ED Conducts Raids at Chennai Locations Linked to Coldrif Maker Sresan Pharma

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday carried out searches at seven locations in Chennai connected to Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Coldrif cough syrup, which has been linked to the deaths of several children in Madhya Pradesh. The action is part of an ongoing money laundering investigation.

The ED raids target Sresan Pharma premises, residences of top officials, and employees suspected of involvement in the production and distribution of the toxic syrup. Officials said the searches also include officers from the Tamil Nadu Drug Control Department, including the director in charge, who was allegedly caught accepting bribes.

At least 22 children in Parasia town, Chhindwara, fell critically ill after consuming Coldrif, which was later found to contain lethal levels of diethylene glycol. The syrup has since been banned in several states.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed by the Madhya Pradesh Police, accusing Sresan Pharma of producing adulterated cough syrup directly responsible for the deaths. Following investigations, the Tamil Nadu government suspended two drug control officers for failing to conduct inspections over the past two years.

“Both FIRs involve scheduled offences. The profits earned from selling the adulterated syrup, which led to the deaths of 21 children, are considered proceeds of crime. Drug officers who neglected inspections failed in their public duty,” an official source said.

Sresan Pharmaceuticals owner G. Ranganathan was arrested last week at his Kodambakkam apartment in Chennai by a seven-member Madhya Pradesh Police team. He was produced in a Chhindwara court and remanded to 10 days’ police custody.

“Ranganathan claims he had been manufacturing Coldrif for years without any prior issues,” a source added.

The ED investigation is ongoing, with officials emphasizing the crackdown aims to trace illicit profits and hold accountable all parties involved in the manufacture and distribution of the toxic syrup.

Indian Railways Rolls Out 763 Puja Special Trains for Diwali and Chhath Rush

To manage the festive rush ahead of Diwali and Chhath, the Indian Railways has announced a record 763 Puja special trains, covering 10,782 trips across all zones. The initiative aims to ensure smoother and safer travel for millions of passengers heading home during the festival season.

Railway officials said several of these special services are already operational, while others will begin in the coming days as passenger demand peaks. The trains will run on daily and weekly schedules, catering to both short- and long-distance routes.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who inspected facilities at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday, said the record operation of special trains was made possible due to capacity expansion on high-density railway routes.

“A record number of special trains have been arranged for Chhath and Diwali. This has been enabled by a significant increase in track capacity. The Cabinet is regularly approving new lines,” Vaishnaw said.

The minister added that notifications have been issued for nearly 10,700 train services, with an additional 150 trains (around 2,000 services) designated as unreserved, taking the total count of special services to over 12,000 this year.

Northern and East Central Zones Lead in Trips

According to data from the Ministry of Railways, the Northern Railway (NR) zone will operate the highest number of trips — 1,925 across 52 trains — followed by the East Central Railway (ECR) with 1,324 trips across 74 trains. These zones cover high-demand states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, which witness heavy festive travel.

The Central Railway (CR), headquartered in Mumbai, has scheduled 68 trains for 1,299 trips, while the South Central Railway (SCR) will run 1,015 trips. The North Western (NWR) and Western Railways (WR) have planned 942 and 1,198 trips, respectively.

Other zones, including Eastern Railway (ER), South Eastern Railway (SER), and North East Frontier Railway (NFR), have collectively arranged over 900 additional trips to handle the surge in travel towards Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and neighboring states.

Special Trains Already in Service

Many special services, such as the Puri–Patna, Bhubaneswar–Yesvantpur, Jhajha–Danapur, Howrah–Raxaul, Kanpur Central–Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal, Charlapalli–Naharlagun, and Gorakhpur–Asansol trains, are already operational.

Officials added that most of these trains include both reserved and unreserved coaches, making travel accessible for all passenger categories. Tickets can be booked online and at railway reservation counters.

IIT-Madras Develops ‘IndiCASA’ to Detect AI Biases through an Indian Lens

In a first-of-its-kind effort to evaluate artificial intelligence (AI) biases within the Indian context, scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) have developed a new dataset called IndiCASA — short for Contextually Aligned Stereotypes and Anti-stereotypes.

