorded serial killers, in 1893, H. H. Holmes opened a hotel of horrors in Chicago which he designed for the sole purpose of carrying out the most heinous of murders. Locals called the place “The Castle” due to its immaculate appearance.

Torture rooms —including one that expelled poisonous gas — filled the Castle to the brim. Holmes would invite people into these rooms and then kill them in a variety of horrific ways.

Holmes eventually left Chicago for Texas, where he planned to open a similar death hotel. These plans quickly fell through, though, and so he wandered across the U.S. and Canada. Police originally arrested him in Missouri on charges of selling mortgaged goods but after some investigation found out the true depth of his crimes.

Police were able to confirm nine murders, but believed that Holmes may have killed up to 200 people over the course of his life, a number they based on missing people reports during the time of his criminal activity. U.S. authorities hanged Holmes in 1896 at Moyamensing Prison.

The Real Buffalo Bill

Edward Theodore Gein’s early years were harsh but, sadly, unremarkable for their time. Born in 1906 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, Ed was the younger son of George and Augusta Gein. According to a study of Gein’s life by psychology students at Virginia’s Radford University, George was a violent alcoholic who routinely beat young Ed to the point that his ears rang. Augusta, who chiefly supported the family through her work as a grocer, was a domineering religious fanatic who verbally abused Ed and his older brother, Henry. Despite this abuse, Ed was deeply devoted to his mother throughout his life. After George Gein died in 1940, this attachment became the source of friction between the Gein brothers, both of whom still lived on the family’s isolated farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin. To Ed’s ire, Henry Gein began to criticize their controlling mother, as well as what he saw as Ed’s overdependence on her. In May 1944, Henry Gein was found dead in a burning field near the family farm. Though Henry’s body had severe head trauma and no signs of having been damaged by the fire, his death was ruled accidental. Just months after her older son’s death, Augusta Gein suffered the first of a series of strokes. By December 1945, she too had died, leaving Ed the last surviving member of his immediate family.Ed’s behavior quickly spiraled out of control. Over the next several years, he sneaked into local cemeteries to dig up corpses, including his mother’s. The bodies he exhumed were typically those of middle-aged women. In 1951, another middle-aged woman caught Gein’s eye: the very much alive Mary Hogan, who owned a local tavern and was said to resemble Ed’s mother.

