Would you still love me if I was a worm? — Herbig-Haro 49/50 (probably … if it could talk)
Of course! When the James Webb Space Telescope peered at HH 49/50 in infrared light, it observed a cool scene: Like all Herbig-Haro objects, a still-forming star known as a protostar is responsible for producing a jet of material. Although the star is offscreen, the effects of its presence are notable in infrared light.
As you begin your journey, you’ll quickly discover there’s more than meets the eye: The spiral galaxy at the peak of the “worm” is significantly farther away and not a part of HH 49/50.
Drifting closer, you’ll notice the layer-like texture of the outflow of material. Similar to how a speeding boat creates a wake behind it, the arcs of orange material are formed by the protostar’s activity. Webb’s infrared view highlights the presence of glowing hydrogen and carbon monoxide molecules as well as energized dust grains within the jet.
Herbig-Haro 49/50 is located 625 light-years away in the constellation Chamaeleon.
