The Three Sisters
The Three Sisters – The Barrow, The Nore and The Suir three mythical rivers on our doorstep. Lots of legends and history attached to all three and fantastic cycling route alongside all three. I only read recently in John Keane’s ‘Hidden Kilkenny’ of the Thatched Villages of South Kilkenny and cycling through them yesterday was like a journey back in time. Easy imagine an era when all houses were…

The Kilkenny Newgrange
I was fortunate last weekend to finally cycle across beautiful South Kilkenny and in particular to ‘find’ Knockroe Passage Grave. A place older than Newgrange and Knowth it’s a mysterious site that is older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids. When you first see it it looks just like a mound of stones but closer examination reveals it’s true significance.
It is a link with pagan times which is still…

Slea Head Loop
The beauty of the Dingle peninsula is best experienced on foot or by bicycle; it’s largely missed by those coach loads of tourists and hire cars that now snake around the winding roads of West Kerry. In fact the roads have become so choked with traffic at various times that maybe vehicular access should be curtailed!
And as that is hardly likely I’d recommend cyclists travelling counter…

Illauntannig
There is something about West Kerry that strikes a chord deep inside all who visit. You can feel it in the air, see it in the landscape and in the ancient reminders dotted across the peninsula. It’s a window into the past and possibly a pointer to the future. Folklore and history are interwoven and people still tell the stories of centuries old traditions and history as though they were first…

When the shadows are long Without doubt the most comfortable time for cycling or walking on the Camino in the summer months is early morning when shadows are long.
Cycle woes on the Camino After guiding them for almost 800 kms and reaching the outskirts of Santiago de Compostella, my three amigos abandoned me when my wheel rim suffered excess wearing and split in two!
Camino Trail Magic The route across Spain crosses through so many different terrains; starting by crossing the high Pyrenees and winding slowly westward through magnificent cities, ancient villages, vineyards, cornfields, the meseta and into Celtic Galicia. Each day is different and always surprising. Here is a short clip of the route in Galicia.
Arrival in Praza do Obradoro, Santiago de Compostella One of the most emotional moments for pilgrims on El Camino de Santiago is to arrive in front of the great Cathedral in Praza do Obradoro.
Carlow Cycle Routes
For a small county Carlow offers fantastic variety of cycling routes. There is a terrific network of traffic free local roads, off road routes, flat and hilly routes – all of which can be combined in a single day out.
Here’s a video of some cycling along the Barrow Track and in the Blackstairs.
I will be mapping a lot of local routes over the summer; anyone interested should get in touch!