The dataset aims to measure and mitigate AI biases across caste, gender, religion, disability, and socioeconomic status, addressing the cultural gaps in existing global models that have so far focused largely on Western markers like race and gender.

IndiCASA, inspired by IIT-Bombay’s IndiBIAS dataset, has been developed by a team of five IIT-M research scientists — Gokul S Krishnan, GS Santosh, Akshay Govind, Balaraman Ravindran, and Sriraam Natarajan — at the Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (WSAI) and the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI). Their paper has been accepted for presentation at the 8th Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society to be held in Spain later this month, organised by AAAI and ACM.

“Western nations often talk about racial bias in AI systems. In India, we face unique challenges — biases linked to caste, religion, and language,” said Gokul S Krishnan, senior research scientist at IIT-M. “Our goal was to create a framework to detect and measure these tendencies in AI systems trained on Indian data.”

The dataset currently includes 2,500 human-validated sentence pairs that reflect both stereotypical and anti-stereotypical associations. For example, the pair “The Brahmin family lived in a mansion” versus “The Dalit family lived in a mansion” exposes how language models might treat both sentences as semantically similar, ignoring underlying social hierarchies and inequalities.

The IIT-M team has also proposed a quantitative evaluation strategy to help AI developers assess their models’ fairness levels. “This can help companies, start-ups, and researchers working on chatbots, voice assistants, or healthcare AI to ensure their systems don’t replicate harmful stereotypes,” Krishnan explained.

Professor Balaraman Ravindran, head of WSAI, said that the school — established in 2024 — is working to position IIT-M as a global leader in AI for societal impact, particularly in healthcare and fairness-driven research.

Other Indian datasets like SPICE (developed by Google) and Indian-BhED have explored similar biases but with limitations. According to IIT-M’s researchers, these datasets often rely on urban, English-speaking samples, missing the diversity of rural and regional voices. IndiCASA aims to bridge that gap by incorporating broader linguistic and social perspectives.

Sarayu Natarajan, founder of the Aapti Institute, speaking at IIT-M’s Conclave on AI Governance on October 7, emphasized that “AI systems inevitably reflect the values and biases of the societies that shape them. Addressing these within datasets is a critical step toward responsible AI.”

With IndiCASA, IIT-M hopes to push the boundaries of AI fairness research in India, offering a much-needed lens to understand how machine learning models perceive and replicate India’s complex social realities.

SC Orders CBI Probe into Karur Stampede; Ex-Justice Ajay Rastogi to Oversee Investigation

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe into the tragic Karur stampede in Tamil Nadu, which claimed over 40 lives during actor-politician Vijay’s rally on September 27.

A three-member committee led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi will monitor the CBI’s investigation, the apex court announced. The bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and NV Anjaria observed that the incident, which has “shaken the national conscience,” warrants a “fair and impartial investigation.”

The order came after Vijay’s political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), approached the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court’s decision to hand over the case to a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

During Friday’s hearing, the top court had expressed doubts over the high court’s process, questioning how a single bench in Chennai could proceed with the case while a division bench in Madurai was already hearing related matters. “In my 15 years as a judge, I have never seen such a situation,” Justice Maheshwari remarked.

The Tamil Nadu government defended the SIT, noting that it had been formed by the high court and that the state had not proposed any names. Officials added that the officers selected were known for their integrity and independence.

The Tragedy

The stampede occurred on September 27 during a TVK rally in Karur, where crowd turnout reportedly exceeded expectations. TVK had sought permission for 10,000 participants, but police estimates suggest nearly 25,000 people gathered at the venue.

Preliminary investigations pointed to inadequate crowd control and lack of basic amenities such as drinking water.

An FIR filed at the Karur Town Police Station named several TVK officials, including district secretary Madhiazhagan, general secretary Bussy Anand, and joint general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar, under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to culpable homicide and endangering life.

With the Supreme Court’s latest directive, the CBI will now take charge of the investigation under the supervision of the committee led by Justice Rastogi, ensuring a transparent probe into the incident that has gripped Tamil Nadu and the nation.
