valiant is afraid of rejection.  that’s just the hot take.  every ex he has screwed him over in the past -- his ex wife being the last in a long list.  He’s come to the conclusion that he has either POOR TASTE in people, or his judgement of character is just not as strong as he thinks it is ... he falls in love so easily, and loves so big and so deep it’s just easy to get hurt.  He has a tendency to think he matters more to people than he does and he knows it -- but he can’t just love people less ... he’s used to being rejected, to being told he’s too much -- 

But it would be really nice, for once, to be told he’s just right.

a fun fact about valiants bedroom is that he has one of those beds that runs the entire length of the wall on one side and is thus gREAT for cuddle sessions with more than two people.  Dude is also HUGE.

She slides the chain off the latch, moves the stool out of the way and puts Butterball up past the gate between the kitchen and the living room, before she lets him in.  

“ Daddy just went to take a shower.  He didn’t take one when he came home last night, so he smelled like a sweaty sock.  I wouldn’t let him help me with the christmas cookies till he cleaned up -- But you can come in ... “ She’s all done up in an apron, dotted with flour and smears of what appears to be drying mixture on her face.  “ Can I ask your name?  Mines Rhys. “

A panic leaps into his throat, threatening to suffocate him.  ( He’s had this particular conversation before, he knows how it ends -- or at least, he’s afraid he knows how it ends. )  His shoulders sag under the weight of it.  A hand comes up, rubbing nervous at the back of his neck.

He’s prepared for the worst, braced for impact against the inevitable, the long plunge to the concrete.  That he clearly cares more about work, that he’s not dedicated enough to their relationship -- all the shit his wife filled his head with -- and the inevitable ‘ you have to choose ‘ that he’d hoped wouldn’t come from Seb ... because just as he had told Isabella, this is always going to come first.  Saving lives, protecting people, it’s always going to come first -- 

He may be jumping to conclusions, but his mind suggests it to be a perfectly logical leap.
