Winter time in Cinque Terre.

You may recognise Cinque Terre from photos of Italy with its distinctive colourful houses stacked above each other, built skilfully into the steep cliffs of the Italian Riviera. The five villages are part of a UNESCO world heritage site, protected for their terraced landscapes and traditional ways. Riomaggiore and Vernazza each have a small marina and rely heavily on fishing, while Corniglia and Manarola produce the region’s finest wine; Monteresso is known for its beaches and lemons, but Manarola is usually seen as the face of Cinque Terre. Each one has something slightly unique about it, amongst the charm of the villages’ narrow cobbled streets.

Due to being one of the most beautiful places in all of Italy, the villages are sadly overrun by tourists in the summer. But in the winter the lilting singsong of Italian fills the streets, parking’s a plentiful and there’s no crowds or queues. The villagers’ lives return to normal and you can enjoy a quiet stroll around the harbours and small shops selling local goods. The wind might whip you in the face but the coffee’s as hot as the ciabatta is fresh.
