“I told Dad I’m staying the night at John B’s. I don’t know what you’re gonna tell him.”
You scoffed, looking up from your bed. “Seriously? You’re not gonna help me?”
Your dad had never been a fan of you hanging around John B or JJ. He only tolerated it because Pope and Kiara were usually there too.
But spending the night?
There was no chance he’d agree to that.
“Just tell him you’re staying at Kiara’s,” Pope said with a shrug.
You let out a dramatic sigh, grabbed your purse, and followed him into the living room. Your parents were standing in the kitchen when the two of you walked in.
“I’m staying the night at John B’s,” Pope announced.
“And I’m staying at Kiara’s!” you added a little too quickly.
The two of you had barely reached the front door before your dad stopped you.
“Whoa, whoa. Hold on a second.”
You muttered a curse under your breath as you and Pope turned around.
“So let me get this straight.” He rested his hands on his hips. “Pope’s staying at John B’s, you’re staying at Kiara’s… yet all of you guys are best friends.” He raised an eyebrow. “Forgive me if I think you’re all ending up at the same place.”
You shot Pope a desperate look for backup.
He only shrugged.
You forced a smile. “We’re not, Dad. Kiara isn’t feeling well, and I told her I’d stay with her tonight. I’m just trying to be a good friend.”
Your dad stared at you for a long moment, clearly unconvinced.
“You must think I was born yesterday.”
You pressed your lips together, trying not to look guilty.
Finally, he waved a hand toward the door.
“Go on… before I change my mind.”
“Thanks, Dad!” you blurted out, a little too enthusiastically, before practically dragging Pope out the front door.
The second you climbed into the truck, you let out a long sigh.
“Thanks for all the help, dork.” You shot him a playful glare.
Pope laughed.
“You know he wasn’t gonna listen to me no matter what I said. Besides…” He started the engine. “He already knew you weren’t going to Kiara’s.”
You slumped back in your seat.
“Yeah… you’re probably right.”
As Pope pulled away from the curb, your stomach growled.
“Can we stop and grab a pizza first?” you asked. “You know John B’s fridge is basically empty.”
Pope chuckled.
“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.”
He turned onto the main road, heading toward the nearest pizza place before making the drive to the Château.
You and Pope arrived at John B’s house a few minutes later.
The pizza hadn’t even made it onto the coffee table before JJ snatched a slice straight out of the box you were holding.
“Man, I’ve been starving,” he mumbled before taking a huge bite.
The rest of the evening was spent playing cards, laughing, and drinking a few beers.
Well… mostly you, Kiara, JJ, and John B.
Pope wasn’t much of a drinker, and he definitely wasn’t into smoking.
As the night wore on, everyone eventually settled down.
You and Kiara crashed on the pullout couch in the living room while the guys disappeared into their own corners of the house.
Sometime later, you stirred awake.
The house was quiet.
Rubbing the sleep from your eyes, you got up to use the bathroom. As you walked past John B’s room, you noticed a faint light spilling through the cracked door.
Curious, you peeked inside.
JJ was sitting on the edge of the bed, rolling a joint.
You knocked lightly on the door before pushing it open.
“Hey… can’t sleep?”
He looked over his shoulder and flashed you a lazy grin.
“Nope.” He nodded toward the living room. “What about you? Kiara kicking you in her sleep?”
You laughed softly.
“No. I just randomly woke up.”
He finished rolling the joint, running his tongue across the paper to seal it.
“This little beauty right here should knock me out,” he said with a chuckle.
You eased the door mostly shut behind you and walked over, sitting beside him on the bed.
“Can I try?”
JJ raised an eyebrow.
“Try… this?” He held up the joint.
You nodded.
“Yeah.”
You’d never smoked before.
You’d had a few beers here and there, but weed was something you’d never tried. You and Pope had always been the responsible ones of the group in a way.
Still, You were curious.
JJ studied your face for a second.
“What does Pope think about this?”
You rolled your eyes.
“Pope isn’t my older brother, JJ. We’re the same age, and I can make my own decisions.”
A grin spread across his face.
