ok so the marauders and snape are doing their little arguing thing whatever and snape decides to try his brand new spell which reverts the person back to their first language (it’s like 3rd year he’s not that into dark arts yet) he’s like 90% sure it won’t work but it’s a spur of the moment thing so he just like. does it. so he’s like abracadabra and what not and it goes silent bc they’re waiting for something to happen and it just doesn’t.
and james goes to make fun of him along with remus and peter ofc but the moment sirius joins in a spew of latin falls out and it goes back to that awkward silence thing. bc yea james did learn hindi from euphemia and yea sirius taught remus french and yea peter does know bits and pieces of a bunch of languages but they all learned english first. but sirius is the heir to the noble house of black of fucking course his first language was latin.
so snape explains his spell and shit (yk when the villain tells the hero their big master plan? basically that) sirius gets pissed so he’s just shouting angry latin and everyone’s staring at him confused because who the fuck knows latin?
the only other people who know latin are sirius’ cousins/betrothed (lols i’m so funny) and sirius’ relatives do not like him so the only person willing to translate for him is regulus (only because sirius says he’ll stop bullying kreacher for the entirety of summer break). regulus is like begging snape to put it back but snape is not having that because “regulus, i’m sorry but hell will freeze over before i help sirius black” (if he’s being completely honest he didn’t think the spell would work and he hasn’t really made a counter spell yet) so you just see second year regulus following his brother around translating for him in a tone of voice that does not match what he’s saying for the next 24 hours until the spell wears off