Richard Ramirez the night stalker

Richard Ramirez committed his first murder in the Tenderloin District of San Fransisco. A nine-year-old, Mei Leung, was discovered in the basement of the hotel Ramirez was living in during 1984. She had been raped, beaten and stabbed. Her body was found hanging from a pipe in the basement area of the hotel. While this is Richard Ramirez’s first crime, he did not receive any credit for his first kill until 2009 when DNA from the crime scene was matched to Ramirez. The crimes Richard Ramirez committed during what is known as the era of the Night Stalker began June 28, 1984. Jennie Vincow, a 79-year old resident of Glassell Park, was found brutally stabbed to death. The attack happened while the woman slept. Her neck was cut so deep, she was almost decapitated. Ramirez was linked to the crime thanks to fingerprints found on the window screen he cut to gain access to Jennie Vincow’s apartment. The next Night Stalker crime occurred on March 17, 1985. Richard Ramirez shot 22-year old Maria Hernandez in the face as she pulled into the garage of her Rosemead home. She survived the shooting thanks to the keys she had in the hand she held up to defend herself from Ramirez’s attack. Her roommate did not fare so well. Dayle Okazaki hid behind the kitchen counter when she heard the gunshot that wounded Maria Hernandez. Ramirez shot her in the face as she peeked out from her hiding place. She did not survive the attack. Something about the attack on Hernandez and the murder of Okazaki set Ramirez off. He attacked another woman within hours of the Rosemead attacks. Tsai-Lian “Veronica” Yu was forcefully removed from her vehicle at the hands of a crazed Ramirez. She was shot twice with a 22 caliber handgun. Although she was rushed to the hospital, she did not survive the attack. Three attacks that led to two murders in one day gained Richard Ramirez media attention. At this point, he was known for rotting teeth and bulging eyes. He gained his first nicknames from the press: The Valley Killer and The Walk-in Killer. Within days, Richard Ramirez’s insatiable appetite for violence drove him to commit more murders. On March 27, Ramirez broke into the home of Vincent Zazzarra. It was in the Zazzara home where Ramirez perfected his killing style. The 64-year-old husband was murdered first, killed by a gunshot wound. His wife, Maxine, was then brutally assaulted and stabbed to death. Ramirez then gouged out her eyes and placed them in a jewelry box he found while robbing the couple’s home. The autopsy of Maxine revealed many of her stab wounds occurred after she had died. The killing of the husband and then assaulting the wife before brutally murdering her became Ramirez’s standard killing pattern. This attack also left the first real clue to assist police at the beginning of the hunt. In the flowerbed outside the Zazzarra home, a shoe print from a pair of Avia sneakers was found, photographed and a cast was taken off the print. This wasn’t much evidence, but it was a place to start. After killing the Zazzarra couple, Ramirez was at it again, this time in Monterey Park. On May 14, 1985, Ramirez entered the Doi home. Bill Doi and his disabled wife were tortured and assaulted by Ramirez. Bill Doi died of his injuries while in the hospital. Lillian was bound while Ramirez ransacked their home. Ramirez then assaulted and raped the poor woman. A short 15 days later, Ramirez continued his reign of terror. In Monrovia, Ramirez entered the home of sisters, 83-year-old Mabel “Ma” Bell and 81-year-old Florence “Nettie” Long. Ramirez attacked both women with a hammer he found in the home. He used an electrical cord to shock and torture Bell. He bound and raped Nettie Long and then used Bell’s lipstick to draw a pentagram on her leg and the walls of her bedroom. Age was not a consideration for Ramirez. Both women were comatose at the time they were finally discovered. Mabel “Ma” Bell died as a result of the attack. The Night Stalker’s reign of horror continued unchecked. Ramirez's next victim was 42-year old Carole King of Burbank. Carole’s 11-year-old son was home at the time of the break-in and assault. Both mother and son were handcuffed while Ramirez searched the house for valuables. After his search proved fruitless, he released Carole Kyle and forced her to show him where the valuables were hidden. He then repeatedly raped Carole, telling her not to look at him or he will cut her eyes out. Both mother and son survived the attack. Ramirez fled the home after binding them together. Richard Ramirez’s terror knew no bounds, geographically or otherwise. He killed in Arcadia, Sierra Madre and again in Monterey Park. In Sierra Madre, Ramirez entered the home of 16-year-old Whitney Bennett. After beating the girl with a tire iron, he searched in vain for a knife. When the search proved fruitless, he strangled the girl with a telephone cord. The telephone cord started to emit sparks while Whitney Bennett began breathing. This scared the satanist so much as he thought it was a sign from God. He fled the home. Bennett was lucky enough to survive the attack although she required more than 400 stitches to close her wounds. Not long after the Sierra