hello my name is car person and i would like to drive down the road at 1 william miles per hour at 2:04 in the morning. my automotive vehicle makes more noise than an airplane and i want everyone to know just how cool i am for spending several thousand dollars on aftermarket parts to make it go slightly faster which is why i also removed the part that makes it quiet because everyone deserves to know that my car goes slightly faster than a stock vehicle of the same make and model because i'm cool. also did i mention it is 2:04 in the morning

I was watching The Pitt s2 the same way I watch Raging Bull I feel like Robby is very De Niro in this the way he's having a mental breakdown that makes him an irredeemable asshole. they're both so close to figuring it out but they never will. if De Niro would just put down the boxing gloves and stop treating everything in his life like a boxing match, if Robby would just take the surgical gloves off and put the stethoscope down, they might find some kind of peace and stop alienating everyone in their lives but they don't know how to do that.

I wish they leaned more into the active mental breakdown stuff they did with him in S1 with the pandemic flashbacks. I thought those were a pretty effective way of framing his erratic behaviour without necessarily justifying it all the time. Like honestly I think the Mel & Becca stuff is an effective example of that - you are sympathetic to Mel being upset at her sister for hiding things from her, but the show also doesn’t frame her as correct for thinking her sister is an eternal child with zero sexual desires or agency. The motorcycle vacation stuff with Robby isn’t effective in comparison imo and I feel like I need to fill in the gaps to relate to his behaviour without justifying it. Because like for most of the season I’ve gotten the impression that like, yeah sure he’s an asshole, but the asshole behaviour is always triggered by something “rational” and he’s often framed as correct, especially with Dr Al-Hashimi

hi! just wondering if you've read "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us Al" and whether you've got any thoughts about it? i was thinking of checking it out but tend to be wary about content that seems to blow the impact of AI way outta proportion

I don’t read popular press non-fiction very often and basically just talk to 1 academic who is much more knowledgable than I am about AI, so I tend to dismiss fearmongering stuff out of hand because it’s not worth my time + I can read all those opinions online for free

they set up dr al-hashimi from day 1 to be evil because she’s pro-AI so even when Robby is framed as maaaaaybe unreasonable in how much of an asshole he’s being (rare) there’s still a pre-made emotional justification for the audience to intuitively side with him when he argues with her, in addition to all the other normal justifications (protagonist, man, sad/traumatised, hot, etc)

It’s either not clocked as horrible behaviour (letting ICE agents arrest people)#or it’s justified for XYZ reasons

A couple weeks ago I was in an accident as a pedestrian in a small us college town that brags about its bike infrastructure and the person putting my stitches in at the ER talked about how if she hit a student with her car she'd sue *them* for the emotional damages. i'm okay physically but damn. Very generally speaking, when you see a black man in a piece of media, be it tv show, movie, video game, etc. there’s something you often see a lot of writers do. To go against the stereotype of black men (and black people in general) being dumb and lazy, you’ll see this black male character being smart and an achiever.

The Black Nerd. A common character type, the nerd will always be very interested in all things nerdy: science, video games, mathematics, etc. In an continued effort to combat stereotypes, the Black Nerd will be lack athleticism, probably being asthmatic (the nerdiest of conditions). The Black Nerd will dress smartly, suspenders and bow ties. They’ll always talk smart too, using proper English with complex words.

Now, I don’t have a problem with a black character being a nerd, indeed black people are a people; we aren’t all the same and we all have varying personalities. The problem I have is that too often we see a distinct disconnect between Blackness and the Black Nerd. The Black Nerd doesn’t listen to hip hop or rap, only classical music. The Black Nerd only has white friends, the only other black characters are into not nerdy stuff. The Black Nerd never ever uses AAVE at any time in any context.

And again I must say that Black people, not being a monolith, there are no hard fast rules to being Black. I’m more than sure there are Black people like what I’ve described above, I’m not saying it’s impossible; what I’m getting at is that the only Black Nerd we see. There are Black Nerds that play basketball, that bump Kendrick Lamar, and use AAVE since it’s an ever changing dialect. I’m just saying there’s no one way of being a nerd and no one way of being Black.
