Spicy Film Festival 2021 - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
In my personal film festival (lol), I try to look at movies through the lens of empowerment. Like you, I'm also juggling many jobs and responsibilities so, if you are just getting around to watching Oscar Nominee MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM...here are some thoughts on why you should experience this soul aching and lifting movie, asap. I ask for your patience, in advance, if I omit any cinematic context you may be looking for but just a reminder, this is an empowerment lens on a film - not a critical film review. Carry on...
The players find themselves at a recording studio, to make dreams come true, under certain terms. The power you'll pull from this film is from the entire cast; the people they are IRL and the "music" they make together as an acting ensemble.
It is amazing to think of what Chadwick Boseman (heart aches) did to complete this performance. He is, incredible in his part - bringing me to invest in his dreams, laugh at his mischief and cry in his pain. Viola Davis is power. You feel what she, and the character, must have been through to get "here." You can't not feel her as Ma Rainey. She ignites this character with so much depth in such a short time. Glynn Turman represents something many of us experience today...what part of the past is ok to carry into the future? What should we work with and what should we light on fire? This character is a slow burn and Mr. Turman keeps it tight until fate takes over. Colman Domingo is a reminder, in this film, that there is a framework of power during this recording session - and in society. He bounces between Ma and the band and the two producers who have exploitation dripping from their suspenders, as a steady and comforting thread.
I was not expecting such a moving film considering it was an adaptation of a stage play. Clearly, I have more to learn about Ruben Santiago-Hudson (Writer) and George C. Wolfe (Director).
Inside note: I worked on a film, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK...and Colman was a steady force in that as well. See BEALE STREET if you haven't yet...these are stories you must know.