Madre attack, Ramirez broke into the home of 61-year old Joyce Lucille Nelson. He beat her to death with his fists and then kicked her in the head, leaving behind another Avia sneaker print on the poor woman’s face. Evidently, Ramirez didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about evidence left behind during his killings. At the beginning of August of 1986, Ramirez committed two more attacks in rapid succession. In Northridge, he entered the home of Chris and Virginia Peterson. He shot Virginia. Chris ended up shot multiple times as he fought off Ramirez. Both Petersons were lucky enough to survive the attack. A mere two days later, Ramirez broke into the Aboweth home in Diamond Bar, California. He almost immediately shot the husband in his sleep. He brutally attacked Sakina Aboweth, raping her and demanding she “swear on Satan” that she would not scream. The couples' three-year-old child woke up during the attack. Ramirez tied the boy up and continued raping his mother. After Ramirez finished his brutal attack and fled the home, Sakina untied her son and sent him to a neighbors house for help. Both mother and son survived the attack. The Night Stalker’s reign of terror continued throughout the Los Angelas area. By the middle of August of 1985, Ramirez had seen news coverage of his crimes and knew he was being hunted. In a poor attempt to evade the investigation, Ramirez left the Los Angelas area and fled to San Fransisco. At the home of Barbara and Peter Pan, Ramirez continued exacting horror on his unsuspecting victims. As per his usual style, he shot Peter in the head before attacking, raping, and murdering Barbara. Before leaving the Pan home, Richard Ramirez used Barbara’s lipstick to scrawl a pentagram on the wall as well as the phrase “Jack the Knife”. After watching a press conference detailing the evidence, Ramirez dropped his Avia sneakers over the side of the Golden Gate Bridge, destroying an important piece of evidence. Detectives were furious about the press conference and the discussion of the evidence for this very reason. Perhaps the news coverage rattled Ramirez’s nerves and caused him to get sloppy or maybe he was exhausted from the pace at which he was committing his atrocious crimes. Either way, Richard Ramirez began to take bigger risks which left behind more evidence and allowed more opportunity for capture. On August 24, 1985, Ramirez attempted to enter the Ramero home in Mission Viejo. The Ramero family had just returned from vacation. The family’s 13-year-old son happened to be awake when Ramirez began attempting to gain entry to the house. He was able to scare the brave Night Stalker off while gathering valuable evidence. Thanks to young Ramero’s quick thinking, police had the color, model and make of the vehicle Ramirez was driving as well as a partial license plate number. The boy was under the impression he had chased away a regular, not-at-all sadistic thief. In reality, his actions probably saved his family’s lives. After the near miss in Mission Viejo, Ramirez committed his final break-in and attack. At the home of Bill Cams and Inez Erickson, Richard Ramirez once again followed his usual routine of shooting the male resident first, then attacking the female resident. Ramirez announced to Inez that he was the Night Stalker, further terrifying the poor woman. He made her swear on Satan before beating her and raping her. He stole what valuables he could find, told Inez to “tell them the night stalker was here” and fled the home. Inez was able to get free and find help for Bill Cams. Both victims survived their encounter with the Night Stalker. By allowing both victims to survive, Ramirez unknowingly aided in the investigation surrounding him. Inez was able to describe her assailant, helping detectives to form a better picture of the identity of the Night Stalker. Along with the description of Ramirez provided by Inez Erickson, a single fingerprint was found on the vehicle stolen by Ramirez in Wilshire Center. These two critical pieces of evidence were added to a cast of Ramirez’s Avia sneaker prints. The fingerprint was enough to give police the rap sheet for a 25-year-old, drug addicted drifter known as Richard Munoz Ramirez. Detectives held a press conference where a mug shot of Ramirez was released to the public. Detectives made it clear they were on to Ramirez by saying during the press conference, “We know who you are now, and soon everyone else will. There will be no place you can hide.” Time was running out for Ramirez. He was getting sloppy and the police now had a clear target. Detectives had enough insight to stake out local bus stations in hopes of catching Richard Ramirez Night Stalker attempting to flee the area. Ramirez had returned from a quick trip to see his brother in Texas. Realizing he had been spotted by police, the courageous Night Stalker hid behind an elderly Hispanic woman, declaring himself “the matador” or the killer in Spanish. He then fled, attempting to carjack two different people in the process. Eventually, a crowd of bystanders surrounded him, beat him, and held him until police arrived to arrest him. The Night Stalker’s reign of terror had finally, mercifully ended.

