From whence I sprung
I've been a fan of TOPS since their first release on the fabulous Arbutus a couple of years ago but the three songs I've heard so far (see also "Sleeptalker" and "Way to be Loved") from the forthcoming new one have just slayed me. Really pure songwriting that has that classic smokey, alluring vagueness -- totally accessible emotionally but in a way that feels like it comes from a very particular place somewhere else. Classy, subtle production chops and that wow voice... yes! Buy this record!!! http://tinyurl.com/pqoh8t9

The only adequate criticism of a work of art is another work of art.
Donald Barthelme, “The Art of Fiction No. 66” in the Paris Review (interviewed by J.D. O’Hara).
Thank god we don’t know a lot about Shakespeare or Moses or Homer or Lautréamont. These are the best guys we got, and their art is powerful because they’re mysterious. Once biographical information contaminates your consciousness, it’s impossible to erase it and look at someone’s work the same way again.
