Mrs.Curtis did NOT play about bedtimes. Darry literally had one till he was 16 and there was NO convincing her in getting rid of it. He has a pretty good sleep schedule now cause of it so now he doesn’t mess around about Pony’s
pony didn’t see darry crying for his parents at their funeral, but he did see darry crying for him.
pony didn’t see darry reach out for his parents at their funeral, but the first thing he does when he sees pony is runs up and hugs him.
pony didn’t see darry crumbling over their parents, but he saw his presumably strict, stoic big brother bawling his eyes out for him. he felt his heart pounding against his cheek, heard it loud and clear. he felt darry squeezing the life out of him, and he squeezed right back.
that was the moment pony realized how much darry loved him. at that moment, he couldn’t differentiate the tears dripping from darry’s cheeks onto his from his own. losing pony for a week broke darry that much..?
darry loves him. darry has and will always love him, unconditionally. and pony will always love darry twice as much
the gang shares like 5 brain cells but Darry always has 1 of them so the rest of the gang has to share the other 4. Two Bit and Dallas only get to use one once a month tho and Steve loses his brain cell privileges after 6pm everyday
darry kinda gets a kick out of acting all stern sometimes just to see what his brothers will do. he usually only does it to ponyboy because soda knows tone better than pony does. like if pony starts pitching an attitude and calls him “darrel” or smth, he just turns around and raises a brow and just goes “‘scuse me, i didn’t hear ya. wanna repeat that?” and then he has to stifle a laugh as pony slinks away like a dog that just got found drinking out of the toilet. or pony’ll give darry a hard time about something and darry’s just like “you wanna say that again to my face this time?” and he can see the wheels turning in pony’s head before he throws his hands up and mumbles something about “forget it”.
very rarely does darry care if his brothers respect him—i mean, he obviously wants them to respect him as a brother, but not really as a guardian. he more so just wants them to respect his time and not waste it because there’s only so many hours in a day, but generally, he doesn’t care. he just likes putting his brothers in their places sometimes. they figure out he’s joking after a while but it’s in the moment.

Feel free to drop a comment and tell me what you thought!
I’ve never written QPR PB+J before, but I wanted to try, since it technically fits the challenge criteria for the prompt! Anyways this is inspired by another QPR PB+J fic. It’s a modern AU cause why not?
also, pony and Johnny are both deaf, and Johnny is a wheelchair user
Ponyboy Curtis is the first Curtis brother to make it into college.
He gets a full ride track scholarship to Oklahoma State University, so Darry and Soda don’t have to worry about paying for his tuition.
“We’re real proud of you, honey.” Soda says.
His brothers both take a few days off of work to drive up to college with Pony.
“We wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Darry says.
As they pull up to the red brick building that is the Parker Residence Hall, where Pony will be living for his freshman year, Pony begins to worry.
What if his roommate is some entitled Soc? What if his roommate hates him? What if his roommate is weirded out by his cochlear implants, or his little soothing motions?
Stims, he thinks. That's what Darry said.
Darry also said not to worry too much about things like this, but Pony can’t help the way his brain works.
All these scenarios are filling his head, and the familiar feeling of anxiety is creeping up his spine.
Pony thinks Darry must be able to read his mind, because he puts a reassuring hand on Pony’s shoulder, grounding him to reality.
“It’s okay, you’ll be okay.” He signs, squeezing Pony’s shoulder.
The brothers begin to unload the old Ford pickup truck, taking out the three boxes that contain virtually all of Ponyboy’s belongings. All his clothes, books, and trinkets fit inside those three boxes.
Pony heads up to his dorm room while his brothers handle the paperwork at the front desk of the dorm building.
The elevator ride up to the dorm is anxiety provoking, to say the least.
By the time he reaches the door to his room, his hands are trembling. He shakily turns the door handle, and steps into the dorm room.
Sitting on the bed closest to the door, a blue wheelchair next to him, is a boy with jet-black hair, caramel-color skin, and dark doe eyes.
His roommate.
The boy is wearing a pair of jeans and a striped shirt. Nothing too fancy.
Pony immediately relaxes. The boy didn't seem like a Soc.
The boy is hunched over a sketchbook, drawing something, his body twitching slightly every so often.
