Week 13: Future of the Internet

It’s not difficult to imagine the future of the internet. I’ve even mentioned in an earlier blog post about the future of the digital classroom, where students will learn completely from digital devices and even holograms. After all, many of these concepts are already present in most science fiction movies. Although it wasn’t critically acclaimed, the movie Transcendence displayed how Johnny Depp was able to create a sentient computer of artificial intelligence, or a technological singularity, and eventually even manages to control other people using his nanotechnology.

Sure, technology like that will create a less cluttered and more streamlined online world, but I feel it will also open doors to far more dangerous possibilities. After all, there are plenty of people who would argue that privacy isn’t a problem posed by future technology, but one which is already here. After the recent revelations that Samsung’s range of new smart TVs may be recording users’ private conversations and sharing the details with third parties, the fear that our home appliances may be spying on us is becoming less sci-fi paranoia and more a real concern.

Additionally, it’ll cause a permanent connection to the workplace. If workaholics are already that attached to their work at home, imagine how much worse they’ll be with total and uninhibited access to their work! We’ve also already seen machines take over the world in Avengers: Age of Ultron, although that frankly was rather fun to watch, wasn’t it?

Regardless, I still can’t wait for a faster and more seamless internet. I think anything good comes with a couple of risks, and those are risks I’m willing to make.
