❝ Then maybe I should quit. ❞
She wasn’t good at handling other people’s emotions, especially Yuri’s. She usually just let him calm down, but it was clear that wouldn’t happen so quickly, this was really the only thing she could think of to catch him off guard.
❝ – If I’m not allowed to be good, then maybe skating isn’t for me, yeah ?? Would hate to step on the toes of the Russian Punk Tiger, Yuri Plisetsky. ❞
It’s not as if she’d ever go up against Yuri to begin with, even if he did challenge her, she’d most likely decline. Anastaysia just had no idea what to do in this situation, she can’t do more than apologize… She was just bluffing, of course, but her own negative emotions got the best of her.
❝ I have been watching. If you were on break & was still on the playing field; you’d do the same. Only reason I wasn’t watching today was because I needed to prove I wasn’t slacking off. I know you’d tear into me if I was. ❞
Watching his progress while she was out gave her some hope that she wouldn’t be as rusty when she did return, as she didn’t plan to be gone for long. She didn’t know what he wanted from her, what more could she give him other than her full attention…
❝ … I should’ve kept you up to date. A heads up, a text, anything… & I’m sorry that I didn’t. I guess… I wanted to surprise you today. ❞
Yuri stopped in his tracks. Quit? “No, wait–” That wasn’t what he meant at all. He knew her well enough that she was likely saying that sarcastically, but the bitterness in her voice made it sound very, very real. “How can you say that?” he asked. “You can’t quit now! Not while you still...” He knew she had what it takes to win. Anastaysia was, in fact, talented; she had worked hard to reach this point, and the fact that Yuri had been upset was evidence of how close she was to the top. If she were to actually quit now, he knew that his heart would feel empty for her absence.
Hearing her explanation, though, it all started to come together. Yuri sighed and unclenched his fists. “Heh... Consider your goal achieved, then,” he said. “It was definitely a surprise, which makes you one of the best here.” Surprising the audience... That was the key to being the greatest, and he knew that well.
“If this is where you’re at now, I’d better see some impressive scores when you compete,” he smirked. “I might even have to teach you a couple moves. Maybe you’ll land a couple quads.” Though he didn’t follow women’s singles, he at least knew that no woman had ever attempted one in competition-- not yet. With work and dedication, though, he had faith that Anastaysia could do it.
A deep blush spread across the girl’s cheeks at the sudden declaration. Ok so maybe the close proximity wasn’t exactly helping the sudden beating of her heart but it was just something sweet, nothing more…right?
Smiling she leaned forward slightly with a grin. “I’ll make sure to hold you to that Yuri. I look forward to it.”
“Although….” Emily began coyly with a smirk. “Not if I become super famous first, then I’ll be the one spoiling you.” she confidently said poking his chest in a teasing manner.
For a second her face was dead serious before she burst into giggles, the sound echoing in the quiet darkened room.
Perhaps it was simply him mirroring Emily’s expression, but Yuri also felt warmth bloom in his cheeks. It was a good thing that they didn’t compete against each other, because he wouldn’t have accepted it otherwise. Even now, he was reluctant to accept gifts from others; coming from a relatively modest background, his pride never allowed the taking of charity from others. However, that wouldn’t be the case from her. It was normal to want to share one’s achievements with others.
He leaned over to nudge her shoulder with his own. “You’ve got some catching up to do, then,” he smirked. His senior debut had been positively dazzling thanks to Viktor and his coaches. That meant that she had a lot to live up to, and Yuri didn’t intend to slack off in the meantime. “If we’re going to race to the top, you’ll need to really up your game, because I’m not backing down. I’m going after Viktor’s title, and I won’t take anything less.”
He liked her laugh. It sounded natural, relaxed-- even though Yuri preferred to maintain an intimidating presence, having someone this comfortable around him meant he could let his guard down a bit. Others, he considered to be something of a threat, particularly if they were rivals. Emily didn’t fall into that category. She wasn’t just a fan, either-- that would have been annoying. To him, the lack of special treatment was something special in itself.