The boy looks up from his sketching, and gives Pony a small, shy smile.
"You must be my roommate. My name's Johnny. Johnny Cade. What's your name?" He signs, while still vocalizing the words.
ASL.
Pony grins widely, "My name’s Ponyboy. Ponyboy Curtis. You know ASL? Are you deaf too?" He signs, his eyes shimmering with excitement as he spots the white cochlear implant on the back of Johnny’s head.
Johnny's smile brightens considerably. He nods, and the twitching subsides. "Yeah, I'm also deaf. I wasn't born deaf though. I lost my hearing when I was seven years old."
Pony nods in acknowledgment. He's been deaf since birth, so he's never known any different. "I was born deaf, but I didn't get my implants until about a year ago."
Johnny looks away for a moment, glancing out the window on the other side of the room, before looking back at Ponyboy.
“Y’know, I was worried that my roommate would be some ableist jerk… You’re a whole lot better than what I was expecting.”
Pony’s expression softens, “I was worried about the same thing, but I think we’ll get along just fine.”
The door to the dorm room swings open, revealing Sodapop, who is holding a box labeled ‘Pony Box 1’, a wide grin on his face. He places the box on the ground to free up his hands so he can sign.
“What’s going on in here? Y’all seem to be the best of friends already!” He speaks his words, as well as signing them for Pony.
Soda turns to face Johnny, grinning widely at him. “I’m Sodapop. I’m one of his brothers.” He says, ruffling Pony’s hair affectionately.
Pony makes a noise of protest, batting Soda’s hand away.
He looks over at Johnny, who has a confused look on his face. Pony realizes his brother’s name isn’t all that easy to lip read, nor is it a common name in the slightest, so he finger-spells it for him.
“S-O-D-A-P-O-P. Like the drink. It’s a pretty original name, but our dad was an original person. That’s also why my name is Ponyboy.” He signs, laughing softly.
Johnny nods in understanding, letting out a quiet laugh and moving to face Sodapop.
“I’m Johnny Cade.” He signs, before turning back to Ponyboy.
“He said he’s one of your brothers, right? You have more than one?” He questions, tilting his head like a puppy, which Pony decides is an accurate way to describe his roommate.
Pony nods, “Yeah. This is Sodapop, he’s eighteen, and my oldest brother, Darry, who is twenty-two, should be here any minute now.”
As if on cue, the door swings open, and Darry enters the room, carrying two more boxes.
“Jesus, Sodapop, you could have come down and gotten another box.” He says, his tone full of mock annoyance as he places the boxes down on the floor.
Soda grins his signature lopsided grin, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “Sorry ‘bout that, Superman… I got distracted meeting Pony’s roommate.”
Darry rolls his eyes at the use of the nickname, playfully messing up Soda’s blond hair in retaliation.
He turns to Ponyboy, his expression softening slightly as he looks at his baby brother, who is now invested in a drawing that Johnny is showing him.
“See, there was nothing to worry about, little buddy. It all worked out.” He signs, ruffling Pony’s hair just as Soda had done moments prior.
Pony rolls his eyes, swatting Darry’s hand away and trying (and failing) to fix his wild, brown locks.
“Yeah, yeah, I get it, you’re always right…”
But deep down, he’s glad.
There’s something special about Johnny Cade.
He’s just not sure what it is, but he can tell that he and Johnny are going to be real close.
No matter how much he hates it, Ponyboy Curtis is the baby of the family.
From the moment he was born, his big brothers were united through the shared goal of keeping Pony safe and happy. Whether it was from scraped knees, paper cuts, or Socs, anything that was a threat to Pony's safety and happiness had to go.
Now, they are older, and Pony wants less and less protection from them.
But that doesn't mean that they are any less willing to give it.
Still, when Ponyboy wakes up screaming from a nightmare in the middle of the night while Sodapop is out with Steve, Darry is left to figure out how to comfort his brother all on his own.
Emotions have always been Soda's domain. He’s the brother that knows exactly what to say when Pony wakes up from a nightmare, or after a particularly rough day. He might not be book smart, but he might as well be a goddamn genius when it comes to people.
Needless to say, Darry isn’t the best when it comes to emotions.