“Damn. My good girl’s gone bad, huh?”
You laughed.
“It’s just weed. I already drink beer every now and then, so… why not?”
JJ shrugged.
“Alright then.”
He grabbed the lighter from the nightstand and lit the end of the joint.
Taking the first hit himself, he exhaled a stream of smoke toward the ceiling before holding it out to you.
“Take it slow,” he said. “Just a little.”
You nodded and brought it to your lips.
The second you inhaled, you took way too much.
You immediately doubled over, coughing into your arm.
JJ laughed, gently patting your back.
“Easy,” he said. “I told you to take it slow.”
Once you’d caught your breath, you tried again.
This time, you inhaled slowly before blowing the smoke back out.
His hand lingered against your back.
“Better?”
You nodded.
“Yeah… It doesn’t really taste like anything, and the smell burns my nose.” You say, handing him back the joint.
JJ chuckled, finally pulling his hand away from your back as he took the joint and took another hit before passing it back.
“You get used to it.”
You took another puff.
Then another.
The two of you passed the joint back and forth until there was barely anything left.
JJ pinched out the last ember and set it aside before turning to look at you.
“So…” he asked with a smirk. “How’re you feeling?”
You shrugged.
Everything felt lighter somehow.
Not bad.
Just different.
“I feel…” You tilted your head, trying to find the right word. “…fine?”
He laughed quietly.
“It takes a few minutes to kick in.”
JJ pushed himself to his feet.
“Gotta take a leak. I’ll be right back.”
Your brows furrowed as JJ’s voice suddenly dropped.
Like way too deep.
You turned to watch him leave the room, but the second you moved, everything lagged behind. The room seemed to tilt, your vision struggling to catch up with your head.
“What the fuck…”
You held your hand up in front of your face, wiggling your fingers.
You watched them move but you didn’t actually feel them until a second later.
It was trippy.
JJ came back into the room just in time to see you staring at your own hands like they were aliens.
He chuckled, dropping back onto the bed beside you.
“It’s kicking in, isn’t it?” he asked with a grin.
Your eyes widened as you slowly looked over at him.
“This feels so weird!”
You practically shouted it.
JJ immediately smiled and held a finger to his lips.
“Shhh. You’re gonna wake everybody up.”
You slapped a hand over your mouth, giggling uncontrollably before lowering it again.
“I can’t even feel my own hands.”
JJ laughed, shaking his head.
“You’re so high.”
“I’m not high,” you insisted between giggles. “I think I’m just… really, really happy.”
He smiled.
“Uh-huh. I wonder what could’ve possibly made you so giddy.”
As he spoke, he brushed a few curls away from your forehead before resting the back of his hand against your skin.
“You’re feeling a little warm…”
You gently pushed his hand away.
“That reminds me!” You snapped your fingers. “I have to tell Pope something!”
The second you stood up, JJ grabbed your wrist and carefully pulled you back onto the bed.
“Nope.” He shook his head.
“But—”
“No. You are high out of your mind right now.” He laughed. “Pope’s gonna kill me.”
You looked around the room, pouting dramatically.
“Well… can we do something? I wanna go outside and run.”
JJ rubbed a hand over his face.
“No. You’re gonna wake everyone up.”
“I’ll be quiet!” you whispered loudly. “Come on!”
You stood anyway.
JJ sighed, following after you before gently grabbing your arm.
“No, wait—”
“Oh, don’t be a buzzkill!” you laughed. “You get it?”
JJ raised an eyebrow.
“…What?”
“‘Cause I’m, like…” You pointed at yourself. “Buzzed. And you’re trying to kill my buzz.”
You burst into another fit of laughter.
JJ couldn’t help smiling.
“Baby… you’re way more than buzzed.”
“I can’t breathe in here,” you whined. “Please… I need some air.”
He studied your face for another second before sighing.
“…Alright.”
Your face lit up.
“But you have to be quiet.”
You nodded enthusiastically. “Okay! Shhh!”
You even shushed yourself.
JJ laughed under his breath.
The two of you quietly slipped out of the bedroom.
Kiara was still asleep on the couch.