“There’s got to be a female skater you look up to-- I don’t usually follow them, but once power comes back we could scope out the competition.” If it didn’t come back soon, they could at least crowd around his computer. The battery would only last so long, but a few videos wouldn’t drain it too much.
kvrolcva:
❝ You really are mad about me being gone, huh. ❞
She expected as much from him, it’s not as if she bothered to even keep him up to date with what was going on with her during her absence. But then again, Anastaysia was never the kind of person to involve others in her personal affairs, mainly keeping her life to herself. Even with their close relationship, she still felt the need to keep him out such affairs, in her eyes it just didn’t seem fair to rope him in. Besides, she doubted he would’ve let her walk away from the rink so easily if she did tell him.
❝ I’m sorry I kept quiet. I took some well needed time off from competitive skating, for reasons that don’t concern you. But I know I could’ve at least kept in touch in some way… ❞
Being reserved was going to cost her one of these days, but old habits die hard, she can’t help being the kind of person that she is, but was aware that she would have to make up for the mistakes she’s made. She was just… Unsure how to do so.
❝ If it’s any consolation, I did miss you. You have every right to be mad at me. Though, I’m not sure how a competition would solve things, if not just an attempt to get back at me. Which is completely fair. ❞
She’s really trying to handle this the best she can.
“You think I’m mad because of that?!” Yuri understood completely if she had to drop out for... whatever reason. Even athletes in top form needed breaks every now and then, just to make sure they didn’t overwork themselves and break down. Things happened, and for him that was already in the past. Sure, he’d missed seeing her at practice, but that was the least of his concerns.
“You’re sorry? Yeah, like that’s going to help!” he scoffed. “I had to just ignore the fact that you were missing the whole season. I didn’t know if you were watching or if you were ever coming back-- and now this!” He wasn’t very good at expressing his feelings, only aggression, and so he was likely coming across far more harshly than he truly intended.
“You’re not allowed to be this good coming back from a break,” he huffed. “If I’d known that...” He might have given her a warmer welcome-- might have actually paid more attention to what she was doing in practice, might have skated with her to push her more. “You should speak up more.”
we used to write together - it's so exciting to see you back on my dash! I'm glad to see you're doing well <3
((used to?!?! past tense?!?!
jkjk i'm glad to make you smile!! but i am curious and interested in writing again!))
She laughed softly at his reaction, happy that he liked them as well. Somehow, a part of her didn’t mind sharing them from now on.
“Yeah I have been,” Emily affirmed. “Me and Yuuri were talking about our favorites this one time and Viktor overheard us; asked us some questions, engaged us and…I think you know the rest,” she said laughing. “It was sweet really, but I don’t think Yuuri wants a repeat any time soon. We had more than we knew what to do with.”
There was a far away look in her eyes fondly remembering her cousin’s look of shock at the giant package that arrived the next time filled to the brim with all sorts of snacks.
It was one of the many moments that made her stay all the worthwhile and all the more she was grateful for it.
As long as Emily didn't mind, he continued to go back to the filled marshmallows while sampling some of the other snacks. "It figures. Viktor has more money than he knows what to do with." Of course he'd pick something frivolous like this to spend it on. Still, it had come in handy; though overzealous, having all these snacks would make sure they didn't go hungry before Viktor and Yuuri returned.
"Just because he's famous... When I reach that level, I'll give you better than a bunch of candy." He said it without thought. Though he didn't say so often, if ever, he was in fact fond of their little family, Emily included. His grandfather's care would come first and foremost (knowing that he was getting older was one of Yuri's more constant concerns) but after that? He could see himself spoiling them. By then, he would have built a name for himself, a legacy he could be proud of, and why shouldn't he share it?

❝ You’re still as arrogant as ever. I know you skate better than the rest of the Russian skaters, why should I waste my time watching what I already know. ❞
Anastaysia was always the kind of person to focus on herself before tending to others, even when it came to Yuri; she always did what she needed to do first. She had been out of the game for a while, having taken some time off without much notice, so she had to make up for the time she was gone.
❝ Don’t tell me you’re upset that I’m neglecting you. ❞
"Tch. Look who's talking." It wasn't just neglect; he'd been denied the chance to watch Anastaysia grow as a skater in turn, while she'd been away from the game. How was he supposed to know if she was even in good form, let alone starting to close the gap between their skill levels?
"I'm not upset!" he shouted back, clearly bothered. "You don't get to come out of nowhere and surprise me like that!" As mad as he was about being ignored, he was far angrier at how good she'd gotten-- without him. He'd been paying more attention to the others lately, now that the other Yuri had more or less moved in, and found gratification from being an example for others to aspire to. Being close with Anastaysia, he'd secretly hoped that he could inspire her, too. It disappointed him to know that she'd more or less moved on during her absence. "I'd challenge you to a competition here and now, but we both know it wouldn't be a fair match."
" i think we need to talk. " it's been SO long
"Yeah, we do. What the hell was that?" Off seasons could get kind of boring, and Yuri liked to spend his time one-upping the others on the Russian team-- but a certain someone had been very diligent in her practicing and wasn't letting him show off.
((don't love that i need to find a whole new doctor for my mental health....))
The girl’s eyes lit up. “Ooh I have the perfect thing for this, wait here!”
Scrambling up Emily went to the nearby kitchen area rummaging through one of the upper cabinets. Finally finding what she was looking for she hurried back, placing the flashlight in an upwards position on the coffee table, snacks in hand.
The skater proudly brandished her findings, a mix of this and that setting them down next to the flashlight.
Emily opened a bag of what on the surface looked like regular marshmallows offering one to him with a smile. “Here; try it. I don’t remember exactly the name of it but it’s one of my favorites.” Popping one in her mouth she smiled at the taste of the marshmallow followed by the cool sweet frozen jelly inside.
Yuri observed curiously as Emily scurried off to the kitchen cabinets. He hadn't even realized that there were snacks hidden up there, much less that they were hers; given the Japanese labels on them, he might have assumed they were Yuuri's to begin with. He stared at the bags almost blankly, trying to read the scripts that he'd attempted to familiarize himself with while in Hasetsu.
"Karupisu...?" He pronounced each symbol out loud, trying to sound out what the words were. Squinting at each bag, he could at least figure out what they were-- or at least what they might taste like-- from the pictures of each food item. The best way to find out, though, would be to taste it and learn firsthand.
Taking the marshmallow offered to him, he bit into it without thinking. He had no idea what to expect, texture or flavor... Then the jam filling burst into his mouth, sweet and tangy; his eyes widened with surprise and he had to stuff the rest in before any fell out. "What the--? It's like mochi, but it says something else on the package." He still couldn't quite make out the characters, but he knew it wasn't that. Besides, mochi looked more like tiny dumplings than marshmallows... "It's good. Really sweet, but good."
He didn't get the chance to eat sweets often, so he wasn't about to pass this up. "It can't be easy to get these here. Have you been saving these?" If they were her favorites, then it was really nice of her to share them with him, especially if she couldn't just get them whenever she wanted.
Emily smiled giving his hand an affectionate squeeze.
“I did,” she affirmed with a confident grin. “What kind of friend would I be if I didn’t look out for you?”
Now that she had openly expressed her view, a light blush covered her cheeks, unsure how he’d respond to her openly declaring that they were friends….surely they constituted as such right? Sure they hung out together but that was only because of her cousin and Viktor.
Regardless, Emily enjoyed Yuri’s company and wanted to grow closer; he was surprisingly nice sometimes and fun to be around. He gave good skating advice when she needed and now was a source of small comfort while they waited out the storm.
Yuri may have scoffed, but he didn't shrink away or try to deny it otherwise. Honestly, he didn't have many people in his life that he was close to; his family and his coaches were obvious, but apart from that? Maybe 1 or 2 people counted among those he could call 'friends'. Though he might have been outwardly disgusted by the idea before, he'd certainly opened his heart more to others after his first senior season... Emily had come to have her own place there, too.
"Right, well..." he shrugged, "It'll be a while before power comes back. Can't even cook, but there might be some snacks your p-- cousin hid away somewhere." Out of respect for her, he refrained from calling the elder Yuuri any insulting nicknames, though the man himself seemed to have gotten used to it. "Other than that, there's got to be something interesting to do. When I was a kid, Grandpa shared stories at times like this..."
He sighed, thinking back to fake campfire nights when they'd put up a blanket fort in the living room, gather around the fireplace and Yuri would be rewarded with some chilling tale or other. He really missed his grandfather, especially now, but some company was better than none. "I'm probably not as good at telling them, but I could."
