Abandoned 100-Year-Old Spanish Church is Transformed into a Skate Park Covered in Geometric Illustrations by Okuda San Miguel

The abandoned Spanish church was transformed into a stunning, unique skate park, which beautifully highlights the juxtaposition between history and modern culture. Originally built in 1912 by the Asturian architect Manuel del Busto, the church is located Santa Barbara in Llanera. With the help of the group called ‘Church Brigade,’ crowdfunding and Red Bull the building was rescued from ruins.

To restore its beauty, every flat surface in the interior was illuminated by a rainbow of colors and geometric illustrations by artist Okuda San Miguel. The public skate park is now called Kaos Temple, which reflects the burst of colors and intricate mural and urban designs. Usually, the church is considered a place of safety, but the cultural paradox of skateboarding which is synonymous with danger adds an ironic beauty to the original purpose of the structure.