Still, if his baby brother needs him, then who is he to say no to him?
So he hurries towards Pony and Soda’s shared room, following the sound of his brother’s distressed screams.
When he enters the bedroom, the sight that greets him is heartwrenching.
Pony is thrashing around in the bed, face contorted with fear, the covers twisted around him.
It’s a sight that Darry is sure he never wants to see again.
He quickly makes his way over to the bed, gently shaking Pony’s trembling shoulders to wake him from whatever is terrorizing him in his sleep.
“Pony, honey, c’mon, wake up…” He says, a sense of urgency in his voice.
Pony’s eyes fly open and immediately fill with tears. He lets Darry pull him close as he sobs.
“Hey, shhhh, you’re okay… I got you… ” Darry whispers soothingly to him, one hand rubbing circles on his back, and the other carding through his messy brown locks.
Pony’s face is buried in Darry’s chest, and his breaths are more like shuddering gasps.
“You wanna talk about it?” Darry asks softly, fully aware of the vulnerable state that his baby brother is in.
His brother’s small, quiet voice, slightly muffled by Darry’s chest, comes out in a hoarse, stuttering whisper, “I-It was really bad, Dar…”
And well, if that didn’t just make Darry want to keep this kid far, far away from the horrors of the real world.
“Shh… it’s okay honey… you’re safe…you’re safe with me…” He says, holding Pony a little tighter.
Pony’s grip on Darry tightens, and he lifts his head up from Darry’s chest, tears still running down his cheeks.
A warm, soft form cuddles up against Pony.
It’s the stray puppy that Soda had found behind the DX a few weeks ago. The same one that Darry had said “We can watch him until we find him a new home.” about.
Yet it has been over a month since he said that, and they have yet to even start looking for people to take in the puppy, and the number of puppy-related items in the house is growing rapidly.
The puppy is rubbing up against Pony, looking up at him with big black eyes that remind Pony of Johnny.
Pony gives the puppy a watery smile and pets his head gently. His fur is soft beneath Pony’s hand, and slowly, Pony is calming down. His breathing is becoming more regular, and he’s not shaking so much anymore.
The bedroom door creaks open, revealing Soda’s lean frame in the doorway. He’s got a goofy smile on his face. “Y’all are having a sleepover here without me? Man, even Bowie is here.” He asks, his tone teasing as he walks over and pets the puppy.
Darry rolls his eyes playfully, nudging Pony with his shoulder, “Ponykid had a pretty bad nightmare. Woke up screaming, and needed a little comfort from his big brother. Bowie here just decided to join us.”
Soda’s expression softens, and he ruffles Pony’s hair affectionately, “You okay honey? You haven’t had one of those in a while.”
Pony nods, “I’m fine Soda, promise.” He says, fiddling with the hem of his shirt. He’s lying, and his brothers know it.
Soda sighs softly, not out of annoyance, but out of love for his little brother, “You don’t have to lie to us, Pony… We care a whole lot about you, honey. You know that, right? We just want to make sure you’re safe, even if the only danger is that wild imagination of yours.”
Pony can’t help the tears that begin to fall. “I-I know you do… I know.. I just- I don’t wanna cause more trouble for you… Both of y’all already have enough troubles without me adding my own… I can handle a nightmare…I’m not weak..” He says, looking away from his brothers while trying to wipe away the tears that continue to fall.
“I-I’ll stop crying in a minute…”
Soda and Darry exchange a look, before Darry turns Pony’s face towards him. “You can cry, honey. We ain’t gonna call you weak just for crying… crying doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human… and we ain’t ever gonna shame you for being human.”
Pony’s green eyes meet Darry’s blue ones, and for a moment, there’s silence, and then, Pony launches himself into Darry’s arms, breathing in his scent.
Soda’s there in a flash, and suddenly, all three Curtis boys are involved in some sort of Ponyboy Sandwich.
Bowie is licking the tears off of Pony’s face, causing him to giggle softly, a sound that was rare to hear from him these days.
In the safe environment of Pony and Soda’s bedroom, the Curtises are able to be free from their worries and just be themselves.
Those worries will still be there in the morning, but for now, they let themselves forget all of their responsibilities, and just relax.