You almost tripped over a shoe by the front door, but JJ caught your arm before you could fall.
You giggled so loudly he quickly covered your mouth with his hand.
“Shhh…” he whispered, smiling.
Once you stepped outside, you immediately ran into the yard and spun in circles beneath the stars.
JJ sighed as he watched you.
“You’re a fucking mess right now.”
“Let’s dance!” you called.
“To what music?” He asked.
You shrugged.
“You’ll just have to sing for us.”
He blinked.
“…Seriously?”
“Pretend we’re at some fancy Kook party.” You twirled dramatically. “I’m wearing this huge pink ball gown.”
JJ grinned, immediately playing along.
“And I’m wearing a black tux.”
He straightened an imaginary tie.
“Custom-made. Cost me, like… a thousand bucks.”
You laughed.
“Well, I have to say… you look absolutely dashing.” You gave him a dramatic curtsy.
“And you, m’lady…” JJ took your hand and gently kissed the back of it.
“…look absolutely ravishing.”
You giggled.
“How charming you are. I didn’t know you had this side of you.”
“Really?” he teased. “I’m always charming. This shouldn’t surprise you.”
You snorted before wrapping your arms around his neck and stepping closer.
JJ froze.
His grin disappeared for just a second.
His lips parted slightly.
Almost nervously, he rested his hands on your waist lightly.
“O-Okay…” he laughed awkwardly. “I guess we’re really doing this.”
He glanced around the empty yard.
“We’re slow dancing… to absolutely nothing.”
You smiled up at him.
“Come on. Learn how to improvise. Sing.”
JJ sighed dramatically before clearing his throat.
After thinking for a moment, he started singing an old ’80s love song.
Except he deliberately sang it in an outrageously high falsetto.
You burst into laughter.
“Oh my God!”
He exaggerated every note, swaying the two of you back and forth across the grass.
“You are going to wake everyone up now!”
“You said I had to improvise.”
“I know!” you laughed. “That was my fault.”
You shook your head.
“Next time I’ll bring my speaker so we can have actual music.”
JJ smiled.
“There’ll be a next time?”
You bit your lip, your cheeks warming “Well… yeah.”
You shrugged. “This one was kind of a disaster, so we’re gonna have to try again.”
He smiled wider.
The two of you continued swaying together.
At some point, his hands had settled more comfortably against your waist.
“Yeah…” he murmured. “We do.”
His eyes drifted down to your lips for the briefest moment before meeting your gaze again.
You smiled softly.
“Thank you.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“For what?”
You shrugged. “I don’t know…”
Your voice grew quieter.
“For being… you.”
You looked at him for a long moment.
“I don’t think life would be this fun without you.”
JJ looked away with a sheepish smile.
“That’s just the high talking.”
You slowly shook your head.
“No… I mean it.”
He looked back at you.
The smile on his face softened.
“Yeah…”
He laughed quietly.
“My life wouldn’t even be worth living without you.”
Your smile faltered.
JJ’s eyes widened.
He cleared his throat.
“I mean—”
He laughed awkwardly.
“Without… everybody.”
“Pope. John B. Kie… Obviously.”
You smiled knowingly.
“Yeah.”
You reached up, gently running your fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck.
JJ closed his eyes for a second, quietly breathing in.
When he opened them again neither of you said anything.
You just stared at each other, before suddenly bursting into laughter.
The moment was broken by the sound of footsteps on the porch.
You both turned.
Pope stepped outside, squinting into the darkness.
JJ’s hands immediately slipped off your waist.
You quickly let go of his neck.
“What are you two doing out here?” Pope asked. “It’s like two in the morning.”
You were still laughing.
JJ couldn’t stop smiling as he looked over at you.
Pope frowned.
“What’s so funny?”
You hurried over to him.
“Ohh… nothing!” You snorted.
Pope narrowed his eyes, studying your face.
Then he looked closer.
Your eyes.
Your expression.
His head slowly turned toward JJ.
JJ scratched the back of his neck.
Pope pointed at him.
“Did you get my sister high?”
JJ winced.
“…Maybe.”