A Millionaire Pig Farmer Killed People and Fed Them to His Pigs

Robert Pickton, a millionaire pig farmer in British Columbia, murdered anywhere between six and 50 prostitutes from the Vancouver area, cut up their bodies, and fed them to his pigs.

Pickton would cruise around the seediest areas of Vancouver, luring hookers back to his sprawling pig farm with the promise of money and drugs, where he brutally murdered them and dismembered their bodies for creative disposal.

Pickton didn’t just feed the bodies to his pigs, though. He kept the head, hands, and feet of some of his victims bundled up in refrigerators around the farm. He mulched some of his victims in a wood chipper. And investigators are almost 100 percent certain that he lumped human remains together with unusable pig parts (like intestines, blood, and bones) and took them all up to a rendering plant in Vancouver to be processed into things like lipstick, shampoo, and soap, which reveals two horrible truths about the cosmetics industry.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver police department simply didn’t give a shit about the disappearing women. They reasoned that all the women were drug addicts and had either wandered off to other cities or died anonymously of overdoses. They literally fired an investigator for having the gall to suggest that a serial killer might be responsible. One of Pickton’s victims actually managed to escape the pig farm, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, and prosecutors dismissed the subsequent attempted murder charges against him because the most important descriptor of Robert Pickton at this time was “millionaire.”

Pickton was eventually brought to justice when an employee came forward with damning testimony that led to a full-scale investigation, and he received a life sentence.

Katherine Knight Cooked Her Husband and Tried to Feed Him to His Children

Knight met a father of three named John Price and they moved in together, despite the fact that Price was well aware of her explosive fits of inexplicable slobbering Looney Tunes rage. Price wound up kicking her out and filed a restraining order against her, telling his co-workers that if he ever failed to show up for work, she had probably killed him. He then gallantly allowed Knight back into his house for sex and fell asleep beside her, which suggests that Price perhaps didn’t completely understand how restraining orders are supposed to work. Knight underscored this error by stabbing Price 37 times. When Price didn’t show up for work the next day, his co-workers called the police, who showed up at Price’s house to discover his skinned, headless body lying on the living room floor.

Knight had draped his skin, completely intact in a single piece, over an S hook in a doorway like a vanity curtain in Leatherface’s house. Price’s head was boiling in a pot on the stove, and pieces of his butt had been pan-fried with vegetables and gravy and plated up on the table in two place settings with name tags indicating that they were meant for Price’s adult children.

Knight pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Issei Sagawa

This cannibal became a local celebrity after signing himself out of a Japanese mental institution in 1986. Issei Sagawa came from a wealthy family and had exhibited cannibalistic urges from an early age, even engaging in beastiality. At 23, he made his first attempt at eating human flesh, breaking into a woman’s house to cut off some of her flesh. He was caught and charged with attempted rape.

Later, he would move to France to earn his Ph.D in literature. It would be then, at the age of 32, that Sagawa would kill and eat his classmate Renée Hartevelt. He admitted to luring the 25-year-old Dutch woman to his apartment under the guise of working on poetry. He said he chose her for her beauty and health—two things he believed he lacked. After shooting her in the neck, he ate various parts of her body over the course of two days. He then attempted to dump her body (including two suitcases of her dismembered body parts) into a lake in the Bois de Boulogne, but was caught in the act.

After being held for two years in police custody, Sagawa was deemed legally insane in French court and was ordered to be held indefinitely in a mental health institution. After being deported to Japan, he was declared sane by Japanese psychologists and so was able to sign himself out of care.

The unicorn killer

As an adolescent, Ira Einhorn gave himself the nickname of “The Unicorn”: the English translation of his German surname. The killer was an environmental activist and part of the anti-war movement when he murdered his ex-girlfriend, Holly Maddux.

Maddux disappeared in early September 1977 after stopping by Einhorn’s Philadelphia apartment to collect her things following their break-up. Several weeks after Maddux’s death, police questioned her ex-boyfriend about her whereabouts, to which he stated she had disappeared on her way to the neighborhood co-op. Eighteen months later, after neighbors began reporting a rancid smell, police found Maddux’s body stuffed in a trunk in Einhorn’s closet. Several days before Einhorn was supposed to stand trial, he fled to Europe.

As Einhorn had already been arraigned, the court was able to try, convict, and sentence him in absentia. Despite this fact, Einhorn managed to remain in France for 23 years, even getting married while craftily evading extradition. The U.S. government was finally able to bring him back to the states and re-convict him in 2002. Einhorn is now serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole
