UK Space Port Confirmed
www.ttmclothing.co.uk - space meets streetwear
An exciting new era could be just round the corner for the UK and its space exploits.
On 15th March 2018, The Space Industry Bill was given royal assent, paving the way to construct Britain’s first space port. It comes as part of the Government’s plan to increase the UK’s share of global space industry from 6.5% to 10% by 2030.
The bill will also allow the first commercial space launch on UK soil. This on top of the addition of a space port could create hundreds of new jobs and a new avenue for economic growth previously left unexplored.

2 degrees C
“...over the last 8,000 years, we haven't seen a temperature extreme this rapid and this fast and large.”
As politics continues its ugly battle with global warming we see a variety of skewed and distorted arguments thrown around between parties whose agendas do not align. With these conflicting messages it becomes very difficult for the non-scientist, average-joe amongst us to have an educated opinion.
With the help of the brilliant livescience article (link at bottom) we have given a summary of what changes we would see in a global environment with only a 2 degree C difference in temperature.
While the small figures may seem insignificant to some, please keep in mind that only 5 degrees C separates the globe we know now, to the globe of the last ice age...
Food
A rise of 2 degrees C would almost double the water deficit and lead to a drop in wheat and maize harvests. If temperatures get too hot when plants such as wheat, grain, and corn are flowering, their growth can become stunted, leading to decreased or no edible food crop. A worry as foods such as these are a world-wide staple food. Wheat alone is the second most important food crop and delivers 20% of the nutritional food calories for 4.5 billion people.
The oceans are also key and on average provide people with about 20 percent of their dietary protein. However, ocean acidification caused by climate change makes it extremely difficult for thousands of species, including oysters, crabs and corals, to form their protective shells. This in turn can have great effects on the food webs involving them.
Shelter
As can be seen in the image above, when viewed from space it is clear how important our shorelines are to us as a species. About 40 percent of the world's population lives within 62 miles (100 kilometers) of the coast. This is a worrying statistic as temperatures rise, glaciers melt, and sea-levels rise. From 1993 to 2010, sea levels rose approximately 0.11 inches (3 mm) a year. Whilst not seeming a huge amount, these levels are more than double that of the previous measurements.
Health
Risks of pandemics are often declared the biggest threats to humanity and the issues surrounding global warming can have a direct impact on this. Increases in temperature and changing rain patterns are associated with the spread of vector-borne diseases. Changing weather patterns can help diseases spread to new countries and continents.
These facts highlight that the argument of whether global warming is natural or man-made is not the question of significance. It is not blame we should be looking for, but answers. Whether we like it or not, we as a species have a pro-found effect on this planet. Whether we have or have not caused global warming does not matter. What we can do about it does matter. We must strive to have a positive impact on preventing the possible implications of a planet on the brink of dangerous changes.

Air Breathing Rocket Could Change Space Travel
UK firm, Reaction Engines Ltd, are working on a new design of rocket that does away with extra boosters and could provide a single-stage-to-orbit spacecraft.
The SABRE (Synergistic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine) system could revolutionise the way we get into space. The rocket is designed to scoop up air from the atmosphere during its ascent. This air then acts as an oxidiser allowing the rocket fuel to ignite. This system would prevent the need for carrying an onboard oxygen supply and would solve the problem of having to eject empty containers as rocket fuel is used up. The overall gain is lighter payloads and less waste.
As perfect as it sounds, this system is not without its difficulties. The incoming atmospheric air has to be cooled from 1,000°C to -150°C in just one-hundredth of a second in order for it to be utilised as an oxidiser. However, headway has been made as in 2012 ESA oversaw the testing of a prototype pre-cooling device.
A mock-up of a ground-based test of the SABRE engine
The rocket has received great backing with Reaction Engines Ltd getting $10 million investment from ESA and a hefty £50 million from the UK Space Agency. As well as this construction began on a new test facility at Westcott Venture Park in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
The facility will include a propulsion test stand that can accommodate various test engine configurations, an assembly building, workshops, offices and a control room.
Testing of the SABRE engine is due to commence in 2020, with more testing of the engine’s pre-cooler system expected to take place in 2018.
