               hows the family  -     she laughs.   such a lighthearted,  casual question he asks,   as if he had not left a void in the lives of all the isaksen in the years of his absence.   there was no need to delve into uncomfortable topics if he wasn’t ready,    sachiko concluded.    she had felt grateful,  in fact,   that they had easily slipped back into their age old dynamic without a hitch   -   why rock the boat so soon?    there would be time for that.   wouldn’t there?

            “   they’re well,  ”      leaning against her palm she cannot seem to stop herself from studying every inch of him,   eyes scanning from his fluffy hear to the tips of his neat shoes.        admiring the subtle changes,   adoring what had stayed the same.       “  lets see…    mamma   &   pappa had another kid…     ame is applying for university now,   can you believe it?  ”     a wistful sigh parts her lips,    where does the time go ?      “ everyone misses you, of course,  but that’s to be expected,  right?  ”   a chime of laughter soon replaces the sigh,   brightening her expression as she leans back comfortably. 

             “   and you?  still doing music?   ”      she knew better than to ask after his family so early into the conversation  ;  allow them to get settled,  more comfortable,  gauge his mood.  then,  maybe,  the topic would be broached.

                 CAREFULLY HE FOCUSES ON HER FACE .  /   searching  ,   timidly  ,  for something there  --  though he doesn’t know what he’s looking for yet .   there is little that has changed here   ;    she was the same warm  ,   caring  ,   goofy woman she’s always been  ;   one that he knows would open her arms  &  welcome him back whenever the time came for it.  she’s gotten older ,  gotten more mature .   that means he’s changed too  (    he hopes    )  .  

           ‘    no fuckin’ way.   ’   he blinks  ,   lips pursing in interest.  the isaken family had always been large  --  now it was even larger  --   though he supposes that was a good thing .   he loved all isakens wholeheartedly  ,   &  thinks to himself that he has a bit more room in his heart for one more.   ‘  ame . . . god ,  i’m old.  ’   displeased   ,    he exhales harshly through his nose.  everyone misses him ?  he wonders how much of that is true .   ‘   . . . yeah ,  of course. music is me.  ’   he intertwines his fingers   ,   leveling her with a fond look .  ‘   went to university for it.  got my degree in composition .  came back because i missed the mundane life. ’   a simple  ,  downplayed shrug.  ‘   what about you though ?  new job ,  anything like that ?   ’

                        AN EYEBROW ARCHES .   /    fingers drum gently over his armrest.  ‘  now you think i’d let just about  anyone  have some of  this  , sir  ?    ’   if any of them were honest men here  ,   they’d say old habits die hard  --  these types of conversations included .  it was hard to look vincent in the eye  &  pretend he didn’t want to just skip the basics  &  think nothing has changed  (    i learned guitar  ,  by the way ,  all on my own  -   )    ‘   please tell me you’re joking.  you traded your artistic ability for a grill ?   damn ,  couldn’t be me.  ’   he frowns , though ,  &  looks as if he wanted to press.  he doesn’t.  

        ‘   awww ,  dude.  don’t go  &  change what god gave you.  someone   has to work an ugly mug around here.  ’
