Anyway it's pride so
I'm nonbinary and my partner is trans (in a much more visible way than I am). I just got laid off, and unemployment is a fucking joke. I'm trying to get certifications to prove I can do what I've been doing for the last 10 years, but they all cost money, and we live in the most expensive place in the US and don't have a good way to get out (also leaving would almost certainly mean going to a place far less safe for us).

My partner and I are both getting several surgeries soon, which will be both gender affirming and medically life-changing in nature. Hospitals cant feed us because we have some extremely high maintenance allergies, so on top of normal recovery cost, we need to get enough microwavable/pre-packaged food to last several weeks of hospital stays.

So I’m going to the Maritime Museum next week. And here’s the thing.
I like The Terror (2018). I like (parts of) the book! I love the fandom and fics and fanart etc etc. and appreciate them as what they are: fiction loosely inspired by history.
But I also care about the actual history. And the actual people.
The men of the Franklin Expedition were real. They were real, complex people who lived and loved in so many different ways before the awful end. Some of them died younger than I am now. A few of them were the same age as my brother is.
The remains of the vast, vast majority of the men of Erebus and Terror are still somewhere out there, scattered and bleached and slowly, slowly decaying into the earth. Only a half-dozen of them have been identified. They died far from home, in a land they thought they could conquer and profit from, and they were scared. They tried so hard to get home, and as far as we know they only made it a fifth of the way to their destination. We will never know the details of their experiences. I think about that a lot— about how much we’ll simply never know.
Meanwhile, their friends and families were trying so hard to bring them home. They wanted to find them so, so badly. Most of them never got any sort of answer as to what happened to the men they loved. Never got any closure. I don’t really have any solid beliefs about what comes after death, but I hope that somewhere, somehow, they got their answers.

There’s something so bittersweet about it finally being discovered that the person who died carrying the Peglar Papers was, in fact, Peglar. The only Terror positively identified as of now.
What an incredible time we live in, that men who died over 160 years ago can finally be identified and laid to rest.

We see that he did!!), but because he was always the guy to offer to take pictures, and therefore was never in group pictures himself
